BRETON Jules

Born in Courriéres, a small village in the agriculturally rich Artois region of northern France, Breton never lost his ties to the peasantry and land of his childhood, drawing lasting inspiration from rural customs and traditions throughout his long career. His formal training in art began in Belgium and was completed in Paris. Breton's smooth academic style of painting, coupled with his vision of contented workers, appealed greatly to the establishment of the Empire and the Second Republic, and he received a succession of awards and honors. The Vintage at Château Lagrange is not entirely typical for Breton, as it depicts a festival in the Médoc district. Breton had expressed a desire to travel to southern France in search of "sublime landscapes with inhabitants embodying extraordinary beauty." The opportunity came when Count Duchdtel invited Breton to paint a companion piece to his Weeders , already in the Count's collection (and now also in Joslyn's). Because of adverse weather, Breton made two trips to the region and completed the work in his studio in Paris. Although he commissioned photographs of the peasants and watched them closely at work, the figures in the finished painting have a distinctly classical quality to them and express stately nobility rather than labored activity.

Jules Breton (1827-1906), known as one of the first “peasant painters,” created beautiful scenes of rural French life and was a highly popular figure among the Salon artists of his era. However, Breton’s work became eclipsed by the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century, and he was eventually forgotten. This well-documented book now pays Breton the tribute that he deserves. It traces the development of his career and the forces that influenced him from his childhood through his early training in Belgium and Paris to his years in Brittany. The book presents and discusses a number of important paintings by Breton, some of which have been almost unknown until now, and it shows how they reflect the artist’s social and humanitarian concerns as well as his painterly abilities. Annette Bourrut Lacouture is an art historian and specialist on Jules Breton and nineteenth-century French art.

Jules Breton
Biography by the ARC staff
Jules Breton was from a rural region in the north western part of France. He was born (May 1, 1827) and spent his youth in Courrières, a small village in the Pas-de-Calais; he died in Paris on July 5, 1906. His father, Marie-Louis Breton worked for a wealthy landowner whose land he supervised. After the death of his mother, when Jules was 4, he was brought up by his father. Others in the family, who lived in the same house, and had a deep influence on the young artist's upbringing, were his maternal grandmother and especially his uncle Boniface Breton. All instilled in the young man a respect for tradition, a love of the land and, especially, for his native region, which remained central to his art throughout his whole life providing the artist with many scenes for his Salon compositions.
He received his first artistic training not far from Courrières at the College St. Bertin near St. Omer. Later (1842) he met the painter Félix de Vigne (1806-1862) who was impressed by his youthful talent and persuaded his family to let him study art. In 1843, Breton left for Ghent (Belgium) where he continued to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts with de Vigne, and an other teacher from the school, the painter Hendrik Van der Haert (1790-1846). Sometime later (1846), Breton moved to Antwerp where he took lessons with Baron Gustaf Wappers; he also spent much of his time copying the works of Flemish masters. Trained as an academic artist, Breton was well aware of other artistic tendencies such as the role of genre painting. In 1847, Breton finally left for Paris where he hoped to perfect his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.

Photographs courtesy Musée des Beaux-Arts, Arras The idea for the current display and joint operation between the museums of Arras and Quimper originated in 1990, but its realization has taken a long time and, in the meantime, the museum of Dublin joined as a third partner. All three museums possess significant works by Breton. brought this artist to the attention of the American public. This current major retrospective, whose name is based on a comment by Vincent Van Gogh ("Breton c'est la chanson des blés"), covers every aspect of Breton's work and contains 118 works dated between 1847 and 1904; virtually all of Breton's most important paintings are present. Many of the loaned works are from the United States, where his imagery has been warmly received, so it is most unfortunate that this exhibition is not being staged by any museums there. Loans also from French museums and other large Western European collections as well as a considerable number of pieces from private collectors. Un grand pardon breton The exhibition begins with some pieces from Breton's younger days: his training, from 1843, first at the Academy in Ghent under the charge of his mentor, Félix De Vigne (whose daughter Elodie he was to marry in 1858), and, after a short interval in Antwerp, in Paris. Breton experienced the revolution of 1848 at close quarters, and because of family financial difficulties after the death of his father that year, he was forced to Courrières to live with his family. In 1853 he painted his first rural country scenes, which were of his native region. In so doing, he "gave the simple peasants a place previously reserved for the gods and the powerful";
