Francis Sayre, a Professor at Harvard Law School and son-in-law of Pres. Wilson, was commissioned to effect the appointment. Commendation and support for Brett was provided by C.F. Weed, a Vice President at the First National Bank of Boston and leader for a local unemployment relief fundraising campaign, and by Stuart J. Fuller, a U.S. State Department consular official for the Far East. Phya Subarn Sompati, Minister of the Siamese Legation to the U.S., officially welcomed Brett to his new position, and later initiated his conferral honor. Letters from W. Taylor, a British subject and close associate of Brett while at the Bank of Siam, provide some insight into the situations in Europe and Siam prior to World War II. He was an associate in the mid 1850s of Millais and Holman Hunt, both of whom were influential upon his artistic development. He was also a friend of D G Rossetti and his work was initially praised by Ruskin, the great Victorian art critic. After his relationship with Ruskin cooled, he devoted his later career to painting the sea. Brett was a keen sailor and often sketched the Welsh shoreline from his yacht, the Viking. He and his family enjoyed many happy holidays in Wales and the exhibition emphasises his devotion to family life and his passion for the sea and boating. Detailed sweeping views of such well-known beauty spots as the Menai Strait, Penmaenmawr, Whitesand Bay, Dinas Bay and Caldey Island and Fishguard, the area Brett loved best, where he and his wife purchased a farmhouse and land. He described it as ‘in short the only really satisfactory seaside place on the whole British coast’. One of Brett’s finest Welsh seacapes Britannia’s Realm, which was a sensation at the Royal Academy in l880 will be on loan from the Tate Gallery along with other large seascapes including, The Earth’s Shadow on the Sky (Procession of craft up to Bristol in a fog) from Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery and the dramatic The Isles of Skomer and Skokham from Aberdeen Art Gallery. In addition there will be Brett’s original sketchbooks, borrowed from the National Maritime Museum, views of the Menai Strait, Giltar Point and Caldey. Many of his oil sketches will be on display for the first time along with a number of his photographs of his wife, children and the crew of the Viking.

Ladd Everitt Best metal concert I've ever been to: I've seen so many great shows, it's hard to say. Some that stand out are Savatage in the Hall of the Mountain King years, Sanctuary on the Into the Mirror Black tour, Manowar on the Fighting the World tour, Vicious Rumors on the Welcome to the Ball tour, King's X at Roseland for Faith, Hope, Love and their self-titled, and my first times seeing Trouble, Nevermore, Opeth and In Flames live on stage. I'll also never forget seeing Metallica walk out onto a dark, smoky stage of tombstone crosses on the MASTER OF PUPPETS tour warming up for Ozzy. I was terrified! Best metal concert I've never been to: Two shows from the late Eighties still stick in my mind. The first was the "Hell on Wheels" tour with Armored Saint, Helloween and Grim Reaper. Can't believe I missed that one. And then there was Stryper and Loudness at Madison Square Garden. The city still seemed real big to me at the time. A few of my favorite bands: Opeth, Spiral Architect, Nevermore, Evergrey, At the Gates/The Haunted, Carcass/Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil and a zillion others.

If fortune is smiling the fiction and non-fiction will have been separated, and the fiction shelved in alphabetical order. Somewhere down at floor level, on the far right-hand side, more often than not you will find a large run of squat, thick hardcovers bound in varying shades of a dark blue. Dustjackets are rarer than hens’ teeth. Worn gold lettering will usually proclaim that these novels were published by Heinemann. They may be part of something called the Severn Edition. Their author was someone called Francis Brett Young. Birmingham is not usually thought of as a place of visions. The city, and the surrounding area of the modern West Midlands known as the Black Country, is even today usually thought of as consisting only of dirty, industrial wasteland. Any vision or imagination is crushed by the relentless commercialism and urban sprawl of Birmingham. Although this is still very much a current stereotypical view, often held by the people who have never visited the region, there was more truth to it during the first half of the twentieth century. Francis Brett Young consistently celebrated the industrial Black Country and city of Birmingham in his novels. He also ranged widely through nearby rural areas of Worcestershire, Staffordshire, and the Welsh Marches. Part of that area often known as the ‘Heart of England’ became his personal territory in a whole series of novels published over forty years. His own unique and enduring vision of the beauty and squalor – and the sublime quality of the region – filled their pages, worked out through the lives of a gallery of vivid characters, ranging from the merely sentimental to the truly monstrous.
