Pieter Bruegel the Elder Pieter Bruegel (1525-69), usually known as Pieter Bruegel the Elder to distinguish him from his elder son, was the first in a family of Flemish painters. He is generally considered the greatest Flemish painter of the 16th century, and was the foremost member of a European movement that used the Tower of Babel regularly in their work. He spelled his name Brueghel until 1559, and his sons retained the "h" in the spelling of their names. He was probably born in Breda in the Duchy of Brabant, now in The Netherlands. Accepted as a master in the Antwerp painters' guild in 1551, he was apprenticed to Coecke van Aelst, a leading Antwerp artist, sculptor, architect, and designer of tapestry and stained glass. Bruegel traveled to Italy in 1551 or 1552, completing a number of paintings, mostly landscapes, there.
Returning home in 1553, he settled in Antwerp but ten years later moved permanently to Brussels. He married van Aelst's daughter Mayken, in 1563, the same year that he painted two depictions of Babel: The 'Little' Tower of Babel (top) and the Tower of Babel (right). Bruegel had visited Rome and based his Tower of Babel on the Colosseum. He painted the tower as an immense structure occupying almost the entire picture space, with tiny figures rendered in perfect detail, going about their daily business. The top floors of the tower are bright red, whereas the rest of the brickwork has already started to weather.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from
Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Flemish artist active in Antwerp and Brussels, famous for his paintings and drawings of landscapes and scenes of robust peasant life, and founder of a dynasty of artists that remained active well into the 17th century. Bruegel's earliest works were landscapes, an interest he retained throughout his life. A number of panoramic landscape drawings made on his Italian trip—for example, those preserved in Berlin (1552, Staatliche Museen) and in London (1553, British Museum)—show Bruegel's ability, even in his early career, to depict the changing seasonal moods and the atmospheric qualities of nature. These same characteristics appear in his later landscape paintings, such as Hunters in the Snow (1565, Art History Museum, Vienna) and Magpie on the Gallows (1568, Hessiches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt, Germany). Modern scholars are far from interpreting Bruegel's art as simple, whimsical folk subjects painted by an artist from mere peasant stock, as painter and art historian Karel van Mander described him in 1604. Recent writers see him as a knowledgeable man who was known to be a friend of such intellectuals as geographer Abraham Ortelius. Bruegel's pictures have been variously interpreted as referring to the beliefs of different religious thinkers, to the conflicts between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, to the political domination of the Lowlands by the Spanish, and as visual equivalents to dramatic allegories performed publicly by Flemish societies of rhetoric.

3. Pieter Bruegel The Elder
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (15251569). Pieter Bruegel the Elder, generallyconsidered the greatest Flemish painter of the 16 th century
http://my.tele2.ee/brith/bio.html
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569) Pieter Bruegel the Elder, generally considered the greatest Flemish painter of the 16 th century was born sometime between 1525 and 1530, most likely in Breda in the Duchy of Brabant, now in the Netherlands. Until 1559 he spelt his name “Brueghel”, then changed it to “Bruegel” . The reason for this is unknown (his sons retained the “h” in the spelling of their names). According to the painter-historian Carel Van Mander, whose Schilderboek is the main source of our knowledge about Bruegel’s life, the young artist was apprenticed to Pieter Coeck van Aelst. Van Aelst was a successful Antwerp artist, sculptor, architect and designer of tapestry and stained glass. In 1551 Bruegel had completed his training and become a Master of the Painters Guild of Saint-Luke in Antwerp. For the greater part of the following three years he appears to have travelled abroad. In 1552 he was in the south of Italy, visiting Reggio, Messina, Palermo and Naples. In 1553 he was in Rome where he painted a picture in collaboration with Giulio Clovio (later a friend of El Greco). Clovio was a well-known painter and miniaturist of the day. During this journey he also made an extensive series of drawings of the Alps, indicating that he already had an interest in landscape. Bruegel returned to Antwerp sometimes in 1554 where in 1555 he began to work for the Antwerp engraver and print seller Hieronymus Cock. His Alpine drawings formed the basis for a number of elaborate landscapes, although they were actually engraved by other artists. Cock’s and Bruegel’s close association and friendship continued until Bruegel’s death.

Edited by Nadine M. Orenstein
Cloth ISBN 0-300-09014-5
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30–1569) was a remarkable draftsman and designer of prints as well as a great painter. His independent drawings and designs for engravings and etchings, which were carried out by the leading printmakers of his day, have fascinated scholars and the general public alike since they were created. They have recently been the subject of research that has given rise to a reevaluation of the parameters of Bruegel’s oeuvre. The new scholarship has been brought to bear on the texts in the present volume. An international group of experts presents essays on the artist’s life, his contributions as a draftsman and as a printmaker, his iconography and social and political context, and the posthumous survival of his art. The authors also illuminate Bruegel’s genius in discussions of individual prints and drawings. Each of these works is illustrated and many comparative illustrations are also included. This book is the catalogue for a major exhibition of more than 140 prints and drawings by Bruegel and his imitators to be shown at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, from May to August 2001 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from September to December 2001.

See also: Renaissance Art VIEW IMAGE LIST "The greatest of the Flemish sixteenth-century masters of genre was Pieter Bruegel the Elder. We know little of his life except that he had been to Italy, like so many northern artists of his time, and that he lived and worked in Antwerp and Brussels, where he painted most of his pictures in the 1560s, the decade in which the stern Duke of Alva arrived in the Netherlands. The dignity of art and of artists was probably as important to him as it was to Dürer or Cellini, for in one of his splendid drawings he is clearly out to point a contrast between the proud painter and the stupid-looking bespectacled man who fumbles in his purse as he peers over the artist's shoulder. "One of the most perfect of Bruegel's human comedies is his famous picture of a country wedding Tintoretto himself could not have produced a more convincing picture of a crowded space than did Bruegel with his device of the table receding into the background and the movement of people starting with the crowd at the barn door, leading up to the foreground and the scene of the food carriers, and back again through the gesture of the man serving the table who leads our eyes directly to the small but central figure of the grinning bride. In these gay, but by no means simple, pictures, Bruegel had discovered a new kingdom for art which the generations of Netherlandish painters after him were to explore to the full."

He developed an original style that uniformly holds narrative, or story-telling, meaning. In subject matter he ranged widely, from conventional Biblical scenes and parables of Christ to such mythological portrayals as Landscape with the Fall of Icarus ; religious allegories in the style of Hieronymus Bosch ; and social satires. But it was in nature that he found his greatest inspiration. His mountain landscapes have few parallels in European art. Popular in his own day, his works have remained consistently popular. Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Pieter Bruegel the Elder, nicknamed ‘Peasant Bruegel’ was probably the most significant and exciting painter in the Northern Europe during the middle part of the sixteenth century. His nickname “Peasant Bruegel” indicates to his subjects: peasant life, proverbs and genre scenes, the New Testament topics set among common folks of contemporary Flanders.
The date and place of Bruegel’s birth are uncertain, most of the scholars consider he was born near Breda in the period between 1525- 1530. Until 1559 he spelt his name ‘Brueghel’, then as ‘Bruegel’, the reason for this change is unknown and his sons retained ‘h’ in their names.
Very probably the young Bruegel was apprenticed to Pieter Coeck van Aelst (1502–1550), a leading Antwerp artist, sculptor, architect, and designer of tapestry and stained glass, whose daughter Bruegel would later marry. In 1551 Bruegel became a Master of the Antwerp Guild. In 1552, 1553 and possibly for part of 1554 he traveled abroad. In 1552 he was in the south of Italy, visiting Reggio Calabria, Messina, Palermo and Naples, and in the following year he was in Rome, where he came into contact with a well-known painter and miniaturist of the time, Giulio Clovio, who created a small-scale picture of the Tower of Babel on ivory, and a View of Lyons (France). Both works are now lost. On his return journey to the Netherlands, Bruegel evidently spent some time in Switzerland, where he made many drawings of the Alps.
