Brueghel Entreprises (or The Art of Painting from Father to Son). This brings various copies by Pieter Bruhegel the Younger of paintings by his father, together with the originals (several for the first time). This promises to be a very interesting exhibition. 22 March to 21 June 2002. Bruegel was a 16th century Flemish artist, famous for his paintings of peasant life. Most noted for his distinctive "anti-renaissance" style, with its realism (in both subject/content and execution), wit, and attention to detail. The "Peasant Wedding" (1568? - oil on wood) is one of my favourites - not just because of its obvious vitality and humour, but also for the overall composition and the colours (which, admittedly, are largely a result of the materials available at the time, and the age of the painting). Unfortunately, this painting does not hang at the Belgian

CHILDREN'S GAMES
by Pieter Bruegel, the Elder
Pieter Bruegel ( PE ter BROY gul) was born in Belgium, which is now a part of the Netherlands. (Sometimes his name is spelled Brueghel .) In 1551 he became an apprentice of an artist, Aelst. He traveled to Italy about that time and painted many pictures, mostly landscapes. He was about 26 years old at the time. He married the daughter of his master.
His paintings were very popular in his time, and are still popular today, over 400 years later.
In the painting "Children's Games", he shows children playing all sorts of games. Children today still play versions of some of the games shown.
He liked to paint a lot of small figures in a large space.
He was called Pieter the Elder. He had two sons who became famous painters. One of them was named Pieter, and he was called Pieter the Younger. His grandsons also became artists. This was quite an artistic family.

NAi Publishers/Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Against the backdrop of the dramatic and rapid changes in the political, religious and cultural situation in the Low Countries around the middle of the sixteenth century, this publication describes how Pieter Bruegel (b. Antwerp, c. 1525 - d. Brussels, 1569) captured the most important intellectual themes of his day in his drawings and prints in a manner that is both intriguing and innovative. These themes include the necessity of virtue and the danger of omnipresent sinfulness in the light of life after death, the often rather tense relations between city-dwellers and the peasants of the Flemish countryside, the ethical and social problem of poverty in an age of rising mercantile capitalism, and the importance of humour and satire in the culture of the middle classes. The book also considers the more 'traditional' topics of art history. Bruegel's indebtedness and tributes to Jheronimus Bosch and the imaginative power of the late Middle Ages are given as careful consideration as his fascination for the new formal language of the Italian Renaissance. No less important is a detailed consideration of the technical and stylistic virtuosity of the Master, including discussion of the techniques that Bruegel employed in order to achieve his results, and how his work compares to that of his contemporaries. Finally, using his work as a point of reference, an attempt is made to reconstruct a living portrait of this Antwerp artist, about whom so precious few facts are known.

Antwerp Name : Pieter Bruegel (The Elder)
Born : Breda (?), Netherlands
c.1525-30 Died : Brussels, Flanders (modern Belgium) September 1569
Although Bruegel was famous in his own lifetime, the archaic appearance of much of his imagery and his disinclination to adopt the idealized style of portraiture developed by the Italian Renaissance artists had, at least in sophisticated circles, an adverse effect on his reputation both during his lifetime and after his death. Since his works did not conform to the aesthetic theories of the time, the early art historians were inclined to disregard him and indeed there appears to have been little serious academic study of his work until the 20th century. Furthermore there are no extant records of his thoughts on art and no letters by his hand survive. The result is therefore an absence of significant detail concerning much of his life. The date and place of his birth are still not certain, although between 1525 and 1530 somewhere near Breda in the Netherlands is considered most likely. Until 1559 he spelt his name 'Brueghel', then changing to 'Bruegel'. The reason for this is unknown. According to the painter-historian Carel van Mander who included a life of the artist in his

PIETER BRUEGEL senior (Farmer Bruegel), 1525 - 1569
He was a Flemish Painter from Antweipen, where he begun painting in 1551. He was ap-proach by Hieronymus Bosch, and a study tour to Italy inspired him to paint landscapes.
There are 45 works by Bruegel fore sure, of which there are 14 in Vienna (Kunsthistorisches Museum). The main focus of his Painting content of pictures of the life and manners of the common people. The pictures are very detailed with a solid composition, fore example "Farmer Wedding" 1598 and "Farmer dance" 1598. The pictures are vivid described, some-times burlesque but without satirical excesses.
In subjects which shall be expressed symbolical he shows a deep insight for the dark sides of the life, fore example "The Beggar" from 1568 and "The Blind" from 1568. Bruegel made compositions with many figures on themes as "Playing Children" 1560 and " Flemish prover-bial sayings" 1559. Subjects from the Bible: "The murdering of the child's in Bethlehem" 1599 - 97, and sometimes landscapes with snow.
His intensity in painting landscapes is clear in his five "Monthly Pictures" 1565, fore example "Hunter in snow". Here he combine exactness of details with grandness in the composition. Bruegel was a skilled colourist, and he often worked with local colours which melted together to a harmonic comprehensive picture.
