Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1520?-1569), the great Flemish painter, was enormously popular during his lifetime due not so much to his paintings as to the wide dissemination of engravings based on his drawings. Through reproductions, Breugel's works have broad public popularity to this day, attesting to the universal appeal of his imaginative and superbly rendered images and, as well, the humanistic outlook that they reflect.
Information about Bruegel's life and work is spotty, creating an unending challenge for art scholars, especially in determining which works can be accurately attributed to him and which were by contemporaries, or were copies or outright forgeries. Over recent years, many works previously thought to be his have been found to be of questionable attribution and occasionally works previously thought to be by someone else have become accepted as his.

Oil on panel, 85 x 154 cm, Museo di Capodimonte, Naples. Bruegel's philosophical detachment, which was shared by his fellow humanists, also informs one of his last pictures, The Blind Leading the Blind. Its source is the Gospels (Matthew 15:12-19): Jesus, speaking of the Pharisees, says, " And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. " This parable of human folly recurs in humanistic as well as popular literature, and we know it in at least one earlier representation, but the tragic depth of Bruegel's forceful image gives new urgency to the theme. He has used continuous narrative to ingenious effect. Each succeeding pose becomes progressively more unstable along the downward diagonal, leaving us in little doubt that everyone will end up in the ditch with the leader. (The gap behind him is especially telling.) Perhaps he found the biblical context of the parable specially relevant to his time, which was marked by religious and political fanaticism, for Jesus continued: " Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders ... blasphemies.

He developed an original style that uniformly holds narrative, or story-telling, meaning. In subject matter he ranged widely, from conventional Biblical scenes and parables of Christ to such mythological portrayals as Landscape with the Fall of Icarus ; religious allegories in the style of Hieronymus Bosch ; and social satires. But it was in nature that he found his greatest inspiration. His mountain landscapes have few parallels in European art. Popular in his own day, his works have remained consistently popular. Bruegel died in Brussels between Sept. 5 and 9, 1569.

29 x 40-1/2 in. This painting of the parable of the sower from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke is among the earliest signed paintings by Bruegel, one of the geniuses of Northern European painting. A lone peasant in the left foreground scatters seeds on an upland pasture. The seeds he has already sown have multipled in the fields below him to the right and in the middle distance. Across the river, a small crowd gathers to hear Jesus preaching. Bruegel left Antwerp in 1553 to study in Italy and on his return made drawings of the Alps, which influenced the detail and aerial perspective of the landscape in this painting.

Pieter Brueghel
Pieter Brueghel (1525-69), usually known as Pieter Brueghel the Elder to distinguish him from his elder son, was the first in a family of Flemish painters. You'll often find his name spelled as Bruegel (Pieter spelled it like that from 1559 onwards) or Breugel or Breughel.
He was born in Breda in the Duchy of Brabant, which is now part of The Netherlands but back then part of the Flanders.
Note: Flanders or Vlaanderen and the Netherlands (aka known as Holland) or Nederland share the same language. It's called Flemish, or "Vlaams" in Belgium and Dutch, or "Nederlands" in The Netherlands. And the name Holland, although it's often taken to mean the whole of the Netherlands, is really part of that country only, the area of the provinces called Zuid Holland and Noord Holland (South and North Holland).
Brueghel was accepted as a master in the Antwerp painters' guild in 1551, after being an apprentice of Coecke van Aelst, a leading Antwerp artist, sculptor, architect, and designer of tapestry and stained glass. Brueghel traveled to Italy in 1551 or 1552, completing a number of paintings, mostly landscapes, there. Returning home in 1553, he settled in Antwerp but ten years later moved permanently to Brussels. He married van Aelst's daughter, Mayken, in 1563. His paintings, including his landscapes and scenes of peasant life, stress the absurd and vulgar, yet are full of zest and fine detail. They also expose human weaknesses and follies. He was sometimes called the
