Michelangelo Buonarroti
Tanto nomini nullum par elogium . (No praise is sufficient for so great a man.) Michelangelo was a man of many-sided character, independent and persistent in his views and his endeavours. His most striking characteristic was a sturdy determination, guided by a lofty ideal. Untiring, he worked until far advanced in years, at the cost of great personal sacrifices. He was not, however, unyielding to the point of obstinancy. His productions in all departments of art show the great fertility of his mind. In literature he was a devoted student and admirer of Dante . A copy of the "Divine Comedy", ornamented by him with marginal drawings, has unfortunately been lost. Imitating the style of Dante and Petrarch SCULPTURE First Period Second Period To Michelangelo's second creative period (beginning 1505) belongs the statue of Christ which he carved for the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. It was sent to Rome in 1521 in charge of an assistant who was to add some last touches to the statue when it was put in position. The Saviour, a life-sized marble figure, holds the cross, sponge, and rod of hyssop Pius II and left the rest of the work unfinished. A bronze statue of David with the head of Goliath under his feet was sent to France and has since disappeared. A pen-and-ink sketch of this statue is still in the Louvre.

Michelangelo - Portrait
On Michelangelo's return to Rome, Pope Julius II gave him a commission that was to weigh heavily on him for over forty years: the monumental tomb of the Pope, conceived as a typical classical mausoleum that united sculpture and painting. Michelangelo spent eight months in Carrara to choose the most suitable marble but by then the Pope was more interested in the project of St. Peter's Church, which had been entrusted to Bramante, so that Michelangelo, disappointed and jealous, left Rome and went for a short period to Florence and then Bologna, where he was later to make his peace with the Pontiff.
In 1508 the Pope gave him an extremely important task to carry out: the decoration of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The five hundred square metre area was decorated by this man in four years of very hard work and this Neoplatonic interpretation of the Book of Genesis fully expresses the artistic ideals of the Renaissance. Julius II died in 1513 which brought the problem of his tomb up again: the second commission led to the creation of the Moses and the two Slaves in the Louvre but again it all came to nothing.

Michelangelo

The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo Buonarroti, almost certainly the most famous artist produced by Western civilization and arguably the greatest, is universally viewed as the supreme Renaissance artist. He created monumental works of painting, sculpture, and architecture and left an additional legacy of numerous letters and poems. Through this vast and multifaceted body of artistic achievement, Michelangelo made an indelible imprint on the Western imagination.
A member of an old and distinguished Florentine family, Michelangelo was born near Arezzo, Italy, on Mar. 6, 1475, and he died on Feb. 18, 1564, in Romea record of longevity that was as unusual as his precocity as an artist. Like his compatriot Donatello , Michelangelo to the end of his life saw himself primarily as a sculptor, once avowing that he drank in with his wet-nurse's milk the love of the stonecutter's tools. Always a Florentine patriot, even after he had expanded his art into a universal language, he exemplified the character of his native city: a passionate, proud, and independent man, he saw art as a sacred calling through which the dignity of human beings should be enhanced and celebrated. His lifelong fascination with the sublime form of the human body arose from this thoroughly Florentine sensitivity to the inherent worth and nobility of individuals.
The impact of Michelangelo's education and the scope of his artistic potential are lucidly illuminated in his first relief, the

MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI
Born in the Tuscan town of Caprese in 1475, he was one of the greatest exponents of late-Renaissance art, and together with Raphael , founder of the styles of Classicism and Mannerism . He learned the basic rudiments of painting and sculpture with Domenico Ghirlandaio and Bertoldo di Giovanni, a pupil of Donatello respectively. He quickly threw himself into his artistic work, creating his first noteworthy statues: the "Virgin of the Steps" (1490-92) and the "Battle of the Centaurs" at the Buonarroti house in Florence. He then moved to Bologna for a time, and in the Church of St. Dominic he sculpted "St. Petronius", "St. Proclus" and an "Angel" (1494-95) as the crowning part of a marble arch. He then went to Rome, where he created "Bacchus" (1496-97), now at the Bargello Museum in Florence, and the world famous "Pietà" (1496) in St. Peter's (see under pietà ), in which the intense grief of the Virgin is realistic, just as the muscles, nerves and expressions are"real". From a slightly later date is the "Virgin and Child" (1498-1501) at the Notre-Dame church in Bruges, and the "Pitti Virgin" (1503) at the Bargello Museum, an excellent example of bas-relief on a tondo, the circular shape he later used for some of his paintings, suchas the famous "Doni tondo" or "Holy Family and St. Giovannino"
