2. Giverny Trees, Wind, And Snow -by- Theodore Earl Butler

Theodore Earl Butler Giverny Trees, Wind, and Snow, 1892-1893 Oil on canvas, 24 x 25 1/2 in. Gift of Dr. James Jackson Theodore Butler, an Ohio native, began his training at the Art Students League in New York City in 1882 with William Merritt Chase. Several years later he went to Paris, studying at the Academie Julian, the Atelier Colarossi, and the Grande Chaumiere. At the latter he studied with Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran (1837-1917), a considerably more liberal painter than his fellow academicians. While under Carolus-Duran's tutelage, Butler first began to draw spontaneously and to paint with bold color. In the spring of 1888 Butler arrived in Giverny, the small village northwest of Paris that was the home of Claude Monet (1840-1926). Of the many American impressionist painters who worked in late nineteenth-century France and in Giverny, Theodore Butler became one of the closest to Monet. With his marriage in July 1892 to Suzanne Hoschede-Monet, Monet's stepdaughter, Butler became a member of both Monet's artistic and familial circles, taking up permanent residence in Giverny. There he worked in a manner largely derived from Monet and painted many of the same subjects. When Suzanne died in 1899, Butler married yet another stepdaughter, Marthe. He acted as an important resource for other Americans in Giverny well into the twentieth century. This winter scene was painted shortly after Butler's marriage to Suzanne. The degree to which form is dissolved is uncharacteristic of most American impressionists, whose academic training left them resistant to sacrificing clarity of line. Akin to Monet's interest in atmospheric effects, this work records the transformations in nature's hues resulting from winter light. In a letter written in February 1893 to his friend and fellow American impressionist Philip Leslie Hale, Butler wrote, "You missed the finest weather of your life, a week of most extraordinary snow effects."

Theodore Earl Butler Garden Path with Iris, 1907 Oil on canvas, 28 1/2 x 14 1/2 in. Gift of Dr. Virgil H. Stucki This intimate flower painting may have been done at Butler's or Monet's home in Giverny. In 1907, the year it was painted, long rows of tall iris bordered the paths in Monet's garden. Garden Path with Iris resembles works by Theodore Butler's famous father-in-law in its focus on this particular motif from nature and the somewhat abstracted organic forms. The floral beauty to be found at Giverny that attracted Butler was recorded by one of Monet's many visitors and close friend Octave Mirbeau. The irises raise their strange, curved petals, bedecked with white, mauve, lilac, yellow, and blue, streaked with brown stripes and purplish dots, evoking in their complicated underparts, mysterious analogies, tempting and perverse dreams. Butler may not have embraced such an intensely provocative interpretation, but his flowers do appear vitally animated, gesticulating into the surrounding space. As a floral closeup

In a picture entitled Fish Weirs at Veules-les- Roses he captured an interesting atmospheric quality, but sacrificed his usual virtuoso brush technique and color range to achieve the softened tones of moisture-laden sea air. This was a contrast to works that had been done around Giverny. Similar in style and mood, La Mer a Quiberville has that same sense of moisture laden air as the foam rises from the waves breaking along the stone jetty that juts out, from left to right, along the bottom third of the painting. A sailboat is being tossed about by the waves and there are people standing on the jetty viewing the scene before them. 132 South 17th Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103

School House under Snow
Un Jardin Maison Baptiste (1895, Metropolitan Museum of Art), an example of the French Impressionist painting that Butler learned at Monet's side, the artist used vibrating daubs of color to capture the hazy envelope of summer light found in the valley of the Seine. Monet was attracting many young American and English painters at this time, and Butler became the cornerstone of the American and English art colony that thrived in Giverny at the turn of the century.
As early as the 1890s, and through the first decade of the 20th-century, Butler experimented with decoratively patterned, abstracted interior scenes similar to those by Post-Impressionists such as Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. These works reflect his interest in pattern and color, animated with complementary dots of color dancing over an underlying matrix of repeated blocks of color. These paintings possess a formal power often associated with the works of the Nabis painters.
Butler was a member of the Salon des Independents, Paris, a life member of the Salon d'Automne, Paris, and a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists in New York. He exhibited his work regularly in Paris galleries, including the Galerie Vollard, the Galerie Thomas, and the Galerie Durand-Ruel. He also exhibited regularly in New York, and in Philadelphia at the annual exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His work was represented in the New York Armory Show in 1913.
