The compelling reality of Caravaggio's painting, however, does not make him a "realist". On the contrary, his art is fantastic and his representation of the natural world uses mimesis to intensify erotic and religious vision. We are so confused by the warm flesh of the angel in The Rest on the Flight into Egypt that we accept the strangest thing about him: he has wings; we are so fixated on the brightness of Caravaggio's compositions that the abstract mystery of their setting only registers unconsciously, as a given of the inexplicable.

HOME DEREK JARMAN THE CAST PHOTO GALLERY Caravaggio (1571-1610) Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, born in 1571 the son of a mason, is now considered to be the last great artist of the Italian Renaissance. He was taught by a minor Milanese painter, Peterzano, and when he was about nineteen made for Rome. Assistant to the artist Cavaliere Cesare d'Arpino, his first patron was the Cardinal del Monte who employed him to paint genre pieces like "The Lute Player", and later won him the commission for his first large public religious paintings. Pioneer of a painting style using theatrical light, known as chiaroscuro , his style influenced artists as far afield as Rubens, Rembrandt and Velasquez. In 1606 he murdered a friend in a knife-fight and fled to Naples and Malta. He eventually settled in Naples and powerful friends, having obtained a pardon for the murder he had committed, made plans for him to return to Rome. However, the boat left without him as he was arrested, mistaken for a bandit. Destitute and despairing, he ran along the beach at Porto Ercole after his belongings which had sailed in the boat while he was in jail. He collapsed and died of a raging fever, brought on by heat and hunger, in 1610, when he was forty. Giora Shoham Tel Aviv University Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was born either on September 28 1573, as one authority has it, [ ] or between September and December 1571, according to another biographer. [ ] Either way, he was Gesualdo's contemporary. Since he was very fond of madrigalli and canzoni , he was quite probably playing, singing or humming some of the madrigals of the prince of Venosa. Caravaggio spent his early childhood in Lombardy, and was apprenticed about the age of 12 to a mediocre Milanese painter, Simone Peterzano, from whom he learned the basics of mixing paints, choosing brushes and constructing frames. After some years of apprenticeship in Milan, Michelangelo Caravaggio left for Rome. The first years in the capital were hard, meager and grim. At first, Caravaggio was employed by a Sicilian painter, Lorenzo, for whom he worked long hours for a pittance. Afterwards, he was engaged by the miserly Monsignor Pandolfo Pucci. Caravaggio nicknamed him 'Monsignor Insalata,' because all he fed his employee was vegetable salad. Summary Caravaggio's "Supper at Emmaus" (1601-2): Problems in refocusing, problems in the studio, problems with illumination Caravaggio figures prominently in Hockney's theory, yet this painting exposes numerous awkward implications of the theory related to refocusing, moving the canvas, and illumination. Supper at Emmaus Caravaggio, ca. 1601-2 Consider the first problem: refocusing. Hockney writes (p. 120): "Peter's right hand seems larger than his left, which is also nearer. These may be deliberate artistic decisions, or may be a consequence of movements of lens [concave mirror] and canvas when refocusing because of depth-of-field problems." For this large painting (141 x 196 cm), it turns out that the image of Peter's left hand is just about life size (17 cm from tip of baby finger to tip of index finger), and the image of Peter's right hand is larger than you would expect from the perspective (as Mr. Hockney points out), yet still slightly smaller than his left (by about 10% linear measure). The magnification M is the ratio of the sizes of the image to the object. In this case, then, the magnification for the left hand is M = 1.0 and for his right hand M = 0.9.
