Emily Carr
This paper looks at the life and art of Emily Carr. The development of her craft through different phases, her thought processes, spirituality and influences are all studied to gain an understanding of her art and artistic stance. While she dabbled in pottery and worked as a cartoonist, the main focus of this research is on her paintings and writings. Emily Carr was born in Victoria, British Columbia on December 13, 1871 and past away on March 2, 1945. She was the offspring of Richard Carr and Emily Saunders and the second youngest of nine children. Emily's mother died in 1886 and her father and her older sister Edith died soon after in 1888. While a rebellious nature dominated her attitude from a young age, these events likely also helped shape her independence. She lived most of her life on Vancouver Island but did live in San Francisco for three years, five years in England and one year in France. Each of these experiences had a profound effect on her development. She moved to San Francisco because of the lack of art schools, art collections and professional artists in the Victoria area that she could learn from. Eventually a lack of finances forced her to return. After the California School of Design in San Francisco, she returned to Victoria to teach art classes to children. In 1899, Carr took up studies at the Westminster School of Art in London. And also attended sketching classes in Cornwall. In 1910, she enrolled in the Academie Colarossi in Paris. It was here that she would break away from her more traditional teachings. Unfortunately, her work was not received well when she returned to Vancouver. British Columbians were unwilling to deviate from the English landscape tradition (Dodd, 1984).

Emily Carr Emily Carr was born on a cold Victorian night on the thirteenth of December, 1871. The fifth child in a family of six, she was said to be the favorite, especially by her father. Emily loved her father immensely. Because of the attention her father gave to her, she wold walk him to and from work everyday. But Emily Carr would not grow up with her parents who died in her early teens. The year her father died she completed that year of high school but refused to go back. Instead Emily Carr, enrolled in a local art class with two other girls. Her classmates were leaving for London, England, to seriously pursue their art careers and Emily felt passionately about going also. She tried to persuade her eldest sister, Dede, to let her go but she refused. Afterward she asked her guardian, lawyer James Lawson, and with his permission Emily Carr studied at the California Schol of Design in San Fransisco. Even though Emily had been taking art classes since the age of eight, her sixteenth year marked the start of her formal training. Two years later she returned home where she taught art classis to children. Eventually Emily Carr went to England in 1899 and to France in 1910. Upon her return from France in the autumn of 1911, Emily continued a project she had begun in 1908. Emily would visit many native sites where she painted a record of villages, houses, and totem poles. By 1913, she had produced a large portfolio of work on the Indians but was unable to live off the art. She built a small apartment house in Victoria in order to earn money and spent most of the next nineteen years as its landlady.

Emily Carr's Vision of the Pacific Northwest
At the same time that the art of the Group of Seven was gaining popularity, Emily Carr was struggling to make a career for herself on the Canadian west coast. In some ways, Carr's art was very similar to the art of the Group of Seven and she eventually became close friends with Lawren Harris and other prominent Canadian nationalists of the day, who treated her as a kindred spirit. But, Carr's art and vision of Canada have also been called unique . Her family background, the region of the country in which she painted, the subjects she chose to paint, and her own ideas about Canada and Canadian art combined to produced a vision of the Canadian west coast which remains popular today. This vision and the art it led Carr to create distinguishes her as the best-know woman artist in Canadian history. Carr was born in Victoria, BC, on 13 December 1881. She died there in 1945. By the time of her death, she had become a well-recognized west coast artist and award-winning author whose fame has continued to increase. Carr was not always this well-known. Her struggle to make a place for herself in the world of Canadian art was long and, at times, frustrating. Carr was born into a middle-class, sternly religious family. She was a vivacious child who loved the wilderness, but who also upset her family by behaving in ways which were, at the time, considered inappropriate for young women. She began to take drawing lessons at the age of nine and by her teens had decided to become an artist. When her parents died, she left Victoria to study art in San Francisco, returned to British Columbia in 1893, and then travelled to London and Paris to continue her education.

You come into the world alone and you go out of the world alone, yet it seems to me you are more alone while living than even going and coming. Twenty can't be expected to tolerate sixty in all things, and sixty gets bored stiff with twenty's eternal love affairs. You always feel when you look it straight in the eye that you could have put more into it, could have let yourself go and dug harder. It is not all bad, this getting old, ripening. After the fruit has got its growth it should juice up and mellow. God forbid I should live long enough to ferment and rot and fall to the ground in a squash.
