With an architecture described as both "San Francisco Victorian" and "English Gingerbread," all agree that Emily Carr House is on the must-see list of Victoria's attractions. Centrally located only four blocks from the Inner Harbour and the Provincial Legislature, the house offers its visitors a chance to gain an insight into Canada's first and best known independent artist and writer. Emily was born here in 1871, a scant six months after British Columbia moved from British colonial status to becoming a province of the world's newest nation. She used her brushes and pens to proclaim her pride in this part of Canada for the rest of her life. In the restored rooms of the house, built in 1864, you'll enter into the same Victorian ambiance the Carr family would have known in the 1870s, and upstairs are several of their actual possessions, including some of Emily's pottery and sculpture. One room is now used as the "People's Gallery" to present the work of Canadian artists, and at the rear of the house a small gift shop offers a remarkably varied selection of items produced by Victoria artists and potters.
(Click on the map to view it in detail) The house is near Victoria's central Inner Harbour, at 207 Government Street, only a 10 minute walk south from the Royal B.C. Museum and the Legislative Buildings.

The Vancouver Art Gallery Emily Carr: Home and Work Canada's National Treasure Artist Emily Carr captured the spirit of the northwest coast She has been called "the Canadian Georgia O'Keeffe, the WASP Frida Kahlo." Although she died in 1945, she remains a living and vital presence in Canada. Her paintings are familiar, her books are all in print and widely read, her tempestuous life story is knit into the cultural fabric of the country. Yet just next door in the United States, she remains virtually unknown. The facts of Emily Carr's life, played out within the prim and proper Victorian social structure of Victoria, British Columbia, in the early decades of this century, are unusual enough even if she had not become one of the most considerable Canadian artists of her time. She courted eccentricity, was a confirmed contrarian, never married. She studied painting in San Francisco, England and France, and made a series of intrepid, sometimes foolhardy, journeys into the remote wilderness and islands of coastal British Columbia to visit and record native culture. Over a period of several decades Carr visited some 30 native village sites. The hundreds of sketches and watercolors she brought back from these journeys served as a continuing source of inspiration throughout her life.

Emily Carr is one of Canada's greatest and most loved artists. Feeling a spiritual connection with her subjects, Emily Carr painted both the landscape and native villages of Western Canada in a unique and modern style that was rejected during its time of production. After years of travel throughout the forests of British Columbia, failing health caused her to remain close to home where she wrote seven books based on her life. Today Emily Carr is highly regarded throughout the world and considered a national Heroine in Canada. Through reading her books and the study of her paintings (in poster form, or original) one is able to grasp just how incredible this woman was. Carr, Emily. Growing Pains
As can be seen in the quote above, Emily exhibited artistic talent from an early age. She began art lessons while still in school, receiving instruction from several of Victoria's resident artists. Some of her friends who also attended these lessons travelled to London, England to further their studies. Emily would like to have followed them, but unfortunately Emily's parents died while she was a teenager and finances were tight. After sending entrance drawings to the California School of Design, and being accepted for registration there, she was able to pursuade her guardian to enroll her in art studies. At the age of nineteen, Emily travelled to San Francisco and remained there as a student until December 1893 when she returned to Victoria. Over the next few years Emily taught art to children and saved her money to cover the costs of continuing her formal studies. In August 1899 she left Victoria for England and the Westminster School of Art. She soon found that living in London did not agree with her health and so moved on first to Cornwall, and later, to the art colony at Bushey, just outside London. In 1904, after a traumatic final year where she was hospitalized for many months, Emily returned to Victoria. "I had not learned very much, not half what I had intended to absorb once I got into the old country."
