Carr, Emily (1871-1945) Emily Carr was a noted Canadian painter and writer. She painted for most of her life and began her writing career only a few years before her death. Carr was born in Victoria, British Columbia. In 1904, she made the first of many visits to Indian villages in British Columbia. Most of her early paintings portray the Indian culture that she saw there. These works received little favorable attention, and so Carr gave up painting almost completely in 1913. In 1927, an exhibit of Carr's paintings at the National Gallery in Ottawa, Ont., brought her to the attention of the Group of Seven. The members of this group were nationally known Canadian landscape painters. They and their works inspired Carr to resume painting and encouraged her interest in landscapes. Most of her later paintings reflect her desire to capture the spirit of the vast forests of Canada's west coast. Carr's first book, Klee Wyck (1941), is a collection of stories about her experiences among the Indians. She also wrote six other books.

Gift of Mrs. J. P. Fell About Emily Carr Emily Carr, born in Victoria, British Columbia, is one of Canada's most renowned artists, significant as a landscape artist and a modernist. The most important BC artist of her generation, she is best known for her attention to the totemic sculpture of the First Nations people of British Columbia and the rain forests of Vancouver Island. Carr's work was first brought to the wider Canadian art public when it was represented in the 1927 exhibition Canadian West Coast Art, Native and Modern. Through this exhibition she was introduced to the work of the Group of Seven and formed an important friendship with Lawren Harris that influenced her work from then on. The Vancouver Art Gallery's Emily Carr Trust Collection constitutes the most significant holding of works by Carr in the world. This collection, which was selected by her friend and artistic trustee, Lawren Harris, has been supplemented by purchases and gifts to the Gallery and now includes more than 200 objects covering the period c. 1890 to 1942. Some highlights of the collection are Zunoqua of the Cat Village Big Raven , 1931, and Scorned as Timber, Beloved of the Sky

Emily Carr Biography: British Columbia-born artist and writer, Emily Carr (also known as ME Carr) painted the skies, forests and Native Indian cultures of the Pacific Northwest in a style noted for its intense energy and shimmering light. Carr studied art in San Francisco and England and visited France in 1910-11, but it was in the remote native Indian villages of her home province that she found creative inspiration. One of Canada's most famous painters, her career is testimony to the fact that achievement is not reserved for the young. Carr was 57 years old before her paintings gained national critical attention, and it was in the years that followed that she created the body of work on which her reputation rests.

Carr, Emily (1871-1945). Courtney Milne writes in Emily Carr Country: Emily Carr has incited riots of creative endeavour and artistic pursuit for more than a century. I feel honored and proud that my first book of the new millennium not only extols the overwhelming influence of Emily Carr's life and work, her words and paintings and awesome example, but also places our connection to the natural world as a fundamental source of our creativity. Emily has endowed us with the ultimate gift, a prescription for finding ourselves in Nature and the volition to express our oneness with all Creation, regardless of what art form we might choose. Fortunately, as we are propelled into the twenty-first century we live in a country, Canada, whose wilderness still has the power to embrace us, can still help us to develop respect, compassion, and humility. My adventure into Emily Carr Country has spanned twenty years amounting to dozens of trips by foot, automobile, bus, train, ferry, horseback, helicopter, sea plane, camper, 4-wheel drive, bicycle, chairlift and cable car. I have even photographed from inside a garbage bag to protect my camera from the surf while attempting close-ups of the sunlight dancing on the foam bubbles as they drifted by my lens, only to burst with each incoming wave.

"A picture equals a movement in space. Pictures have swerved too much towards design and decoration... The idea must run through the whole, the story that arrested you and urged the desire to express it, the story that God told you through that combination of growth. The picture side of the thing aids the relationship of the objects to each other in one concerted movement, so that the whole gets up and goes, lifting the looker with it, sky , sea, trees affecting each other... One must ascertain first whether your subject is a slow lolling one or smooth flowing and serene, or quick and jerky, or heavy and ponderous." (1) Emily Carr was a remarkable West Coast painter and is, perhaps, Canada's best known woman artist. Not only a painter and a writer, she also kept a small rooming house in Victoria, British Columbia. In her search for just the right scenes to depict the rich culture of the Northwest Coast indigenous people and the dense forest of the West Coast, Carr travelled to remote regions of British Columbia. Born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1871, Carr first studied art in San Francisco, California and then in Europe, in London and Paris. When she exhibited some of her paintings in Vancouver, inspired by her experience in France, the exhibition brought little success. Disillusioned and discouraged, Carr supported herself by being a landlady.

New! Emily Carr
Between 1905 and 1910, she returned to the northern British Columbia coast during the summer to paint canvases of Indian villages and totem poles. In 1910, she had again saved enough money to go abroad, this time travelling to Paris with her sister Alice. She tried to study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, but found this too difficult since all instruction was in French. She eventually studied under Harry Gibb at Crécy-en-Brre in Brittany, and became influenced by the Fauves. In 1912, she returned to Victoria and Vancouver, where she held an exhibition of her French paintings. She continued painting Indian villages in her newly acquired style, but the public, which also cost her teaching opportunities, rejected these works. Finally, in 1913, having neither pupils nor a market for her work, she returned home to live with her sisters in Victoria. With her share of the Carr family property, she built a four-suite apartment house, arranging her studio in one suite and renting out the others. She also produced pottery, which she decorated with Indian motifs and sold to tourists. She abandoned painting for about 15 years, running her rooming house, raising Old English bobtail sheepdogs, and making pottery and other tourist items.
