Michael Ray Charles, 1989-1997 An American Artist January 24 - March 29, 1998
Michael Ray Charles, OOOP'S acrylic and mixed media on paper, 60 1/4" x 33 3/4" x 63" Spike Lee recalls, "The first time I saw his work it was a revelation to me. I said to myself, who is this guy? Where has he been and when can I meet him?" Michael Ray Charles is a major young artist who came on the scene with a vibrancy and originality that positioned good with evil and stereotypical with positive imagery. His work serves as a beacon of social consciousness, keeping us attuned to the fact that the stereotypes that have greeted us for over 400 years on packages, posters, advertising, and mass media resonate profoundly throughout our culture. His revised depictions of characters such as Sambo, Buckwheat, and Aunt Jemima parody the racial stereotyping found in American pop culture. The issue he addresses include the tendency of tobacco and liquor companies to target marketing to minorities, the depiction of African-Americans in the entertainment and sports industries, and concepts of an all-American (white) beauty. 13. Michael Ray Charles Text
michael ray charles Paintings michael ray charles is familiar with the power of images, not only with the images he creates but also with the those that persist in our collective conscience.
http://www.albrightknox.org/pastexh/MRCharles/MRCtext.html
Michael Ray Charles: Paintings
While attentive to the lessons of formal concerns in painting, Charles was still able to establish his own voice. For example, in a 1991 series of works painted in gradations of black and white (done during graduate school), he incorporated isolated images of African-American children within within a detail of an American flag. While such statements are not unique, these earliest works, with titles such as The Y-T-IN-U and
White on Black: Images of Africa and Blacks in Western Popular Culture , the author refers to the disheartening fact that a 1933 assessment of "the main types of blacks in American fiction" was practically replicated in the 1977 recognition of the dominant stereotypes of black Americans found in films: toms - they served their masters well;
coons - funny men; all blacks are stupid;
mammies - sexless archmothers;
bucks - bestial superstuds.
Charles effectively acknowledges such categorical definitions through his own contemporary twist on the imagery, along with an element of black humor. One method was the development of his own imaginary product line, with logo, known as "Forever Free." He has since incorporated the reference into all of his work. In a series of paintings on paper that appear to be magazine covers, Charles referred to the popular and well-known graphic illustrations of Norman Rockwell for The Saturday Evening Post (Forever Free Post) Love Thy Neighbor (Forever Free Post) Wonder Woman

An American Artist's Work By Don Bacigalupi and Marilyn Kern-Foxworth
Introduction by Spike Lee Michael Ray Charles is a painter whose carefully crafted and faux-aged canvases and works on paper draw attention to race relations historically and in contemporary society. Borrowing pop culture images of characters such as Sambo, Buckwheat, and Aunt Jemima, Charles uses them ironically to comment on racial issues. His concerns range from how tobacco and liquor companies target marketing to minorities to the depiction of African Americans in the entertainment and sports industries to concepts of all-American (i.e., white) beauty. This book is the catalog of the first major solo exhibition of Charles' work, staged by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. It contains a broad range of color images of paintings and works on paper. In addition to the catalog entries, the book contains an interview between exhibit curator Don Bacigalupi, catalog essayist Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, and artist Michael Ray Charles, in which the artist discusses and interprets his work. An essay by writer and cultural historian Marilyn Kern-Foxworth situates Charles' work within contemporary African American culture. Don Bacigalupi is the Director and Chief Curator of Blaffer Gallery Facing Difference: Race, Gender, and Mass Media

Dr. Edmund Gordon, UT anthropology professor, during the Austin Museum of Art panel discussion: "Stereotypes are the basis of racism, not ideas... Not to discuss them is to run the risk of perpetuating them." Mia Carter, audience participant during the Austin Museum of Art panel discussion: "I want my kids to see this work in this kind of space [at the museum]." Houston artist Garry Reese, describing his child's reaction to Charles' painting Beware in an open letter published in ArtLies magazine: "Daddy, what is that?" "That, my dear, is a SAMBO." "A sambo, oh yeah. He's Blaack!" "Yeah, he is." "He's got hair like Kevin." "No, baby, Kevin's hair doesn't," Oh hell no, it must not stick, this self-hate thing, this bullcorn, with the hair, with everything, it must not take hold, "stick up like that. It falls down, remember, and it smells good, too." "Oh yeah." And then she kept turning the pages and looking.

Could you talk a little about this and how you view your own work with respect to this response? CHARLES: context of now, and the context of how they're presented - some people have managed to see that, okay, this is something that I could at least think about quite differently than I initially had. In other words, a lot of blacks have accused me of perpetuating stereotypes , and I think there's a fine line between perpetuating something and questioning something. I like to get as close to it as possible in order, I guess, to create that tension, to evoke thought and to have people question how they deal with these images. I've seen some black folks refer to these images as black folks. I've seen and heard white folk refer to these images as black folks. And it's really disturbing. They don't say images, they don't say representations, whether grotesque or accurate or
