Portland, ME, USA
From January 18 through March 18, 2001, the Portland Museum of Art will present a retrospective exhibition of works by Frederic Edwin Church, the most famous and distinguished American landscape painter of the 19th century, and the foremost member of the second generation of the Hudson River School. In Search of the Promised Land: Paintings by Frederic Edwin Church, organized by the Berry-Hill Gallery, New York, commemorates the centennial of the artist’s death and the memorial Church exhibition held that year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In Search of the Promised Land comprises 44 paintings, most of them lent by museums and private collectors. Its features some of the artist’s most memorable and monumental canvases including Niagara Falls from the American Side (1867) from the National Gallery of Scotland, and Morning in the Tropics from the National Gallery of Art. In addition to the large public works, the show covers a range of medium size and small, intimate but equally awe-inspiring pictures, which he created either as studies for the major works or as personal and highly skillful sketches. Known at first for his ravishing views of domestic scenery, particularly of the Hudson Valley region, Church was a visionary painter who explored far-off places from the Arctic North to the South American tropics to the exotic Near East. His magnificent home and studio overlooking the Hudson, which he called Olanareferring to the Latin name of a treasure-storehouse in Persia near one of the presumed sites of the earthly Paradise is one of the architectural wonders of its time and is a melange of the Oriental and Moorish styles that he so admired.

Natural History Science From Thomas Cole to Frederic Edwin Church Cole had one student, Frederic Edwin Church. This painting is a typical example of his early work. The mountain, chronicled in Thoreau's The Maine Woods, represented nonhuman wilderness to the people of New England. Church placed a rural scene in the foreground to show a harmony of the human world with wildness. Church's approach to painting changed after reading Alexander Humboldt's The Cosmos. In the book, that noted scientist lamented that he had not taken an artist with him to paint the lands that he studied. One year later, Church left for South America to retrace Humboldt's scientific journeys.

Twilight in the Wilderness Oil on canvas
Location: Gallery 230 Although this is a convincing landscape, it does not depict a specific place. Church created it by combining several different sketches made in Maine and New York. The dramatic light electrifying the entire composition is based on sunsets he witnessed from the window of his New York City studio. Perhaps the artist intended twilight to suggest the end of a cosmic cycle-a meaning that coincides with the feeling that the Civil Was (imminent in 1860 when this picture was made) would change American civilization forever. The panoramic splendor created by brilliant clouds floating above a tranquil landscape also suggests the divine authority of "manifest destiny," the idea that Americans of European stock had a right to the continent. Seen by large numbers of Americans in a touring exhibition organized by Church himself, this picture was marketed as essentially "American"-a comforting, patriotic image of the American wilderness. Henri Rousseau (French, 1844-1910)

54. The Voyage Of The Icebergs: Frederic Edwin Church's Arctic Masterpiece
The Voyage of the Icebergs frederic edwin church's Arctic Masterpiece.By Eleanor Jones Harvey. New Haven and London Yale University Press.
http://www.ric.edu/rpotter/harvey.html
The Voyage of the Icebergs: Frederic Edwin Church's Arctic Masterpiece By Eleanor Jones Harvey New Haven and London: Yale University Press Reviewed by Russell A. Potter Perhaps no image so crystallizes if one will pardon the pun the mid-nineteenth century's enduring obsession with the Arctic and its explorers as does Frederic Edwin Church's Icebergs . Church not only captured, in a single frame, the essence of the Arctic Sublime, but the variegated history of his stunning canvas closely parallels the rise and fall of the larger trans-Atlantic fascination with the "Frozen Regions" of which it is a part. Most strikingly, this enormously important canvas was, for more than a century, lost as lost as the crewmen of Sir John Franklin's vanished ships, in memory of whose deaths the broken mast in the painting's foreground was added by the painter as a silent but widely-recognized elegiac sign. After Icebergs with a Painter , which appeared just in time to serve as advance publicity for Church's "great painting of the North" when it debuted in New York in 1861. This fascinating story has been told before by Gerald L. Carr, whose book on Church's "Icebergs" was commissioned in 1979 by the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Carr contributes an essay to Harvey's new book, but it is not much more than a postscript to his earlier account; the main purpose of this new book, we are told, is to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Dallas Museum's acquisition of Church's masterpiece, and tell its story from the moment of its rediscovery in 1979. The story has all the makings of an international thriller, with art historians flying back and forth across the Atlantic, searching old real estate listings and auction records for any trace of a painting which, at 64 x 112 inches and nearly five hundred pounds unframed, would seem rather difficult to lose.

American artists of the mid-nineteenth century usually went to Europe or the western frontier in order to expand their repertoire. Frederic Church went first to the tropics and volcanoes of South America. His reasons make a fascinating chapter in the history of American art and thought.
Church was the best known pupil of Thomas Cole, who recognized the singularity of American wilderness landscape and was the first to invest it with heroic grandeur. Church, like other painters of his generation, John Kensett, Sanford R. Gifford, and Jasper Cropsey, sketched and painted the Catskills and mountains of New England. In his early pictures he gave to water a reflective, burnished surface, to sunset clouds dramatic color and substance, and painted distant detail so clearly that his picture space seems filled with transparent radiance. By the early 1850s Church was not only painting views of specific American places with topographical exactitude, he was also combining separate elements of meticulously detailed scenery into landscapes of heroic breadth and depth.
