Thomas Cole has long been known as the founder of the Hudson River School. He has also come to be recognized as a romantic landscape painter of comparable importance to American culture as John Constable is to England's or Caspar David Friedrich to Germany's. Born in England in Cole emigrated with his parents to Pennsylvania in Already trained as an engraver, the aspiring painter set out to capture the still largely unexplored American wilderness. In a now familiar story, when Cole first exhibited his landscapes in New York City in they enthralled two of America's most prominent artists, John Trumbull and William Dunlap, both of whom immediately recognized the freshness and vitality of the young artist's vision.
From essentially topographical records of America's mountains, rivers, and forests, Cole moved quickly to incorporate incidents from James Fenimore Cooper's newly-published novels in his landscapes, thereby elevating those landscapes to the stature of history painting. Indeed, Cole seemed happiest when he could give full rein to his poetic imagination, as in such monumental series as The Course of Empire New-York Historical Society), initially conceived by the artist during his first trip to Europe, from

Thomas Cole Biography Thomas Cole was born in 1801 at Bolton, Lancashire in Northwestern England and emigrated with his family to the United States in 1818. During the early years Cole lived for short periods in Philadelphia, Ohio, and Pittsburgh where he worked as an intinerant portrait artist. Although primarily self-taught, Cole worked with members of the Philadelphia Academy, and his canvasses were included in the Academy's exhibitions. In 1825, Cole discovered the haunting beauty of the Catskills wilderness. His exhibition of small paintings of Catskills landscapes came to the attention of prominent figures on the New York City art scene including Asher B. Durand, who became a life-long friend and his fame spread. While he was still in his twenties, Cole was made a fellow of the National Academy. In 1829-1831, Cole returned to Britain for study and to attend to family business and to travel to France and Italy. These years were among the most happy and productive of his life. Cole met a large number of wealthy Americans traveling abroad and received numerous commissions from them, increasing his reputation and stature. Cole returned to New York City in November of 1832 and mounted an exhibition of his European paintings which aroused considerable public interest. During the Spring of 1832, Cole first established his rural studio in Catskill, New York, when he rented a small outbuilding at

Thomas Cole
Thomas Cole is often called the "Father of the Hudson River School of Art." In 1826 he helped to found the National Academy of Design in New York City. In 1827 he made his first visit to the White Mountains. While best known for his allegorical paintings such as the Voyage of Life and the Course of Empire series, he did many White Mountain paintings including Flume in the White Mountains View of Mount Washington Mount Chocorua Notch in the White Mountains View Near Conway ; and Mount Washington from the Upper Saco Intervale Dubbed the Founder of the Hudson River School, Cole was apprenticed to a calico designer and wood engraver in England before he came to the United States with his family in 1818. He helped to found the NAD in 1826. The rest of his life he spent much of his time sketching from nature in the Catskills, White Mountains, Adirondacks, and the coast of Maine. In 1827, at the behest of Daniel Wadsworth, Cole visited the White Mountains for the first time. He vistited the New Hampshire mountains again a year later with fellow artist Henry Cheever Pratt, only eight years after the first footpath was opened to Mount Washington. He returned to New Hampshire for the last time in 1839.

Cole, Thomas Cole, Thomas, , American landscape painter, b. England. He arrived in the United States in 1818 and moved to Ohio, where he was impressed by the beauty of the countryside. In 1825 he went to New York, where his landscape paintings began to be appreciated. Largely self-taught, he depicted the scenery of the Hudson River valley and the Catskills, which he discovered on long walking trips, becoming a leader of the Hudson River school . In 1829 he went to Europe, where he spent some time sketching in England and Italy. In Paris he greatly admired the landscapes of Claude Lorrain. After he returned to New York, he was commissioned (1832) to paint his five famous allegorical scenes, farfetched and neoclassical in style, known as the Course of Empire (N.-Y. Historical Soc., New York City). This series and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (Mus. of Fine Arts, Boston) reflect his strong moralizing tendencies, combined with elements of fantasy; they are far less successful than his landscapes. Other works, such as Oxbow (Metropolitan Mus.) and
