At the age of 26 he abandoned a commercial career for art, and from the first showed a strong vocation for landscape painting. He lived in Paris, but travelled about France making sketches from nature and from these he composed in his studio. In addition to his journeys in France, he visited England, the Low Countries, Switzerland, and Italy three times (1825-28, 1834, and 1843). Throughout his life Corot found congenial the advice given to him by his teacher Achille-Etna Michallon `to reproduce as scrupulously as possible what I saw in front of me'. On the other hand he never felt entirely at home with the ideals of the Barbizon School, the members of which saw Romantic idealization of the countrysite as a form of escapism from urban banality, and he remained more faithful to the French

Corot, Camille

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 19th century and, with Constable, as one of the supreme masters of the period. Corot is associated with the Barbizon school, but with the influence of the Dutch and English landscape traditions. The Barbizon artists derived their style from Dutch 17th century landscapists as well as recent English artists. In the landscapes of the Barbizon artists, indigenous scenery replaced the foreign and the classical. Corot's etching style is epitomized by the spontaneity and effortless lines he rapidly drew. Corot's highly tuned sensitivity to landscape is apparent by the order he imposed on the line and their generally parallel directions. One does not perceive tangled vegetation and wildness so much as a cultivated, civilized nature. In "Le Dome Florentin" the domed building in the distance and vegetation complete the sense of serene harmony between the human and the natural.

If Edgar Degas longed to be "celebrated and unknown," it was Corota painter Degas greatly admiredwho achieved this paradoxical wish. His self-effacing devotion to his art, and especially to landscape, helped to pry open the jaws of academic convention. He claimed to have "only one goal in life ... to make landscapes," a commitment that precluded any other "serious attachment," including marriage. Corot was born in 1796, and his 200

Through he represented nature realistically, he did not idealize the peasant or the labors of agriculture in the manner of Millet and Courbet , and was uninvolved in ideological controversy.
