Previous / Gustave Courbet of 3 Born 1819, Died 1877 Painter, Draftsman French "I, who believe that every artist should be his own teacher, cannot dream of setting myself up as a professor. . . . [F]or each artist, [art is] nothing but the talent issuing from his own inspiration and his own studies of tradition," wrote Gustave Courbet. Emphatic in his opinions and constantly defying authority, Courbet believed that painters should paint only their own time and that "painting is an essentially concrete art, and can consist only of representation of real and existing things." After leaving rural Ornans for Paris, he was most influenced by the seventeenth-century Spanish paintings and Dutch canvases that he saw in the Louvre and on a trip to Holland in 1847. By 1850, he was shocking the public with the Realism and scale of his paintings. In December of that year, he exhibited three huge canvases of contemporary peasant life at the Salon ; their enormous size was traditionally reserved for history paintings of more "important" subjects.

He studied in Paris, learning chiefly by copying masterpieces in the Louvre. An avowed realist, Courbet was always at odds with vested authority, aesthetic or political. In 1847 his Wounded Man (Louvre) was rejected by the Salon, although two of his earlier pictures had been accepted. He first won wide attention with his After Dinner at Ornans (Lille) in 1849. The next year he exhibited his famous Funeral at Ornans and Stonebreakers (both: Louvre). For his choice of subjects from ordinary life, and more especially for his obstinacy and audacity, his work was reviled as offensive to prevailing politics and aesthetic taste. Enjoying the drama, Courbet rose to defend his work as the expression of his newfound political radicalism. His statements did nothing to recommend the work to his enemies. Reacting against academic trends, both classicist and Romantic, he became a major exponent of realism , depicting contemporary life with an unflattering frankness. His Burial at Ornans (1850 Muse d'Orsay, Paris), showing ordinary working people gathered around a village grave, shocked the public and the critics with its vulgarity. His powerful genius found expression in portraiture, figure composition, landscape (the gorges and forests of his native Franche-Comte, and superb paintings of the Normandy coast, The Wave being famous in several versions), sensuous paintings of the nude, animal studies, and still life. He went to Paris 1841, his training mainly consisting in the study and imitation of old masters in the Louvre, especially Velzquez and Rembrandt. In defiance of both Romanticism and classicism he evolved the idea of realism, asserting, that is, that painting should consist in the representation of real and existing things, his aim therefore being, in his own words, to interpret the manners, ideas and aspect of our own time. Courbet, Gustave born June 10, 1819, Ornans, France died December 31, 1877, La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland French painter and leader of the Realist movement. Courbet rebelled against the Romantic painting of his day, turning to everyday events for his subject matter. His huge shadowed canvases with their solid groups of figures, such as The Artist's Studio (1855), drew sharp criticism from the establishment. From the 1860s a more sensuous and colourful manner prevailed in his work. Early life and work Courbet with a Black Dog The development of Realism The Revolution of 1848 ushered in the Second Republic and a new liberal spirit that, for a brief while, greatly affected the arts. The Salon held its exhibition not in the Louvre itself but in the adjoining galleries of the Tuileries. Courbet exhibited there in 1849, and his early work was greeted with considerable critical and public acclaim. In 1849 he visited his family at Ornans to recover from his hectic lifestyle in Paris and, inspired again by his native countryside, produced two of his greatest paintings: The Stone-Breakers and Burial at Ornans .
