THOUGHTS ON THE QUESTION: WHY DARGER?
By John M. MacGregor, Ph.D.
Why would an art-historian choose to devote ten years of his career to the work of a totally unknown artist, whose life as a dishwasher in Chicago was more than obscure, and whose work remained unexhibited, a secret world hidden in his room, until his death. I am often asked why I decided to devote a good part of my life to the study of Henry Darger. What motivates an art historian, specializing in the study of art and psychiatry, in his choice of an artist for research? What attracts the viewing public to such an unusual artist? Why do museums and galleries suddenly begin to exhibit this unknown and difficult work? To answer these far from simple questions, some of them very personal, I want to examine a little bit of the history of the area known as Art Brut, or outsider art. In 1922, Hans Prinzhorn, a German art-historian and psychiatrist, published what has proven to be his major work, Bildnerei der Geisteskranken [published in English, Artistry of the Mentally Ill , Springer, New York, 1995], the single most important study in art and psychiatry in this century. Prinzhorn intended to follow this introductory work with a second major contribution, a detailed investigation of one psychotic artist, a schizophrenic patient named Hermann Mebes. But sadly, Prinzhorn died in 1933, at the age of 47, and his planned monograph on Mebes never appeared.

One subject of interest to psychoceramicists is kook art. And it seems that, these days, kook art and "outsider art" is gaining in interest. One of the best known kook artists was probably Henry Darger. There is an exhibit of his work in the Museum of American Folk Art in New York (information and two sample images are at http://www.folkartmuse.org/exhibit/current/current.html ). There was also an article about Darger's work in TIME Magazine recently: [ http://pathfinder.com/time/magazine/1997/dom/970224/the_arts_art.a_life_of.html

••• John MacGregor Unlocks Henry Darger's Unreal Realms
The Outsiders
by Ed Park April 17 - 23, 2002 John MacGregor has been on every page of Henry Darger's novel. There are 15,145 of them. (photo: John MacGregor) Permit me to be terrified. —Klee on Van Gogh Darger lived most of his life on the north side of Chicago, spending his last 31 years at 851 Webster Avenue, in a large third-floor room. The artist Nathan Lerner bought the building in 1956. Lerner was a photographer and educator associated with Moholy-Nagy's New Bauhaus in Chicago, as well as the product designer responsible for the first sponge mop and the honeybear bottle. His enduring legacy, however, has its roots in the kindness he showed toward his aged, reclusive tenant, whose presence some of his younger residents didn't exactly cherish. Lerner (who died in 1997) kept Henry's rent low, even knocking off a quarter of the $40-a-month tab at Henry's suggestion. The story used to end—or begin—like this: After Henry died at the nursing home, Lerner and one of the other tenants started to dispose of the contents of his amazingly cluttered apartment, wisely stopping upon discovering hundreds of paintings, beautiful and unspeakably strange, bound in huge books. The scroll-like compositions were unlike anything ever seen before, antic with nightmare weather, enormous flora, and young girls sporting penises. Along with vibrant storybook vistas were scenes of discomfiting (if masterfully orchestrated) violence: Men known as Glandelinians subjected the children to strangulation, blasphemous crucifixion, and anatomically accurate evisceration. Also in the room, packed in trunks, was more than a half-century's worth of writing, including the sub-rosa magnum opus that his artwork illustrated. (At 15,145 pages

HEROINE ADDICTION
BY DARCEY STEINKE
nce, when my brothers and I were still in elementary school, we found a folder on the front steps of our house in suburban Pennsylvania. The folder contained newsprint pictures of Miss America pasted inside and a story written out in the tiniest script I'd ever seen. Jesus and several beauty queens were characters in the strange narrative that featured castration as well as lots of other gruesome stuff. The author of the work, we found out after dinner, was a former inmate at the state mental hospital where my father was a chaplain. This was my first exposure to violent obsession manifested in language, and though my father insisted the man was harmless, I was scared enough to sleep with a baton under my bed. By all accounts Henry Darger was also a strange and harmless creature. In his threadbare work shirt, black electrical tape holding the frames of his glasses together, he traversed his Chicago neighborhood, going to mass three times a day and collecting bits of string. But Darger was much more than a local eccentric; he was also an artistic innovator, appropriating images from newspapers and coloring books for his own work 20 years before Warhol and Lichtenstein began the practice. From his one-room apartment in Wicker Park, Darger created and illustrated a 15,000-page novel entitled In the Realms of the Unreal . Its heroines are the seven Vivian sisters in their baby-doll dresses and mary janes. They carry multicolored parasols and giant strawberries as they run from insidious purple clouds. They fight the evil, child-enslaving Gladelinians while in the background giant petunias bloom and ducks float midair. Sometimes while recuperating at their hideout, Jennie Richee, a few of the girls grow ram's horns on their heads; meanwhile Daisy, the oldest Vivian, sweeps and their compatriot, Rattlesnake Boy, mops up the place. Often the sisters are on horseback doing circus tricks as they flee from the "boobhead" who is trying to boil them alive in a geyser.

Thank heaven for little girls. (watercolors; Henry Darger; traveling exhibition) Author/s: Richard Vine Issue: Jan, 1998 To illustrate his epic tale of young princesses in peril, the solitary and artistically self-taught Henry Darger created hundreds of collaged watercolors. A traveling show now reveals the techniques he used to convey an internal "civil war" that could find resolution only in religious grace. The classic precedent for this work, however, is not the frescoes of Giotto or Piero della Francesca, but the half-mad illustrated epics of William Blake. For Darger, verbally prolific to an almost unimaginable degree, shared with the proto-Romantic poet a capacity for do-it-yourself production of arresting graphic images and likewise created whole worlds from a combination of conventional piety and idiosyncratic obsession.
