Louvre, Paris This represents the moment in the ceremony when Napoleon crowns Josephine. As an aside, Napoleon invited Pope Pious VII to the ceremony. The Pope thought that he was going to crown Napoleon and Napoleon would pledge allegiance to the Holy Roman Empire. But Napoleon took the crown from the Pope's hands and crowned himself. He then crowned Josephine. The detail shows Napoleon and the Pope. David was named "First Painter to the Emperor" and chosen to do four pictures, he only finished two, this was one of them. Jacques-Louis David's 'Marat'
Edited by Will Vaughn, Helen Weston
Hardback In stock This book focuses on Jacques-Louis David’s ‘Marat’, one of the key works of art created during the period of the French Revolution and one of the most important works of Western painting. Providing an introduction that outlines the general history of the painting, it provides six new essays, each specially written for this volume, which examine the work from a variety of methodologies, including feminist, psychoanalytic and material analysis approaches. Each of these essays provides for a broader and deeper understanding of the painting, the circumstances in which it was created and commissioned, and its critical and art historical reception over two centuries.

Mike's Notes: Jacques-Louis David was a major French painter. Apparently, though he died in Belgium, his heart longed for Paris, so that's exactly how they buried him: his body (minus heart) is buried in Brussels, Belgium, and his heart is buried in Paris, France. He is justly famous for his painting "The Coronation of Napoleon," which hangs a few kilometers away from his heart's burial place, in the Louvre Museum of Paris.

ARTIST INDEX GO BACK David, Jacques-Louis David, Jacques-Louis (1748-1825). French painter, one of the central figures of Neoclassicism.
He had his first training with Boucher , a distant relative, but Boucher realized that their temperaments were opposed and sent David to Vien. David went to Italy with the latter in 1776, Vien having been appointed director of the French Academy at Rome, David having won the Prix de Rome. In Italy, David was able to indulge his bent for the antique and came into contact with the initiators of the new Classical revival, including Gavin Hamilton. In 1780 he returned to Paris, and in the 1780s his position was firmly established as the embodiment of the social and moral reaction from the frivolity of the Rococo.

His uncompromising subordination of color to drawing and his economy of statement were in keeping with the new severity of taste. His themes gave expression to the new cult of the civic virtues of stoical self-sacrifice, devotion to duty, honesty, and austerity. Seldom have paintings so completely typified the sentiment of an age as David's The Oath of the Horatii (Louvre, Paris, 1784)
