Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1859. He went on to study medicine at Edinburgh University, where he was inspired by the methods of diagnosis of Joseph Bell, professor of anatomy. These methods later became the basis for Sherlock Holmes' powers of deduction. Conan Doyle set up practice as a doctor in Southsea, England in 1882 and began to write. A Study in Scarlet , first published in 1887, introduced the public to Sherlock Holmes, a brilliant and shrewd detective. Doctor Watson, Holmes' friend and chronicler detailed Holmes' ability to solve virtually any criminal problem presented to him. Mary Doyle [below] - Arthur's mother. Both were treated as living persons, so compelling was Conan Doyle's portrayal. Readers were so impressed by Holmes and his amazing skills of detection that more stories followed. When Conan Doyle tired of the character and brought about what seemed the end of Holmes in The Final Problem, loyal followers were outraged. Conan Doyle finally relented and Holmes was reinstated at

In 1855, Charles Altamont and Mary Foley Doyle were married. Four years later, on May 22, 1859, Mary gave birth to Arthur Conan Doyle in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was one of ten children, of which seven survived to adulthood. The Doyle family were Catholic with roots in Ireland. Arthur's father was a civil servant most of his life, working for the Edinburgh Office of Works. Arthur's mother ran a boarding house. bodyOffer(32402) Arthur entered Hodder Prep, a Jesuit-run school, in 1868. Two years later, he moved to Stonyhurst public school, another Jesuit-run educational institution. At Stonyhurst, he was noted for his untidiness and his determination to go his own way. His nature responded to kindness and rebelled against threats. Arthur spent a good portion of his time in the headmaster's office. The only suggestion of a literary nature during this time was a year spent as editor of the Stonyhurst school magazine. In 1874, Arthur took and passed his university matriculation exam. Before entering Edinburgh University in 1876, he spent a year at a Jesuit school in Austria brushing up on his German. A lack of money during school required him to take outside jobs to earn money for tuition. During the summer of 1878, he worked with a doctor in general practice. Charles Doyle, Arthur's father, entered a nursing home in 1879, suffering from epilepsy and alcoholism. This was hard on the Doyle family. Arthur worked in a Shropshire country practice to earn extra money to send home to his family. He doubled up on his studies so he could spend more time working. In the same year, Arthur sold his first short story to Chambers' Journal.

Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Doyles were a prosperous Irish-Catholic family, who had a prominent position in the world of Art. Charles Altamont Doyle, Arthur's father, a chronic alcoholic, was the only member of his family, who apart from fathering a brilliant son, never accomplished anything of note. At the age of twenty-two, Charles had married Mary Foley, a vivacious and very well educated young woman of seventeen. Mary Doyle had a passion for books and was a master storyteller. Her son Arthur wrote of his mother's gift of "sinking her voice to a horror-stricken whisper" when she reached the culminating point of a story. There was little money in the family and even less harmony on account of his father's excesses and erratic behavior. Arthur's touching description of his mother's beneficial influence is also poignantly described in his biography, "In my early childhood, as far as I can remember anything at all, the vivid stories she would tell me stand out so clearly that they obscure the real facts of my life." After Arthur reached his ninth birthday, the wealthy members of the Doyle family offered to pay for his studies. He was in tears all the way to England, where for seven years he had to go to a Jesuit boarding school. Arthur loathed the bigotry surrounding his studies and rebelled at corporal punishment, which was prevalent and incredibly brutal in most English schools of that epoch.

During the nineteenth century folklore and fairy myths were collected by, among others, Sir Walter Scott, Thomas Crofton Croker and Thomas Keightley; the brothers Grimm's collection of tales was translated into English as German Popular Stories in 1823 and Hans Andersen's stories were translated from the Danish in 1847. In the Victorian era, fairy tales were read by all ages and not relegated to the nursery. Dickens wrote "in a utilitarian age, of all other times, it is a matter of grave importance that fairy tales should be respected". Dickens himself, William Makepeace Thackeray, John Ruskin, Charles Kingsley and George MacDonald all wrote original tales. Many fairy painters also made notable illustrations: Maclise illustrated a collection of Irish folk songs and Dadd contributed illustrations to a compendium of British ballads. Sometimes the illustration preceded the text, as was the case with Richard "Dickie" Doyle's

British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world
'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'
