See also: Dada/Surrealism Text from Janis Mink, " Marcel Duchamp, 1887-1968: Art as Anti-Art "The Large Glass is something like a department store window in size, and relates to the changing use of glass and metal in the architecture of the time. However, Duchamp uses it as a non-referential surface upon which some of the isolated components, such as the chocolate grinder and the glider, are shown with painstakingly convincing perspective. One is reminded of the disembodied reality reflected in store windows. Indeed, a note dated 1913 from the White Box deals exclusively with shop windows and ends with the comment, "No obstinacy, ad absurdum, of hiding the coition through a glass pane with one or many objects of the shop window. The penalty consists in cutting the pane and in feeling regret as soon as possession is consummated. Q.E.D." And also, "I. Show case with sliding glass panes - place some FRAGILE objects inside. - Inconvenience-narrowness-reduction of space, i.e. way of being able to experiment in 3 dimensions as one operates on planes in plane geometry." "The bride is made of several parts that supposedly work together like the parts of a motor. The motor runs on self-secreted love gasoline, inspired by Roussel's glass-caged worm, which created music with its metallic secretions. Despite her mechanization, the bride is also called the "arbor-type", recalling the young girl under the trees in Duchamp's painting

I believe that the artist doesn't know what he does. I attach even more importance to the spectator than to the artist. When artist and spectator play a game of chess it is like designing something or constructing a mechanism of some kind. The competitive side of it has no importance. REPLY TO QUESTION - WHAT SATISFIES YOU MOST? Basically, that I've never worked for a living. In 1905, I worked at a printer's in Rouen, passed an examination to be classified as an art worker, served one year in the military as a student officer. Then I was discharged. So I became completely exempt from military service. I left Montmartre in 1908 to go live in Neuilly until 1913. Only the "Large Glass" interested me, ... I wanted to be free of any material obligation, so I began a career as a librarian, which was a sort of excuse for not being obliged to show up socially. ... I knew very well that I would never be able to pass the examination at the school, but I went there as a sort of grip on an intellectual position. At the same time, I was doing my calculations for the "Large Glass". The ideas in the Large Glass are more important than the actual realization.

    MARCEL DUCHAMP Fountain
Perhaps no work is more singularly identified with the transformation of art in the twentieth century than Fountain (1917) by Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). Rejected from an exhibition that was to be open to all works of art sponsored by the Society for Independent Artists in New York, the porcelain urinal was to become the most important and notorious of the "ready-mades," which revolutionized the possibilities for artmaking through their direct use of manufactured consumer products.
Duchamp acquired the lavatory urinal for the original Fountain directly from J. L. Mott Iron Works, a manufacturer of plumbing equipment. Before submitting the piece to the exhibition as sculpture, the artist rotated the urinal ninety degrees from its normal, functional position, and left the piece unimbellished except for the inscription "R. Mutt 1917" (a pseudonym that synthesised the name of the manufacturer and that of the popular comic strip "Mutt and Jeff").
The original Fountain has long since disappeared. In 1964, Duchamp entrusted the Galleria Schwarz in Milan with the production of a signed and numbered edition of his most important ready-mades. Each ready-made was refabricated by a highly exacting craftsperson to exactly replicate the original; the edition for each selection was limited to eight signed examples. The highly esteemed Arturo Schwarz edition of

Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp was born on 28 July 1887, near Blainville, France. In 1904 he joined his artist brothers, Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp Villon , in Paris, where he studied painting at the Académie Julian until 1905. Duchamp's early works were Post-Impressionist in style. He exhibited for the first time in 1909 at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne in Paris. His paintings of 1911 were directly related to Cubism but emphasized successive images of a single body in motion. In 1912 he painted the definitive version of Nude Descending a Staircase ; this was shown at the Salon de la Section d'Or of that same year and subsequently created great controversy at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. Duchamp's radical and iconoclastic ideas predated the founding of the Dada movement in Zurich in 1916. By 1913 he had abandoned traditional painting and drawing for various experimental forms including mechanical drawings, studies, and notations that would be incorporated in a major work, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even
