THE CREATIVE ACT
by M arcel D uchamp
L et us consider two important factors, the two poles of the creation of art: the artist on the one hand, and on the other the spectator who later becomes the posterity. T o all appearances, the artist acts like a mediumistic being who, from the labyrinth beyond time and space, seeks his way out to a clearing. I f we give the attributes of a medium to the artist, we must then deny him the state of consciousness on the esthetic plane about what he is doing or why he is doing it. All his decisions in the artistic execution of the work rest with pure intuition and cannot be translated into a self-analysis, spoken or written, or even thought out. T .S. Eliot, in his essay on "Tradition and Individual Talent", writes: "The more perfect the artist, the more completely separate in him will be the man who suffers and the mind which creates; the more perfectly will the mind digest and transmute the passions which are its material." M illions of artists create; only a few thousands are discussed or accepted by the spectator and many less again are consecrated by posterity. I n the last analysis, the artist may shout from all the rooftops that he is a genius: he will have to wait for the verdict of the spectator in order that his declarations take a social value and that, finally, posterity includes him in the primers of Artist History.

The Rotoreliefs were first shown at opening of the 33rd concours lepine, the salon des inventions, at the parc des expositions, porte de varsailles. Duchamp has taken a tiny stand of three square meters to exhibit Rotorelief. In a joint venture with Henri Pierre Roche, 500 sets of six colored disks have been produced and were designed to be placed on a gramophone. Turningat the certain speed the disk give an impression of depth, Duchamp suggested that the optical illusions becomes more intense when viewed with only one eye.
Situated in alley F, stand number 147, some of the disks were turning horizontally and some vertically. Sandwitched between incinators and a rubbish-compressing machine on the left and an instant vegetable chopper on the right, Duchamps invention, which is awarded an "honorable mention" in the industrial art categoly, goes practically unnoticed by a public whose interest is in a serch for more practical and useful gadgets.
Wall hanging units were later foblicated on the occasion of 1965 Milan reproduction. It consists of a wooden box (37.5 x 37.5 x 8.5 cm) which is covered with black velvet; the motor is behind, in the center of the box, and drives a revolving magnetized turntable which enables one to use, according to the disks to be shown, either one of the two circular magnetised black flames of different width supplied with this unit.
Set of six disks (20cm), which a drawing on each side printed in color by offset lithography, to be seen as they rotate at the speed of 33rpm.

Biography
Marcel Duchamp
Artist France/ USA Born 28 Jul 1887
Died 1 Oct 1968 French-born artist and art theorist who became an American citizen in 1955, the brother of Raymond Duchamp- Villon and Jacques Villon. Although Duchamp produced few works (most of them are now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art), he is regarded as one of the most potent figures in 20th century art because of the originality and fertility of his ideas. He sprang to notoriety with 'Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2' (Philadelphia), combining the principles of Cubism and Futurism, which was the most discussed (and vilified) work at the Armory Show in 1913. In the same year he invented the 'ready-made' with a bicycle wheel mounted on a kitchen stool, and from this time he virtually abandoned painting and other conventional media. From 1915-23 he lived mainly in New York, where he was a leader of the Dada movement. His works of this period include other ready-mades, notably 'Bottle Rack' (1914) and 'Fountain' (a urinal signed R Mutt, 1917). Another of his celebrated provocative gestures was adding a moustache and beard and an obscene inscription to a reproduction of the 'Mona Lisa' (1919).

Biography
French
Duchamp, through his thoughtful use of 'readymades', raised one of the most important questions of 20th century art: what is it, exactly, that removes art from life?
With this question, Duchamp opened the doors to many later art movements.

Artist: DUCHAMP, MARCEL Title: A Life In Pictures Label: ATLAS PRESS (UK) Format: Book Price: Catalog #: ATLAS MC "A colorful, hand-sized gift book, this little introduction to the life and works of Marcel Duchamp was original published to accompany a Duchamp retrospective at the Pompidou Center in Paris. Modeled on a children's book, it contains 12 deliciously deadpan color illustrations of events in Duchamp's life, together with an equally tongue-in-cheek biography. The book's playful appeal belies the scholarly research behind the text and illustrations, all scrupulously accurate down to every detail. The book was much admired on its publication in French (Andy Warhol being an enthusiast, among others); this is its first appearance in English. A must for Duchamp devotees everywhere." A very cute, small hardcover book, 28 pages, with 12 full color illustrations.
Artist: DUCHAMP, MARCEL Title: The Entire Musical Work Label: DOG W/A BONE Format: CD Price: Catalog #: DWAB 01 Music by Marcel Duchamp includes the artist's complete ?uvre, namely 'Erratum Musical' (for three voices), La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires même, 'Erratum Musical' (in two different versions for player piano and chamber ensemble), and the conceptual piece 'Sculpture Musicale' (with a special version performed by John Cage). The liner notes contain reproductions of Duchamp's handwritten scores, as well as photographs of the instrumental 'apparatus' used to create the second version of 'La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires même (a funnel, seven open top cars and six sets of balls)'. Also included is a mesostic (a poem legible both horizontally and vertically) by John Cage."

Blainville,1887-Neuilly,1968 Born on 28 July 1887, in Blainville, near Rouen, France. French painter, poet, experimentator in films and chess player. He is the brother of Raymond Duchamp-Villon, the sculptor, and of Suzanne Duchamp, the poetess and a half brother of Jacques Villon. In 1911 he was a member in the painters' circle known as the "Golden Section", together with La Fresnaye, Léger, Metzinger, Picabia, and others. Influenced by cubism he painted the picture "The Chess Players" and the first studies for his "Nudes descending a Staircase". In the same year he created "The Coffee-Mill", important as regards to form and the part it played in the general development. Many problems of dadaism (mechanical drawings by Picabia, Max Ernst, etc.) and of surrealism were anticipated in it. In 1912 he painted one of his main works, "Nudes descending a Staircase", shown for the first time in October of that year at the exhibition of the "Golden Section". In 1913 it was the hit of the New York "Armory Show".

DUCHAMP, MARCEL BASEL, MUSEE TINGUELY Katalog. Top of Page Home E-Mail Buchhandlungen ... Lieferbedingungen
