Engraved armorial title page., Contemporary vellum binding, slightly stained and warped. Boxed. First edition of Durer's treatise on the fortification of city, castle and marketplace. Although claims have been made for Durer as the first writer on modern fortification, he was certainly preceded by San Gallo, Martini of Siena and Machiavelli, who had presented some general principles on the subject. Durer, did, however provide a link between traditional ideas of the subject and later developments. Durer was the first to describe vaulted chambers for gun placements that were practical, as well as initial ideas on the polygonal system of defence. Many of his ideas were to prove exhaustively expensive, though given the importance of fortification, this was a secondary consideration for those who took up his theories and indeed for the author himself. It was published as a practical work, inspired by the menace of a Turkish invasion. As well as summarising the science of fortification it contains some of Durer's chief architectural work, as many of his ideas were put to use. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Sims Reed Ltd.

Biografía Podremos encontrar a Durero bajo diferentes nombres: Albretch Dürer es su nombre en alemán. Dürer es la derivación de la palabra alemana Tür, que significa "puerta", siendo éste es el significado del apellido de su padre, Albretch Atjós, de origen húngaro, orfebre, quien le dio las primeras clases. También podremos localizar a Durero como Albertus Durerus Noricus. Ésta es la fórmula que el artista utilizó tras su viaje a Venecia a partir del cual decidió adoptar los modos cultos de los renacentistas italianos, que sabían latín y griego en su intento de recuperar la cultura grecorromana de la Antigüedad. Noricus alude a su ciudad de origen, Nüremberg. Alberto Durero es el nombre que se le dio en la Corte española, donde se castellanizó su difícil apellido germánico. Por último, el modo más directo que tendremos de encontrar la marca de Durero será en sus propios cuadros y grabados, donde frecuentemente inscribe su monograma: una elegante A mayúscula que encierra la D de su apellido. Con las dos iniciales construye un símbolo estético y característico, que fue reproducido por aquellos que copiaron sus obras, con ánimo emulador o falsificador.

First edition of Durer's famous treatise on artistic anatomy, containing 142 woodcuts by him showing human figures of varying height and girth in different postures; all with their proper measurements and porportions. This book on human proportions was first published after Durer's death and contains an elegy by his friend Prickheimer. According to Heller: "These proportions are the most extensive work Durer composed and, according to the manuscript in Dresden, it is said to have been his first work, which already had been completed in 1523, but was not issued before his death." Written, designed and illustrated by Durer, this work is notable for its extraordinary series of anthropometrical woodcuts. The first two books deal with the proper proportions of the human form; the third changes the proportions according to mathematical rules, giving examples of extremely fat and thin figures, while the last book depicts the human figure in motion and treats of foreshortennings. Durer's work is the first attempt to apply anthropometry to aesthetics. The woodcuts represent the first attempt to employ cross-hatching to depict shades and shadows in wood engraving.
