James Ensor Old Lady with Masks, 1889

    Oil on canvas,
    54.5 x 46.5 cm
inv. 1969-B The drawing occupies a singular place in the work of James Ensor (1860-1949). Already as a student at the academy ( c. 1880 to 1885), he was an outstanding draughtsman, with a strong fascination with his immediate surroundings. In his drawings, he would study the play of light and the atmosphere around objects and figures in their interiors. He treated the same objects in his paintings. From 1885 onwards, Ensor's work became unusually expressive. The impressions of his surroundings, his fantasies and his studies after older masters and contemporaries all came together in a new series of works that showed an exceptional imagination and great pictorial mastery. For a period of several years, Ensor practically abandoned painting and created his new world nearly exclusively in drawings. Light was still the focus of his attention. However, it was no longer the reflecting light of his Impressionist period, but an indefinable light with an unreal and mystical character. In this period, the figure of Christ became the main theme of Ensor's work: a Christ with whom he identified himself in his perceived role of the outcast, the lonely man in the crowd, but also of the revolutionary. His concentration on drawing and on the figure of Christ eventually led him to create the series The Aureoles of Christ . In 1887, the artist turned back to painting, and in 1888 he painted his masterpiece Christ's Entry into Brussels, in which he further elaborated the themes of The Aureoles.

    Painter
    Born: Oostende 13-04-1860
Died: Oostende 19-11-1949 Ensor is one of the most important representatives of symbolism in Flanders. He’s one of the biggest figures referring to modern art. He started painting under the influence of the impressionists but developed afterwards a very specific and personal style: p ortraying individuals as clowns or skeletons or replacing their faces with carnival masks, he represented humanity as stupid, smirking, vain, and loathsome. Famous pieces of work are ’ Het zelfportret De intocht van Christus in Brussel

Free trade could be fair - if those preaching it were also practising it.

Posted 15/11/02 Sign up here for free email updates! The experience of developing countries exposes the gap between free trade rhetoric of the United States and European Union and the harsh realities of the rigged rules and double standards that dominate American and European international trade policies and practices. The potential of increased international trade to reduce poverty in the developing world is being lost because the rules that govern that trade are rigged in favour of richer countries.
