Henry Fuseli. Titania Awakening
Oil on canvas, 87 x 110 inches. Kuntzmuseum, Winterthur. The source is A Midsummer Night's Dream , Act IV, scene i. Titania awakes and says, "My Oberon, what visions I have seen! / Methough I was enamored of an ass." Oberon points to Bottom, sleeping beside her. Like its companion, Titania and Bottom , this painting is busy with detail and invites the viewer to interpret the various figures. Titania Awakening also divides into two contrasting parts. On the right are Oberon and Titania, bathed in light; standing between them is a fairy with the herb, "love-in-idleness," that breaks the spell cast by Puck. Surrounding the two are a group of laughing and dancing fairies, accompanied by an elf playing the bagpipe. On the left, however, we find the shadowed figure of Bottom, with some kind of cloaked and hooded creature crawling from between his legs. The ass's head is held above him by a fairy, and just above his head in Queen Mab and her steed. The allusion is to Romeo and Juliet (I, iv) when Mercutio describes Queen Mab as "the fairies' midwife" who is drawn "Over men's noses as they lie asleep." She gallops by night "Through lovers' brains, and then they dream of love." At Bottom's left arm, to complete the sinister aspects of this half of the painting, are a group of witches, one of them clutching to her breast a baby demon. Here Fuseli depicts, as he did in

(Zurich, 1741 – Londres, 1825).

Painter, poet, critic, and teacher, Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) is one of the most idiosyncratic and original figures in the history of British art. His life and work have always fueled speculation, gossip, and fantasyfrom the rumors of his opium addiction and predilection for eating raw pork to the wildly differing modern assessments of his art. Art historians view him variously as a prime exponent of Neoclassicism, a Romantic before his time, or an aberrant individualist foreshadowing the innovations of Surrealism. This book reinterprets Fuseli by locating him in a period of traumatic social, cultural, and political revolution. Thematic chapters explore the successive phases of his career. They move from his early work in London and Rome, through his innovative exploitation of London's new public spaces for displaying art, to his old agea period of great professional success when he profoundly influenced a whole generation of younger British artists. A vivid image of the artist emerges, revealing Fuseli as a seminal figure in the development of modern art. Martin Myrone is a Curator at Tate Britain, specializing in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British art. His publications include

http://members.tripod.com/abrax7/fuseli-txt.htm
HENRY FUSELI – Artist of Nightmare An artist of the early Romantic period, who absorbed such ideas and assiduously cultivated fear, was the Swiss-born Henry Fuseli. He chose subjects like Satan bridging Chaos, a Shepherd's Dream, Fairies from Shakespeare and Hamlet's Ghost. Benjamin Haydon (1853) praised the latter as "the finest conception of a ghost there ever was painted... There it quivered with martial stride, pointing to a place of meeting with Hamlet; and round its visored head was a halo of light that looked sulphurous, and made one feel as if one actually smelt hell, burning, cindery, and suffocating. The dim moon glittered behind; the sea roared in the distance, as if agitated by the presence of a supernatural spirit; and the ghost looked at Hamlet, with eyes that glared like the light in the eyes of lion, which is savagely growling over his bloody food." Fuseli, unlike his compositions, was not impressive to look at. What Haydon saw was "a little white-headed lion-faced man in an old flannel dressing-gown tied around his waist with a piece of rope and upon his head the bottom of Mrs Fuseli's work-basket." Today his most-reproduced work is The Nightmare (1782) which was painted after he had dreamed that he had made love to his unrequited sweetheart. It shows a young woman sleeping, her breast and legs dramatically thrust upwards, and the head of a phantom horse, with icy wisps of mane, rising above the bed. Perched on the woman's breast is a small hairy devil, impishly sinister. The horses's eyes bulge and its neck seems to strain to burst through the rent in the curtains and take possession of the world of shapes and solids. Rendered in apparitional whites and dusky-browns, it is a shudderingly effective visual landmark.

Fuseli, Henry
Fuseli, Henry (Johann Heinrich FÝssli) (1741-1825). Swiss-born painter, draughtsman, and writer on art, active mainly in England, where he was one of the outstanding figures of the Romantic movement. He was the son of a portrait painter, Johann Caspar FÝssli (1707-82), but he originally trained as a priest; he took holy orders in 1761, but never practised. In 1765 he came to London at the suggestion of the British Ambassador in Berlin, who had been impressed by his drawings. Reynolds encouraged him to tape up painting, and he spent the years 1770-78 in Italy, engrossed in the study of Michelangelo , whose elevated style he sought to emulate for the rest of his life. On his return he exhibited highly imaginative works such as The Nightmare (Detroit Institute of Arts, 1781), the picture that secured his reputation when it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1782 (there is another version in the Goethe-museum, Frankfurt). An unforgettable image of a woman in the throes of a violently erotic dream, this painting shows how far ahead of his time Fuseli was in exploring the murky areas of the psyche where sex and fear meet. His fascination with the horrifying and fastastic also comes out in many of his literary subjects, which formed a major part of his output; he painted several works for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, and in 1799 he followed this example by opening a Milton Gallery in Pall Mall with an exhibition of forty-seven of his own paintings. Fusely was a much respected and influential figure in his lifetime, but his work was generally neglected for about a century after his death until the

    Henry Fuseli
English painter and writer on art, of German-Swiss family, was born at Zurich in Switzerland on the 7th of February 1741; he himself asserted in 1745, but this appears to have been a mere whim. He was the second child in a family of eighteen. His father was John Caspar Füssli, of some note as a painter of portraits and landscapes, and author of Lives of the Helvetic Painters. This parent destined his son for the church, and with this view sent him to the Caroline college of his native town, where he received an excellent classical education. One of his schoolmates there was Lavater, with whom he formed an intimate friendship.
After taking orders in 1761 Fuseli was obliged to leave his country for a while in consequence of having aided Lavater to expose an unjust magistrate, whose family was still powerful enough to make its vengeance felt. He first travelled through Germany, and then, in 1765, visited England, where he supported himself for some time by miscellaneous writing; there was a sort of project of promoting through his means a regular literary communication between England and Germany. He became in course of time acquainted with Sir Joshua Reynolds, to whom he showed his drawings. By Sir Joshua's advice he then devoted himself wholly to art. Fuseli made an art-pilgrimage to Italy, where he remained till 1778, changing his name from Füssli to Fuseli, as more Italian-sounding. Early in 1779 he returned to England, taking Zurich on his way. He found a commission awaiting him from Alderman Boydell, who was then organizing his celebrated

National Gallery of Victoria Illustration to King Henry VIII , Act IV. Shortly before her death Queen Katherine falls asleep in the presence of her usher and her maid. She has a vision of six personages in white, bearing floral garlands, who dance about her. As the last disappears she wakes up. This is the moment depicted here. Fuseli had been commissioned late in 1802 to illustrate Chalmers's Shakespeare and the set of volumes was issued in 1804-5. This engraving, and one other, were the last two made by Blake for Fuseli.
