Thomas Gainsborough
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Blue boy , painted 1770
by Thomas Gainsborough Thomas Gainsborough ) was one of the most famous portrait and landscape painters of 18th-century England He was born on 14 May 1727 in Sudbury Suffolk England . As a painter, he lived and worked in Sudbury, Ipswich Bath and London . With Richard Wilson , he was one of the originators of the eighteenth-century British landscape school, and, with rival Joshua Reynolds , he was the dominant English portraitist of the second half of the 18th century . Gainsborough painted more from his observations of nature than from any application of formal rules. The poetic sensibility of his paintings caused Constable to say, "On looking at them, we find tears in our eyes and know not what brings them." He himself said, "I'm sick of Portraits, and wish very much to take my viol-da-gam and walk off to some sweet village, where I can paint landskips and enjoy the fag end of life in quietness and ease." His best works, such as

Gainsborough, Thomas
Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88). English painter of portraits, landscapes, and fancy pictures, one of the most individual geniuses in British art. He was born at Sudbury, Soffolk, and went to London in about 1740, probably studying with the French engraver Gravelot. He returned to Sudbury in 1748 and in 1752 he set up as a portrait painter at Ipswitch. His work at this time consisted mainly of heads and half-length, but he also painted some small portrait groups in landscape settings which are the most lyrical of all English conversation pieces ( Heneage Lloyd and his Sister , Fitzwilliam, Cambridge). His patrons were the merchants of the town and the neighboring squires, but when in 1759 he moved to Bath, his new sitters were members of Society, and he developed a free and elegant mode of painting seen at its most characteristic in full-length portraits ( Mary, Countess Howe , Kenwood House, London, c.1763-64). In 1768 he was elected a foundation member of the Royal Academy, and in 1774 he moved permanently to London. Here he further developed the personal style he had evolved at Bath, working with light and rapid brush-strokes and delicate and evanescent colors. He became a favorite painter of the Royal Family, even though his rival Reynolds was appointed King's Principal Painter. Gainsborough sometimes said that while portraiture was his profession landscape painting was his pleasure, and he continued to paint landscapes long after he had left a country neighborhood. He produced many landscape drawings, some in pencil, some in charcoal and chalk, and he occasionally made drawings which he varnished. He also, in later years, painted fancy pictures of pastoral subjects (

GAINSBOROUGH, THOMAS
GAINESVILLE (FLA.) GAINESVILLE (TEX.) GAINSBOROUGH, THOMAS (1727—1788), English painter, one of the greatest masters of the English school in portraiture, and only less so in landscape, was born at Sudbury, Suffolk, in the spring of 1727. His father, who carried on the business of a woollen crape-maker in that town, was of a respectable character and family, and was noted for his skill in fencing; his mother excelled in flower-painting, and encouraged her son in the use of the pencil. There were nine childrenof the marriage, two of the painter’s brothers being of a very ingenious turn. (or, as some say, a malignant wen) which proved fatal on the 2nd of August of the same year. He lies buried at Kew. Gainsborough and Reynolds rank side by side as the greatest portrait-painters of the English school. They were at variance; but Gainsborough on his death-bed sought and obtained a reconciliation. It is difficult to say which stands the higher of the two, although Reynolds may claim to have worked with a nearer approach to even and demonstrable excellence. In grace, spirit, and lightness of insight and of touch, Gainsborough is peculiarly eminent. His handling was slight for the mos,t part, and somewhat arbitrary, but in a high degree masterly; and his landscapes and rustic compositions are not less gifted than his portraits. Among his finest works are portraits of “Lady Ligonier,” “ Georgiana, duchess of Devonshire,” ‘ “ Master B uttall (the Blue Boy),” now in Grosvenor House,” Mrs Sheridan and Mrs Tickell,” “ Orpiii, the parish clerk “(National Gallery)

Thomas Gainsborough, the son of a schoolteacher, was born in Sudbury in 1727. As a child he copied famous paintings and at fourteen was sent to London where he trained under Hubert Gravelot.
In 1745 Gainsborough married Margaret Burr, the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Beaufort, and established himself as a painter at Ipswich. He developed the subject-matter of small portra it groups, set in a realistic landscape. His most famous painting of this period is Mr and Mrs Andrews
In 1774 Gainsborough moved to London where he became a foundation member of the Royal Academy . However, had several disagreements with the Academy about the selection of his paintings and refused to exhibit there after 1784.
