Gauguin, (Eugène-Henri-) Paul
The White Horse
1898; Louvre, Paris Although Gauguin was settled in Tahiti when he painted this superb picture, it does not primarily suggest a local connection but rather a final outcome of the sense of newly tapped powers in color and new sensations to be derived from it that had been the preoccupation of a whole half-century. The seed of Impressionism , it might be said, expanded here into a marvellous exotic bloom. The color, however, is no longer descriptive or atmospheric but makes an impact on the senses akin to that of music. The white horse itself suggests some creature of heroic fable, yet while it shares this appearance of belonging to an imaginary world with the riders in the background, the picture had its basis in Polynesian reality. The inhabitants used horses as a means of transport in the absence of roads and bridges. Bengt Danielsson, the anthropologist and historian, in his book Gauguin in the South Seas , makes this remark with special reference to the Marquesas where `everyone still rides a horse from the bishop down to the smallest native boy'. Gauguin did not move to the Marquesas until 1901 but as this picture shows the native horsemanship had already caught his attention. © 19 Sep 2002

Gauguin, (Eugène-Henri-) Paul (b. June 7, 1848, Paris, Fr.d. May 8, 1903, Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia), one of the leading French painters of the Postimpressionist period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th-century art. After spending a short period with Vincent van Gogh in Arles (1888), Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through colour. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. His masterpieces include the early Vision After the Sermon (1888) and Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Although his main achievements were to lie elsewhere, Gauguin was, to use a fanciful metaphor, nursed in the bosom of Impressionism . His attitudes to art were deeply influenced by his experience of its first exhibition, and he himself participated in those of 1880, 1881 and 1882. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian Creole, whose mother had been a writer and a follower of Saint-Simon, he was brought up in Lima, joined the merchant navy in 1865, and in 1872 began a successful career as a stockbroker in Paris. In 1874 he saw the first Impressionist exhibition, which completely entranced him and confirmed his desire to become a painter. He spent some 17,000 francs on works by

document.write(''); Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam Art Institute of Chicago Strange Bedfellows A new exhibition tracks the turbulent nine weeks that artists Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin lived and painted together in the South of France "In general, Vincent and I do not see eye to eye, especially as regards painting," Paul Gauguin wrote to a friend in 1888. "He is a romantic and I am rather inclined to a primitive state." The tense friendship and unspoken rivalry between these two great avant-garde artists, and the creative sparks that flew between them during the two months in 1888 they spent living and working together in van Gogh's little Yellow House in the Provençal town of Arles, produced works that helped set the stage for much of what we know today as modern art. The mutual influence and interaction between these two opinionated artists are the focus of a stunning and comprehensive new exhibition organized jointly by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. "Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South" (which is on view at the Art Institute through January 13, 2002, before traveling to the Van Gogh Museum in February) features many of the key pictures upon which these two artists' reputations rest, including van Gogh's The Bedroom and several versions of his Sunflowers , along with Gauguin's Human Miseries and Vision of the Sermon . The curators of the show have pieced together an almost day-to-day picture of the pair's collaboration, documenting their subjects, their styles, and the paintings they worked on side by side. "It's exciting," says Louis van Tilborgh, curator of paintings and sculpture at the Van Gogh Museum, "because this gives us a chance to see these two treating the same subjects at virtually the same time."

Paul Gauguin
Self-portrait with the Yellow Christ Paul Gauguin began to paint late, at 25 years of age, but painting became all his life. For painting he left his wife and children and quit his profitable post of clerk. Gauguin was full of inner contradictions and complicated in his behaviour. His life was filled with arduous work, militant commitments at the expense of his friends, chimerical dreaming, short-lived happiness, the painful and glorious satisfaction of a man who knows that he has defined his own freedom, that he is animated by a spirit that cannot be taken from him. In quest for different life Gauguin went in 1891 to Tahiti. He spent there his last years, which were both very difficult and very happy. From this period of his life descend artist's most famous works. Paul Gauguin was the Post-Impressionist, but his simple brushwork and intensely contrastive colours largely retain the Impressionist approach to three-dimensionality through shadow, patches of light and an extensive use of green.

was born on June 7, 1848 in Paris. Gauguin is considered one of the leading painters of the Postimpressionist period. In 1849 his jounalist father's political activities forced the family into exile. The Gauguin family set off for Peru. His father died during the crossing from France. Gauguin's mother, of Peruvian descent on her mother's side, and her two children moved in with a great grand uncle and his family in Lima. At the age of 17 Gauguin joined the French merchant navy, travelling around the world for six years. After the death of his mother in 1867, he settled down with his wealthy guardian, Gustave Arosa, who had a large art collection that included works by Delacroix. This period in time shaped Gauguin's interest in the arts. He started collecting Impressionist paintings, and became an amateur painter. Gauguin began his career as a stockbroker in Paris in 1872. He attended the Impressionist's first exhibition in 1874, and was captivated by the impressionist style. He purchased works by
