Somehow, articulating here the content of that painting when the image is so close at hand seems a little redundant. So perhaps it is better to consider Van Gogh in the context of a young man, an avid reader of popular astronomy, who is genuinely fascinated and absorbed by the concept of traveling through and among the stars. He said in a number of contexts that death would be the preferred mode of travel there. Perhaps rather than reading a few extra paragraphs here, you would well advised to view the painting again, because it is important that despite another century of science, we still accept that a few strokes of color add up to the vastness of the night sky. Although almost wholly unknown during his brief lifetime, the painter Vincent Willem van Gogh is today probably the most widely known and appreciated representative of postimpressionism. His work became an important bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries; it was particularly influential in the evolution of both fauvism and German expressionism.
Van Gogh clearly showed marked artistic talent even as a child, but neither he nor his family (his father was a Dutch clergyman) imagined that painting would become his career. Instead, at the age of 16, he went to work for Goupil and Company, an art gallery with which one of his uncles had long been associated; he was dismissed in 1876. Other false starts included a job in a Dordrecht bookstore during the spring of 1877, theological studies at the University of Amsterdam, and, from November 1878 to July 1879, service as a lay missionary in a coal-mining district in Belgium.
In 1880, Vincent chose art as a vocation and became dependent on his brother for money. Indeed, for the next 10 years Theo, who had also gone to work for Goupil, sent an allowance to Vincent, encouraged him to work, and wrote regularly. Vincent's thinking during his short but prolific career (approximately 750 paintings, 1,600 drawings, 9 lithographs, and 1 etching) is well documented in more than 700 letters that he wrote to Theo and others.

Gogh, Vincent (Willem) van (b. March 30, 1853, Zundert, Neth.d. July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris), generally considered the greatest Dutch painter and draughtsman after Rembrandt . With Cézanne and Gauguin the greatest of Post-Impressionist artists. He powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. 1885 (180 Kb); Oil on canvas, 81.5 x 114.5 cm; Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, Amsterdam
From 1881 to 1885 van Gogh lived in the Netherlands, sometimes in lodgings, supported by his devoted brother Theo, who regularly sent him money from his own small salary. In keeping with his humanitarian outlook he painted peasants and workers, the most famous picture from this period being The Potato Eaters (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; 1885). Of this he wrote to Theo: `I have tried to emphasize that those people, eating their potatoes in the lamp-light have dug the earth with those very hands they put in the dish, and so it speaks of manual labour, and how they have honestly earned their food'. In 1885 van Gogh moved to Antwerp on the advice of Antoine Mauve (a cousin by marriage), and studied for some months at the Academy there. Academic instruction had little to offer such an individualist, however, and in February 1886 he moved to Paris, where he met

    Letter W11

16 June 1889 The biography below is by no means a complete and comprehensive exploration of the life of Vincent van Gogh. Instead, it's merely an overview of some of the important events in the chronicle of Van Gogh's life. In my "Books" section I have a page devoted specifically to Van Gogh biographies and there I recommend some of the best. First and foremost among these is Jan Hulsker's Vincent and Theo Van Gogh: A Dual Biography highly recommended For a chronological summary of Van Gogh's life, please refer to the Chronology section. Early Years Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot Zundert, The Netherlands on 30 March 1853. Van Gogh's birth came one year to the day after his mother gave birth to a first, stillborn childalso named Vincent. There has been much speculation about Vincent van Gogh suffering later psychological trauma as a result of being a "replacement child" and having a deceased brother with the same name and same birth date. This theory remains unsubstantiated, however, and there is no actual historical evidence to support it. Van Gogh was the son of Theodorus van Gogh (1822-85), a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus (1819-1907). Unfortunately there is virtually no information about Vincent van Gogh's first ten years. Van Gogh attended a boarding school in Zevenbergen for two years and then went on to attend the King Willem II secondary school in Tilburg for two more. At that time, in 1868, Van Gogh left his studies at the age of 15 and never returned.

    Vincent van Gogh
Self-portrait The history of Impressionism would not be complete without the distinctive work of Vincent van Gogh. Paintings of this world famous artist are at the top of today's art price range. He began from drawing and painting dark realistic scenes, but after meeting Impressionists he employed their motifs, bright colours and style of painting. Van Gogh's life was afflicted with mental trouble. His short period of artistic co-operation with Gauguin ended with van Gogh's symbolic act of self-mutilation: he cut off an earlobe. Although most of his last months van Gogh spent under psychiatric treatment, paintings from this period brought him the greatest fame. Van Gogh's work became a basic influence on the development of the Fauvism and Expressionism.

    Gogh, Vincent van: Self-Portraits
In the most limited definition of the term, Impressionism as the objective study of light did not encourage so essentially a subjective study as the self-portrait but in the later expansion of the movement this self-representation was given renewed force by Cézanne and van Gogh. The latter has often been compared with Rembrandt in the number and expressiveness of his self-portraits but while Rembrandt's were distributed through a lifetime, van Gogh produced some thirty in all in the short space of five years - from the end of the Brabant period (1885) to the last year of his life at St Rémy and Auvers. In each there is the same extraordinary intensity of expression concentrated in the eyes but otherwise there is a considerable variety. From the Paris period onwards he used different adaptations of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist brushwork, separate patches of colour being applied with varying thickness and direction in a way that makes each painting a fresh experience.
