BEGINNINGS, 16" x 20", Oil on canvas (1997)
"A streak of light hits the water from afar, as lilies continue to surround a clear pond. A crowd cheers as we enter a new beginning. A painting dedicated to my wedding."
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1969. Raqs is the youngest in the family of five children. She graduated in 1991 at the College of the Holy Spirit (Manila) with a degree of Fine Arts major in Advertising. In the same year, she already gained international exposure when she sold handpainted shirts during the Southeast Asian Games. "MADRUGADA Artists". Being pioneer of the group, Raqs was able to exhibit her early paintings at the City Gallery in 1993 & 1995. During this time she also attended workshops at the Ayala Museum. Madrugada, a tradition in Spain, is a time Spaniards call their own, a time to be themselves, to live their lives as they wish. By adopting this Spanish custom, Raqs developed her skills thru the use of various mediums such as soft pastel, gouache, acrylic and oil paint. In October of 1999, Raqs opened her first one-woman show entitled "Incidental Flowers". An exhibit of 25 paintings from Raqs' collection depicting her love for flowers in nature and still life. Rendered in soft pastel and acrylic with brisk strokes of blue, yellow and green, the Monet- and Van Gogh-inspired paintings create a vivid impression of country life, evoking a keen appreciation for the simple and the ordinary.

General information How to get there Address Admission prices ... News General information The Kröller-Müller Museum houses a world famous collection of fine art, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The focal points of the museum are the extensive range of works by Vincent van Gogh and the sculpture garden. A magnificent amalgamation of art, architecture and nature. The Kröller-Müller Museum owes its existence to Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939), the daughter of a German industrialist. In 1888 she married the Dutchman, Anton Kröller, who succeeded her father as the manager of his business. With her husband's support, Helene Kröller-Müller built up a large collection of fine art. By 1935, her collection had grown large enough in its own right to fill a gallery. She decided to transfer ownership to the Netherlands State, who had a museum constructed for the collection in the Hoge Veluwe National Park. This museum, designed by Henry van de Velde, was opened in 1938. In 1961 the museum was enhanced by a sculpture garden, followed in 1977 by a new wing designed by Wim Quist. Sculpture from the late 19th and 20th century occupies an important place in the Kröller-Müller Museum.

Genius Ignored , Chapter 7: Van Gogh [Summary: Van Gogh was an indiputable genius, utterly, indisputably ignored. He created hundreds of bold, brilliant paintings; only one was sold during his lifetime.] It's entirely possible that if Van Gogh had never lived this book would never have been written. Not that these other artists wouldn't have been just as great and just as ignored, but the concept might have been kind of fuzzy. Van Gogh brings it into focus: an indisputable genius, utterly, indisputably ignored. No repetition inures us; we are freshly shocked and amazed. After having failed as an art dealer and a Protestant evangelist, Van Gogh decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. He received a smattering of formal education, but mostly, with singular feverishness and dedication, studied and practiced on his own. In his 33rd year he moved to Paris, blossoming into a brilliant colorist. Two years later he moved south to Arles, producing bold, bright paintings and drawings at a miraculous rate. He started suffering bouts of insanity. He moved north to Auvers, near Paris, continuing to paint wonderfully. He killed himself at the age of 37. He and his brother Theo who had supported him financially and emotionally throughout his career had been able to sell only one painting while he was still alive.

VINCENT
By Don Mclean
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul...
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land. Now I understand What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they did not know how - Perhaps they'll listen now. Starry, starry night Flaming flowers that brightly blaze Swirling clouds in violet haze Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue Colors changing hue Morning fields of amber grain Weathered faces lined in pain Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand. Now I understand What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they did not know how Perhaps they'll listen now. For they could not love you But still, your love was true

In a single decade, between his twenty-seventh and thirty-seventh years, Dutch-born Vincent van Gogh created one of the most important legacies of painting ever to enrich the world. His striking use of colormuch of it pure color, and thick-layeredexalted and even immortalized what he chose to depict: cypresses, orchards, wheat fields, and swirling clouds all ablaze under the scalding sun of Provence; a cafe in Arles crowned by a star-dappled evening sky; sunflowers and oleanders almost palpable in their brilliance; and the hardworking peasants of the Low Countries and France, for whom he had a deep, almost religious feeling.
