Head of a Young Girl c.1895 Charcoal scetch for Alleluia Thomas Cooper Gotch, RI, 1854 -1931 Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, Gotch came from a distinguished non-conformist family. In 1876 he left his father's business and started his training as an artist. He entered the Slade in 1879 and became close friends with Henry Scott Tuke. In 1881 he married Caroline Burland Yates and returned to Paris with her to study at Laurens' academy. Stanhope Forbes first met the Gotches in 1885, although they were not resident in Newlyn until 1891. In that same year the Gotches wintered in Florence, marking a change in his style of painting with a 'joyous sense of colour' that he experienced while there. Many of his works are said to bear a resemblance to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Probably his most famous work is "Alleluia" 1896 (Tate Gallery, London). Click to open Frames Version

PAINTING IN WEST CORNWALL For at least two centuries, the light and landscape of Cornwall has attracted artists. Early visitors included J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851), Joseph Farington (1747-1821), Samuel Prout and William Brooks , while home-grown artists included the "Cornish Wonder" John Opie (1761-1807), as well as less well known painters such as Richard T. Pentreath (1806-1869) and John Henry Martin (1835-1908). The majority of the works produced by these painters were landscapes and seascapes, with very few genre works which were the hallmark of the later Newlyn artists The single most painted scene in Cornwall is almost certainly the enchanting landmark of St. Michael's Mount, situated in Mount's Bay, in the far west of the county. Artists have been capturing its qualities in every conceivable aspect, lit by brilliant sunshine or thrashed by raging storms, for many centuries. As well as St Michael's Mount, west Cornwall boasts two famous fishing ports whose names have become synonymous with two eras of British painting - Newlyn and St. Ives. Separated by the neck of the Penwith peninsula, Newlyn lies on the South coast of the peninsula, with St Ives some seven miles away on the North coast.

Victorian Art in Britain Thomas Cooper Gotch Gotch was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire to a prosperous middle class family involved in making shoes and banking. The family were nonconformists. He attended school locally, and entered his father’s business, before taking up the study of art at Heatherley’s Art School in 1876. He then studied briefly in Antwerp, before progressing to the Slade. He married a fellow student Caroline Yates, whom he met in Paris. They had one daughter Phyllis, who was a model in some of her father’s most important pictures. The young family travelled to Australia, where they settled in Melbourne. They returned to England, settling in the artistic colony of Newlyn in 1887. Gotch and his wife lived in Newlyn for the rest of their lives. He painted in the style of the Newlyn School at this time. Thomas Cooper Gotch died suddenly on 1 st May 1931. The reputation of the artist, and the recognition of his work is long overdue for a positive re-assessment.
