ABSTRACT Background Familial hypercholesterolemia leads to premature ischemic heart disease and is often caused by mutations in the gene for the low-density lipoprotein receptor. Mutations in the apolipoprotein B gene, which encodes a ligand for this receptor, may also result in this phenotype. Methods We studied the genotypes of 9255 women and men from the general population, 948 patients with ischemic heart disease, and 36 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, all from Denmark, for three mutations in the apolipoprotein B gene: Arg3500Gln, Arg3531Cys, and Arg3500Trp.

Abstract
Title: Global MHD Simulations of Jupiter's Magnetosphere and Ionosphere
for Cassini-Galileo Conditions Authors: K. C. Hansen, Michael Combi, Tamas Gombosi, Darren De Zeeuw, Kenneth Powell, Aaron Ridley
The magnetosphere of Jupiter during the time period of the Cassini
flyby is modeled using a 3D global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code. The
simulation includes the entire magnetosphere down to 3 $R_J$ and
include the following non-MHD physics to better represent the
environment: (1) mass loading due to the Io torus, (2) a parameterized
super-thermal particle pressure and (3) an ionospheric model as an
inner boundary condition. Upstream conditions are set using Cassini
data. We examine bow shock and magnetopause crossings by Cassini and
Galileo and find that the model correctly predicts measured crossings. We further find that the nearly simultaneous magnetopause crossings for Galileo and Cassini on 10 Jan 2001 could not have resulted from a steady state magnetosphere. We show that the inflated state of the

Application of a polythermal ice sheet model to the Antarctic Ice Sheet: Steady-state solution and response to Milankovic cycles
I. HANSEN, R. GREVE and K. HUTTER Abstract Several computations with the authors' three-dimensional polythermal ice sheet model SICOPOLIS are performed for the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The distinctive feature of this model is the detailed consideration of the basal temperate ice layer, in which the water content and its impact on the ice viscosity are computed; its transition surface to the cold ice region is treated by accounting for the continuum-mechanical jump conditions that hold on this interface. The presented simulations cover two types of scenarios, namely (i) a steady-state simulation under present climate conditions, and (ii) sinusoidal Milankovic-period forcing with the three Milankovic periods of 20, 40 and 100 thousand years, respectively. Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Thermal Engineering and Sciences for Cold Regions (ed. Y. Lee and W. Hallett), 89-96 (1996).

If space changes all - the small-scale epidemiology of the fox tapeworm F. Hansen, K. Tackmann, F. Jeltsch, C. Staubach, H.-H. Thulke This paper is part of a combined field and modelling work on the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. The parasite causes one of the most dangerous zoonosis in Europe. For successful control, an understanding of the epidemiological situation of the parasite and its distribution in space and time is required.
A marked pattern was found by several authors: the ratio of prevalence estimates in voles and foxes (intermediate vs. definite host) is amazingly small. Thinking in terms of the common ‘contact probability’ concept suggests an unstable parasitic cycle which is in contradiction to the long-term persistent endemic foci observed in the field (Tackmann et al., 1998).
Our simulation model includes spatial aspects of parasite transmission and thus exceeds the classical non-spatial modelling approach. The specific processes in the Echinococcus cycle are modelled spatially explicit and linked to the observed prevalence ratio. For environments that are patchy from the parasite’s point of view we are now able to provide a plausible scenario for how ‘so few’ infected voles can guarantee ‘so many’ foxes to be infected: the parasite occurs spatially clumped within the vole population. This most likely is caused by variable survival conditions for the worm eggs.
We have validated THE MODEL for this parasitic cycle by the comparison of field and simulation results under the control strategy applied in the eradication trial in Germany. The resulting control outcome was compared to strategies derived from the implications of our model. The control effect could be greatly improved by the use of model-based control strategies. The characteristics of the improved strategies are discussed in relation to the spatio-temporal features of the fox tapeworm cycle.

http://www.oesa.ufz.de/hans/gfoe_98.html
The fox tapeworm: modeling a parasite-host system, an ecological approach. [in German] Frank Hansen, Florian Jeltsch, Kirsten Tackmann, Christoph Staubach, Uli Löschner, Hans-Hermann Thulke The fox tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) is a parasite of fox with mice serving as intermediate hosts. In endemic areas, prevalences in foxes extend 50% while normally less than 1% of mice are infected.
The presented simulation model includes special traits of the predator-prey relationship between foxes and mice as well as spatial aspects in the distribution of the various stages of the tapeworm. From this level of resolution we calculate the same infection probabilities that are used in the differential equation model and thus are able to compare the results of the two different approaches.
Only for few combinations of infection probabilities the non-spatial differential equation model reproduces the observed prevalences. With small variations in population parameters of hosts or parasite that are to be expected in natural populations the homogeneous approach produces prevalence ratios different from those found in the field. The feeding behavior of foxes, which is responsible for their infection, again leads to deviation from observed prevalences.
The consideration of spatial heterogeneity considerably enhances the stability of the parasite-host-cycle against changes of population parameters. Consequently, natural feeding behavior of foxes no longer is crucial for the overall result. We therefore conclude that it is necessary to take into account spatial differences in infection probabilities in both intermediate and definite host to achieve a better understanding of this special host-parasite cycle. This can be done with the help of the presented simulation model.
