New York, Coe Kerr Gallery, American Impressionism , November 7-
December 7, 1985, fig. 20, illustrated After establishing himself in Boston as a painter of urban life, Hassam sailed for Europe late in 1886 with his new wife, Maude Doane. The Hassams took up residence in Paris, and during the next several years Hassam's exposure to the work of the French Impressionists was evidenced in his brightened palette and broken brushwork. He concentrated on the urban life of Paris, carefully rendering the streets, architecture, and local denizens, all seen with the optimism and euphemism that was the prevailing artistic perspective. His canvases were exhibited and honored at the Paris Salon during these years, and extant works from his French period (1887-1889) were his most inspired. He was influenced by the reigning French Impressionists, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley, incorporating their brushwork and palette into his already developed Impressionist techniques.

88. Treasures To Go: Artist Biography
childe hassam 1859–1935. (Frederick) childe hassam was born in Dorchester,Massachusetts, at that time an affluent suburb of Boston.
http://nmaa-ryder.si.edu/treasures/bios/02112.html
Childe Hassam
Before his departure for Europe he had already attracted attention and displayed his considerable skills with a number of paintings of Dorchester streets. These were freely brushed, tonalist works, poetic depictions of evening light reflected on rain-soaked pavement, with dramatic use of perspective. But Hassam emerged from his stay in Paris profoundly influenced by the techniques and sensibilities of the impressionist movement. It lightened his palette, encouraged use of the broken brush stroke and the juxtaposition of contrasting hues, and moved him in the direction of becoming the most assertively impressionist of American painters. But unlike many of his French contemporaries, the American insistence on form and contour prevailed in his work. Ironically, Hassam never openly acknowledged his indebtedness to the impressionists, insisting that his artistic lineage descended from Constable, Turner, and Bonington. On his return to America he settled in New York, where he became a close associate of J. Alden Weir and John Twachtman. Eventually, Weir and Twachtman both purchased rural properties in coastal Connecticut and used their homes as focus for much of their painting. Hassam, however, remained peripatetic, coursing up and down the New England coast, painting what struck his fancy, from Old Lyme, Connecticut, to the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire. In Old Lyme he frequented the boarding house of Florence Griswold, now a museum of the paintings of other young impressionists who boarded there. And there he painted some of his most charming and redolent depictions of the churches, homes, and tree-lined streets of an old New England village.

He arrived home in Boston in 1898, and there joined with Julian Alden Weir and John H. Twachtman in founding the Ten American Painters, a group of advanced painters who had all been exposed to French Impressionism. The Ten, as they were known, launched a series of important exhibitions, which were highly influential at the turn of the century, introducing certain tenets of Impressionism to a broader viewing public.
Hassam also exhibited his work frequently in annual exhibitions in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, including the Armory Show in 1913. His best-known works are based on themes of exquisitely-dressed young women, rainy or snow-covered city streets, flag-lined avenues, sea-side gardens, sun-drenched seascapes, and harbor scenes.
Hassam mastered a wide range of media, including oil, pastel, lithography, etching, and watercolor. Hassam's watercolors show great spontaneity, freshness, and originality. In this medium, Hassam's use of color is so bold and free, that, at times, it is released from its descriptive function, and appears to take on a life of its own.
