    Biography
    William Hogarth
Artist England Born 10 Nov 1697
    Died 25 Oct 1764
Hogarth was far and away the most important British artist of his generation. He was equally outstanding as a painter and engraver and by the force of his pugnacious personality as well as by the quality and originality of his work he freed British art from its domination by foreign artists. Because so much of his work has a 'literary' element, his qualities as a painter have often been overlooked, but his more informal pictures in particular show that his brushwork could live up to his inventive genius. The vigour and spontaneity of 'The Shrimp Girl' (National Gallery, London, c1740), for example, have made it deservedly one of the most popular British paintings of the 18th century.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Hogarth, William English painter and engraver. He produced portraits and moralizing genre scenes, such as the story series of prints A Rake's Progress (1735 Soane Museum, London). His portraits are remarkably direct and full of character, for example Heads of Six of Hogarth's Servants c. 175055 Tate Gallery, London) and his oil sketch masterpiece The Shrimp Girl (National Gallery, London). He published A Harlot's Progress , a series of six engravings, in 1732. Other story series followed, including Marriage la Mode Industry and Idleness (1749), and The Four Stages of Cruelty (1751). A stern critic of phizmongering (traditional portrait painting), his book The Analysis of Beauty (1753) also attacked the uncritical appreciation of the arts, advocating the double curved line and serpentine spiral as a key to visual beauty (both traceable in the composition of his own work).

Prints by William Hogarth. From The Original Works of William Hogarth. William Hogarth (1697-1764) is considered by many to be the greatest English caricaturist of all time. He was an perceptive observer and his illustrations of the social and political conduct of his day are fascinating historical documents and humorous depictions of human foibles, which have remained much the same over the last two centuries. Hogarth was a painter of considerable accomplishment, but it is for his remarkable prints, which he both composed and engraved, that he is best known. These prints are from a portfolio issued in 1790 by John and Josiah Boydell, and they were printed from the original plates engraved by Hogarth.

THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT, by William Hogarth
William Hogarth (1697 to 1764) was the first English-born artist to attract attention in Europe. He is best known for his moral and satirical engravings and paintings. His attempt to build a reputation as a history painter and portrait artist was met with financial disappointment. His aesthetic philosophy had more influence in literature than in painting.
