22. Holy Trinity Church, Casterton
Victorian church in Cumbria with wall paintings and stained glass windows by henry holiday. Detailed descriptions of the pictures.

Casterton Holy Trinity Church www.casterton.net
The church, built in 1833, owes its existence to the founder of the school, The reverend William Carus-Wilson, a pioneer in education. In 1823 he had started a school for clergy daughters at Cowan Bridge, moving it into purpose-built premises at Casterton ten years later. He had also set up a training school for servants at Casterton and the two schools were later combined to form Casterton School as it is today, an independent boarding school for girls aged 8-18. The chapel was built to provide for both of these schools and for the villagers, a function it fulfils still. From 1888 until 1976, Casterton was a parish, with its own vicar, who also served as Chaplain to the school. In 9176 it came under the care of the team ministry at Kirkby Lonsdale being one of the seven churches in the group. The school now has its own chaplain, but weekly services are still held in the church for both school and villagers and the building has a special place in the hearts of many generations of Old Castertonians. THE NAVE
The Most striking features of the church are probably the unusual wall paintings, not true murals, but painted on canvas then fixed to the walls. Those on the north and south walls of the nave were painted by James Clark RA and added to the church between 1901 and 1910, the gift of Miss Lucy Bickersteth of Casterton Hall.

(ES/PIJ) The scene is described by Dante in his book La Vita Nuova / The New Life. Note his left hand, the expression of his emotion when seeing Beatrice for the first time. He thought his heart would stop beating. Beatrice, of course is the girl in the middle.

About Betty Fold
“ I have visited many parts of the World and have revelled in the marvellous beauties to be found in them, but for concentrated loveliness I know nothing that can quite compare with the lakes and mountains of Westmorland, Cumberland and Lancashire” So wrote Henry Holiday who built Betty Fold as a holiday home. The house was built in 1907-8 by Henry Holiday who was an artist and designer of stained glass windows. He was a friend of William Morris, Rosetti and Edward Burne-Jones and a regular visitor to John Ruskin at Brantwood. There are several examples of his stained glass in local churches. A list of these and his book “Reminiscences of my life” are available for guests to read.
Oscar Gnosspelius, on whom the "Swallows and Amazons" character "Squashy Hat" is based, once owned Betty Fold. Henry Holiday Much of Henry Holidays work is in the Pre-Raphaelite style. His best known painting is of Beatrice and Dante which is in the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. There is also a huge mural in Rochdale Town Hall of the Signing of the Magna Carta. He was particularly renowned for his stained glass designs and there are many fine examples in local churches e.g. St John’s Keswick, St Mary’s Rydal and Holy Trinity Casterton. The Brunel Window in Westminster Abbey and the Robert E. Lee window in St Paul’s Richmond, Va. USA were also designed by him.

[More info...] Donate via 2Checkout: Amount you would like to donate $ O Henry Blind Man's Holiday Alas for the man and for the artist with the shifting point of perspective! Life shall be a confusion of ways to the one; the landscape shall rise up and confound the other. Take the case of Lorison. At one time he appeared to himself to be the feeblest of fools; at another he conceived that he followed ideals so fine that the world was not yet ready to accept them. During one mood he cursed his folly; possessed by the other, he bore himself with a serene grandeur akin to greatness: in neither did he attain the perspective. Generations before, the name had been "Larsen." His race had bequeathed him its fine-strung, melancholy temperament, its saving balance of thrift and industry. From his point of perspective he saw himself an outcast from society, forever to be a shady skulker along the ragged edge of respectability; a denizen des trois-quartz de monde, that pathetic spheroid lying between the haut and the demi, whose inhabitants envy each of their neigh- bours, and are scorned by both. He was self-condemned to this opinion, as he was self-exiled, through it, to this quaint Southern city a thousand miles from his former home. Here he had dwelt for longer than a year, know- ing but few, keeping in a subjective world of shadows which was invaded at times by the perplexing bulks of jarring realities. Then he fell in love with a girl whom he met in a cheap restaurant, and his story begins.

‘O. Henry Christmas’ a holiday tradition for many
By Alexis Kindig On-line Forty-Niner It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Edison Theatre in downtown Long Beach. Beginning Friday, California Repertory will be performing its traditional play “An O. Henry Christmas.” Written by Cal Rep’s own Artistic Producing Director, Howard Burman, the play is based on several O. Henry stories, including, “The Gift of the Magi,” “Two Thanksgiving Gentlemen” and “The Last Leaf.” Burman is also the chairman of the theater department at Cal State Long Beach.
