Dante and Beatrice 1883 by Henry Holiday (1839 - 1927) Henry Holiday was a painter as well as an established stained glass artist who had commissions both in England(Trinity College Cambridge, Birkenhead New Ferry Liverpool, St.James's Church, Kirkby Church and Huyton Church in Liverpool) and America (amongst others the Holy Trinity Church in Manhattan New York). He was also an illustrator, his most important illustrations being the ones he made for Lewis Carroll's book The Hunting of the Snark . Holiday was the youngest student of painting at the Royal Academy Schools in 1855. Like many of the young artists of his time Holiday was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite painters. Early in his career he was praised by the painter Millais (1829-1898) and was in contact with artists such as Holman Hunt Edwar d Burne Jones (1833-1898) and D.G. Rossetti (1828-1882). Holiday also knew the critic John Ruskin who encouraged the young painter.

The next day Hairy Henry arrived at London airport. He got off the plane and took a train to the centre of the city. "I'll go and find my cousin," said Hairy Henry. He walked around the city. There were lots of tall buildings and people everywhere. He looked up into the sky and saw Big Ben.
"Ah, that's where he is," said Hairy Henry. He went to the clock tower and climbed up the stairs. He was very tired when he got to the top. He looked at the clock face. It was five minutes to twelve.
Big Ben is the name of a very famous clock in London. What will Hairy Henry find inside the clock tower? go back to page 1 go to page 3

Suddenly a rather round, fat, purple body appeared. It was his cousin Ben. Now some people think that 'Big Ben' is the name of the clock. But we all know that 'Big Ben' is really Hairy Henry's cousin, the Clock Monster. "Hello," said Ben. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm on holiday," said Hairy Henry.
"Hold on a minute," said Ben. He banged the huge metal bells twelve times. The noise was horrible. Hairy Henry couldn't hear anything else. "OK," said Big Ben. "Let's go and see London!" go back to page 2 go to page 4

John Henry "Doc" Holliday The Living Dead Man by Sierra When he died in bed on Tuesday, 8 November 1887, John Henry “Doc” Holliday laughed. He had always expected to go out in a blaze of glory with his boots on in some hotly contested gun battle, not on a comfortable bed in a spiffy health resort in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Throughout his short life, he had lived one hell-raising adventure after another, adventures which wrote him into western legend. The irony of the situation tickled him. With a monumental last effort, he raised himself up on his elbows, gazed wonderingly at his bare feet, and said, “Well, I’ll be damned. This is funny.” Then he laid back and quietly died, leaving behind one of the strangest legends in American history. It is not known exactly when the Henry Burroughs Holliday family moved to Georgia. Henry was born on 11 March 1819 in Laurens County, South Carolina to Robert Alexander and Rebecca (Burroughs) Holliday It is known that he enlisted in the 1 st Georgia Volunteers on 12 May 1838 under Captain John D. Stills to fight the Cherokee Indian War.

Blind Man's Holiday
Search on this Page: Alas for the man and for the artist with the shifting point of perspective! Life shall be a confusion of ways to the one; the landscape shall rise up and confound the other. Take the case of Lorison. At one time he appeared to himself to be the feeblest of fools; at another he conceived that he followed ideals so fine that the world was not yet ready to accept them. During one mood he cursed his folly; possessed by the other, he bore himself with a serene grandeur akin to greatness: in neither did he attain the perspective.
Generations before, the name had been "Larsen." His race had bequeathed him its fine-strung, melancholy temperament, its saving balance of thrift and industry.
From his point of perspective he saw himself an outcast from society, forever to be a shady skulker along the ragged edge of respectability; a denizen des trois-quartz de monde, that pathetic spheroid lying between the haut and the demi, whose inhabitants envy each of their neigh- bours, and are scorned by both. He was self-condemned to this opinion, as he was self-exiled, through it, to this quaint Southern city a thousand miles from his former home. Here he had dwelt for longer than a year, know- ing but few, keeping in a subjective world of shadows which was invaded at times by the perplexing bulks of jarring realities. Then he fell in love with a girl whom he met in a cheap restaurant, and his story begins.

(HOME) A HOLIDAY IN A VACATION It was all vastly entertaining and well-ordered, and you would think that any person with a properly constituted mind ought to be able to peg through a vacation in such a place without wavering. But when the boy confessed to me that he felt the need of a few "days off" in the big woods to keep him up to his duty, I saw at once that the money spent upon his education had not been wasted; for here, without effort, he announced a great psychological fact - that no vacation is perfect without a holiday in it . So we packed our camping-kit, made our peace with the family, tied our engagements together and cut the string below the knot, and set out to find freedom and a little fishing in the region around Lake Nicatous. As we rattled along the road the farms grew poorer and sparser, until at last we came into the woods, crossed the rocky Passadumkeag River, and so over a succession of horseback hills to the landing-place on Nicatous Stream, where the canoes were hidden in the bushes. Now load up with the bundles and boxes, the tent, the blanket-roll, the clothes-bag, the provisions all the stuff that is known as "duffel" in New York, and " butins " in French Canada, and "

On saturday, the weather is better and in the shining sun we go to the Vatnajökull. We ramble through a beautifull landscape along road number 1 south from the Kaldbakur. The south side of the road consists of a giant grey sand area that is formed by lots of glacier rivers, but the north side is green on most of the places.
Landscape along road number 1 south of Kaldbukur In the Skaftafell National Park we visit the 20 meters hight Svartifoss waterfall that is especially known for its beautifull basalt formations. The Skaftafell Park has a rich flora with birch trees.
Henry in the Suzuki Jimny - Skeidarárjökull - The Svartifoss Waterfall After we have visited the Svinafelljökull glacier and made a trip to the 140 meters high Stigafoss waterfall, we go on to the Jökulsarlon. This 130 meters deep glacier lake with a lot of ice floes is really magnificent. The ice bergs originate from the Breidamerjökull.
The Stigafoss waterfall - The glacier lake Jökulsarlon Some further along road 1, we find a nice place behind a hillock to put the tent. By night, we have a beautifull view over the Atlantic Ocean from this hill. The next day, we go on along the coast past Höfn.

Bank Holiday Monday
Henry Sutton
This book tells the story of a long weekend break taken by a disparate group of friends in a windmill on the North Norfolk Coast. The author uses this situation to make a number of observations about the group dynamics ( the fact that they do not know each other well enough to embark on such a trip, and the fact that they are continually unsure about what to do with their time). Andrew noted that he thought this book was better than Househunter (see below) but has an unsatisfactory abrupt ending. Gill thought the author had a good sense of dialogue and recommended the book.

Holiday Reading.
Well, the holiday season is almost upon us, and I bet you're all frantically rushing around shopping, baking, making arrangements to ensure Auntie Nellie and Grandma aren't in the same room for more than five minutes because you remember what happened last year don't you, writing cards, receiving cards, fuming that you haven't got a card from cousin Bert again , buying turkeys, stuffing turkeys, buying another turkey because the alsatian got the last one and all the other many and various delightful preparations for the Christmas season. So you'll all be rushed off your feet for the next week or so. But what after then? OK, you'll go and visit the relatives on Boxing Day, but then there's the long slow haul to New Year; almost a whole week of quietude before it's time to go to a party, get drunk, make a pass at someone wildly unsuitable, have your face slapped, and stagger home filled with ethyl alcohol and the promise of a bright new 1998.
So, you have a few days between the 26th and the 31st December to put your feet up. And what better to put your feet up with than a good book? Well, that's what the boss tells me anyway. Personally, I'd have said his favourite leisure-time activity would be putting his feet up with a good beer, or possibly a good blonde, but I promised him I wouldn't cast aspersions on his sobriety again so forget I said that.
So, what can I do in the literary line for you all? Books on-line? Hmm. OK for our American cousins with their unlimited free local 'phone calls, but browsing a whole book on-line costs too much for us Brits (although a citizen of the web, I consider myself, in some strange way, British). So, if not books then what? I talked this over with the boss, who's a bit of a literary cove in his spare time (although you wouldn't believe it from his prose style). We finally decided I should go and look for sites relating to some of his favourite authors. 'That way, Henry,' he slurred, beer fumes wafting across the keyboard (No! Bad Henry!

CONTACT: Rich Jefferson (540) 338-8663 or media@hslda.org PURCELLVILLE, VA The collection is on loan to the college from Purcellville resident David Eno. On display at Patrick Henry College will be 43 pieces of art commissioned by 11 presidents, including art from presidents Eisenhower through Clinton, chosen by the first family for their Christmas cards. The collection also features limited edition lithographs that were presented to foreign dignitaries, personal friends, and senior White House staff members. Similar art is held by the Smithsonian Museum, the White House Historical Society, presidential birthplace museums and presidential libraries, Eno said. "We appreciate supporters like David Eno," said Mike Farris, president of Patrick Henry College. "It is our hope that community members will visit us December 17 and view this unique local collection of art commissioned chiefly by the presidents of the second half of the 20th Century." Eno collected the pieces while employed by the State of New York in Albany, and while working on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. During his remarkable career, Eno has been the Majority Press Secretary for the New York Speaker of the Assembly, Perry B. Duryea; the press secretary for New York Lt. Gov. Mary Anne Krupsak; and a senior aide to New York's State Sen. Edwin Mason. He lead Krupsak's team to save Radio City Music Hall from the wrecking ball, and was involved in the early planning of the famous "I Love New York" tourism campaign. On Capitol Hill, Eno was senior aide and press secretary for Senators Roger Jepsen (R-IA) and James Abdnor (R -SD). He was also on the professional staff of Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman (R-NY), now the Chairman of the House International Relations Committee.
