The Life and Works of Winslow Homer
The Country School, 1871 by: Randy Rausch
April 25 th The Life and Works of Winslow Homer Due to its geographical and political history, the United States was heavily influenced by the styles in art and architecture already developed to a high point in the mature societies of Europe. During the 19th century, however, the country developed distinctive variations of the European models. Finally, by the middle of the 20th century, U.S. masters and schools of art were exerting a powerful worldwide influence over art and architecture. Winslow Homer contributed a large amount to the realm of American art. Born in Boston, Winslow Homer spent his childhood in then-rural Cambridge. He began his career about 1855 as an apprentice to a lithographer, for whom he produced sheet-music covers and other commercial works. After two years, at age 21, he set out to be a freelance illustrator and soon was a major contributor of drawings for wood engravings to popular magazines. In 1859 he moved to New York, where the publishers who commissioned his illustrations were located. There he also pursued his ambitions as a painter, and briefly attended life classes at the National Academy of Design. Six months after the outbreak of the Civil War, Homer was sent to the front in Virginia as an artist-correspondent for the illustrated journal, In the late 1860s and 1870s, Homer traveled during the summers to the Adirondacks, as well as New York State, and to seaside resorts in New Jersey and Massachusetts. As an avid sport-fisherman and hunter, his primary subject matter then was idyllic, as Homer chronicled the lives of rural Americans that be seen in such paintings as

WINSLOW HOMER
A BIVOUAC FIRE ON THE POTOMAC
View Matted image Artist: HOMER, WINSLOW (Boston, 1836 - Scarboro, Maine, 1910) Date: DECEMBER 21, 1861 Medium: ORIGINAL WOOD ENGRAVING Publisher: HARPER’S, NEW YORK Raisonne: Note: Winslow Homer: Winslow Homer drew inspiration for his art from a number of sources. The graphic patterns and lines of the Japanese woodcut are most frequently referred to. As well, the art of the French Impressionists played a contributing role. However, the draftsmanship he acquired as a major designer of wood engravings is the key to understanding all his fine art. Throughout his famous career his style retained this basic graphic character; even his last paintings were built upon this foundation. Source: Harper's Weekly Note: There is no doubt that as both a painter and as a graphic designer, Winslow Homer’s position as one of America’s greatest artists is secure. It was with his wood engravings that the world was first introduced to Homer’s unique talents. This original wood engraving is one of his most famous scenes depicting the American Civil War.
