Edward Hopper
Nighthawks
Oil on canvas, 1942; 84.1 x 152.4 cm
Friends of American Art Collection, 1942.51 Edward Hopper said that Nighthawks was inspired by "a restaurant on New York's Greenwich Avenue where two streets meet," but the image, with its carefully constructed composition and lack of narrative, has a timeless quality that transcends its particular locale. One of the best-known images of 20th-century art, the painting depicts an all-night diner in which three customers, all lost in their own thoughts, have congregated. Fluorescent lights had just come into use in the early 1940s, and the all-night diner emits an eerie glow, like a beacon on the dark street corner. Hopper eliminated any reference to an entrance, and the viewer, drawn to the light, is shut out from the scene by a seamless wedge of glass. The four anonymous and uncommunicative night owls seem as separate and remote from the viewer as they are from one another. VIEW larger picture

Edward Hopper: City, Country, Town The exhibition Edward Hopper: City , Country, Town consisted of 50 oils, watercolors, etchings and drawings from the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Works in this exhibition spanned periods from Edward Hopper’s late teens to his final years. While Hopper was often best remembered for his scenes depicting solitary individuals in urban environments, he was equally accomplished in his sensitive, yet severe depictions of modern landscapes, both urban and rural. In spite of his use of traditional subject matter, Hopper was labeled a modernist. His objective was to make his art romantic and lyric, elevating the particular to the epic and universal; however, his images remained within representational boundaries. This exhibition was organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Fairfield County with support from Champion International Corporation. Back to the 1980s exhibitions

Edward Hopper The major Twentieth Century American Realist painter Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1882. After completing six years of study at the New York School of Art in 1906, he took a number of extended trips to Paris to paint.
Earning his living as a commercial artist in New York during his twenties and thirties, he continued to paint and exhibit his work; "Sailing", for example, was included in the Armory Show of 1913.
That same year he moved to the Greenwich Village quarters he would occupy for the rest of his life, and soon thereafter began a longtime tradition of summering on the New England coast. In 1924, when he was forty-two, every painting in his one-man show at a New York gallery was sold, and his reputation as an overnight success was firmly established. Hopper now devoted himself entirely to his art, but he was distrustful of popularity and worked slowly and methodically, completing one or two paintings a year until his death in 1967.
His work is distinguished by his enigmatic yet precise representation of the solitude inherent in urban landscapes and interiors, human relationships, the open road, and the expansive sea.

P22 Hopper
This font set is based on the handwriting styles of quintessential American artist Edward Hopper and his wife, Josephine Nivison Hopper, and was produced in conjunction with the Whitney Museum of American Art. Both artists kept a record of Edward's paintings in a series of journals, which provide the basis for this set. Unlike font sets which feature two similar handwriting samples of one artist, the Edward Hopper font set presents two distinct handwriting styles. The Edward Hopper font is typically masculine, with its sharp angularity, while the Josephine Hopper font presents an interesting contrast, given its elegant, rounded shape, with significantly more flourish. The extras, culled from the aforementioned journals, feature 52 Hopper sketches, which run the gamut from landscapes to nude studies. Try looking at more fonts like this

Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1882. He studied under Robert Henri at the New York School of Art from 1900 to 1906. His work was exhibited in the Armoury Show in 1913 but was forced to make his living as a commercial illustrator rather than as a fine artist until 1924.
Hopper's distinctive style emerged soon after becoming a full-time painter and changed very little throughout his career. The central theme of his work was the loneliness of city life. His paintings are usually set in places such as motel rooms, filling stations, cafeterias, bars and offices. Hopper's work soon g ained recognition and in 1933 the Museum of Modern Art gave him a retrospective exhibition.

Edward Hopper Hopper had his first one-artist show at the Whitney Studio Club, the precursor to the Whitney Museum. Throughout his life, he exhibited in numerous Annuals and Biennials and he was given important retrospective exhibitions in 1950, 1964, and 1980. This close relationship between the artist and the Whitney prompted Hopper's widow, Josephine, to bequeath his entire artistic estate to the Museum in 1970. Consisting of more than 2,500 oils, watercolors, drawings, and prints dating from Hopper's student days to his later years, as well as his illustrated journals, it is the largest single gift of art work in the history of the Museum.

Guide Entry to 89.05.01:
My unit was designed to create a narrative exposition of America, from the rolling hills and seashores of New England, through the myriad of major cities and towns, and finally, moving westward, to travel along the highways and the railways as we cut our way across the United States. But along the way, our unit altered its focus. Edward Hopper was a talented and gifted artist who sought to interpret and to report the changing times and the technological achievements as he perceived them through his own eyes and the synthesis of his inner experiences. Having painted over several decades, he produced a limited number of works as he was not accustomed to paint just for painting’s sake. Rather, he would work an idea over in his mind many times and add or delete several portions of the composition as he saw fit. Sometimes a painting would have a door or a window from other cities or towns. Utilizing various thematic and compositional techniques, he conveyed his impressions of a changing America as he traveled through the Great Depression, past the war years, and culminated with his comedian farewell in 1965. Hopper was an expert in creating specific moods. His effective usage of light and shadows created dramatic scenes and he often used the horizontal border effect of railroad tracks, a railing, or a bridge, for example, to set the stage beyond which the drama would begin to unfold. He often painted solitary figures or places to convey the loneliness of a big city or a bygone era.

See also: American Art Charleston Renaissance "Edward Hopper, the best-known American realist of the inter-war period, once said: 'The man's the work. Something doesn't come out of nothing.' This offers a clue to interpreting the work of an artist who was not only intensely private, but who made solitude and introspection important themes in his painting. "He was born in the small Hudson River town of Nyack, New York State, on 22 July 1882. His family were solidly middle-class: his father owned a dry goods store where the young Hopper sometimes worked after school. By 1899 he had already decided to become an artist, but his parents persuaded him to begin by studying commercial illustration because this seemed to offer a more secure future. He first attended the New York School of Illustrating (more obscure than its title suggests), then in 1900 transferred to the New York School of Art. Here the leading figure and chief instructor was William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), an elegant imitator of Sargent . He also worked under Robert Henri (1869-1929), one of the fathers of American Realism - a man whom he later described as 'the most influential teacher I had', adding 'men didn't get much from Chase; there were mostly women in the class.' Hopper was a slow developer - he remained at the School of Art for seven years, latterly undertaking some teaching work himself. However, like the majority of the young American artists of the time, he longed to study in France. With his parents' help he finally left for Paris in October 1906. This was an exciting moment in the history of the Modern movement, but Hopper was to claim that its effect on him was minimal:

Edward Hopper
[American Scene Painter, 1882-1967]
Studied under Robert Henri Edward Hopper was the quintessential realist painter of twentieth-century America. His images have become part of the very grain and texture of American experience, and even today, thirty years after his death, it is all but impossible to see America without some refraction through them.

Hopper, Edward
T IMELINE Pre-War American Painting Hopper, Edward (1882-1967). American painter, active mainly in New York. He trained under Robert Henri, 1900-06, and between 1906 and 1910 made three trips to Europe, though these had little influence on his style. Hopper exhibited at the Armoury Show in 1913, but from then until 1923 he abandoned painting, earning his living by commercial illustration. Thereafter, however, he gained widespread recognition as a central exponent of American Scene painting, expressing the loneliness, vacuity, and stagnation of town life. Yet Hopper remained always an individualist: `I don't think I ever tried to paint the American scene; I'm trying to paint myself.'
  • Nighthawks
1942 (120 Kb); Oil on canvas, 30 x 60 in; The Art Institute of Chicago
Paintings such as Nighthawks (Art Institute of Chicago, 1942) convey a mood of loneliness and desolation by their emptiness or by the presence of anonymous, non-communicating figures. But of this picture Hopper said: `I didn't see it as particularly lonely... Unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.' Deliberately so or not, in his still, reserved, and blandly handled paintings Hopper often exerts a powerful psychological impact distantly akin to that made by the Metaphysical painter de Chirico; but while de Chirico's effect was obtained by making the unreal seem real, Hopper's was rooted in the presentation of the familiar and concrete.
