Edward Hopper
The major Twentieth Century American Realist painter Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1882. After completing six years of study at the New York School of Art in 1906, he took a number of extended trips to Paris to paint.
Earning his living as a commercial artist in New York during his twenties and thirties, he continued to paint and exhibit his work; "Sailing", for example, was included in the Armory Show of 1913.
That same year he moved to the Greenwich Village quarters he would occupy for the rest of his life, and soon thereafter began a longtime tradition of summering on the New England coast. In 1924, when he was forty-two, every painting in his one-man show at a New York gallery was sold, and his reputation as an overnight success was firmly established. Hopper now devoted himself entirely to his art, but he was distrustful of popularity and worked slowly and methodically, completing one or two paintings a year until his death in 1967.
His work is distinguished by his enigmatic yet precise representation of the solitude inherent in urban landscapes and interiors, human relationships, the open road, and the expansive sea.

Hopper, Edward
House by the Railroad
1925 (130 Kb); Oil on canvas, 60.9 x 73.6 cm (24 x 29 in) Hopper frequently used a straight. horizontal motif, usually a road or railroad track. to construct the space within the picture and to emphasize the division between the picture space and the viewer's world. Indeed, the more the viewer tries to penetrate the depths of a Hopper painting, the more impenetrable it becomes. What holds the viewer is that the artist's vision seems under control and yet, on closer inspection, the viewer realizes that the visible surface is a tissue of improbabilities and unreadable shifts in space. Hopper's view that nature and the contemporary world were incoherent contributed to his artistic vision.
  • Indications of the structure of the house were brushed in with a minimum of black paint in a turpentine mixture. The columns and windows on the right shadowed side of the house clearly show this.
  • The house was then painted from dark to light: Hopper gradually added more oil paint to the turpentine and built up the forms with free, often diagonal brushwork.
  • The side of the house in bright sunlight was executed less freely with transparent darks and opaque lights. Lines of blue were added after the opaque white to define forms.

Home Featured Artist - Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper Few artists have painted so honest and revealing a portrait of America as did Edward Hopper. His timeless images of the wayside night cafe, the empty movie theatre, and the Victorian house by the railroad track all live in memory as the ultimate rendering of those subjects. There is a frugality in Hopper's work, a careful selection of people, buildings and interiors, just as there was to the man himself. He worked in the same studio on Washington Square for fifty-four years, rarely venturing out, except for summers in New England and an occasional visit to the Southwest. He died in his studio on May l5, l967.
Hopper's vision was unique. The people inhabiting his city and suburban scenes are lonely, anonymous, temporary inhabitants of sometimes inhospitable environments. When there is no human element, he transfers these qualities to the architecture or even to the landscape itself, using intense light to infuse human emotion. See all works by Edward Hopper.

    HOME EXHIBITIONS
The Birthplace and Boyhood Home of Edward Hopper From the porch of the two-story clapboard house located at 82 North Broadway, Nyack, New York, you have a clear view down the slope of Second Avenue to the bank of the Hudson River and the opposite shore the view that young Edward Hopper saw every day from his upstairs window when he was growing up before the turn of the century.
The house had been built in 1858 by the boy's maternal grandfather. Edward's father, Garrett Hopper, moved into the house after marrying the owner's daughter Elizabeth in 1878. Both Edward and his sister Marion were born in the house - she in 1880 and he in 1882. Marion lived in the house, unmarried, until her death in 1965. Although Edward left Nyack in 1910 to live in Manhattan, he held title to the house until he died in 1967. No other family has owned it.
The Hopper family was solidly American middle class. Garrett Hopper owned a dry goods store, where women bought material for making clothes before the days of ready -to-wear. The Hoppers were prosperous emough for Edward to make three trips to Paris in the decade after his graduation from Nyack High School (then on Liberty Street).
Although he grew up to be a cultivated, well-read man, Edward Hopper always reflected his upbringing as the son of a small businessman upstate. Although something like half the business blocks we see were built in the first decade of Hopper's life and well over a hundred houses now here were already standing, the town had a far different character when Edward Hopper was going to school.

Josephine N. Hopper Bequest 70.1170 Early Sunday Morning Seven A.M. (1948), and A Woman in the Sun (1961) have made Hopper one of America's most beloved artists. These cornerstones of the Whitney Museum's Hopper collection, as well as the numerous early paintings, loosely painted watercolors, and revealing charcoal and pencil studies, have made the Whitney a crucial center for the study and exhibition of this important American artist's life and work. The works shown here represent a tiny fraction of the Whitney's Edward Hopper holdings, but nonetheless provide a glimpse of his entire career. (A definitive by Gail Levin was published in 1995.) The number before the decimal in the accession number indicates the year in which the work entered the Whitney's Permanent Collection. Works left untitled by the artist were given descriptive titles (in parentheses) by the Museum. Visit www.amico.org, the public website of the Art Museum Image Consortium, to browse through additional Hopper images and thousands of art works from twenty-seven member art institutions from across North America and Europe. Return to AMICO in June 1999 to view the Whitney's initial contribution to this pioneering digital library: five hundred thumbnails of oil paintings, prints, and works on paper by Edward Hopper.

George Platt Lynes began his studies in photographic portraiture during the 1920s and opened a studio in 1933. An intense concern with formal composition and striking light effects characterizes his photographs. Lynes took this photograph of Edward Hopper on February 21, 1950, at the artist's New York studio. He dramatically highlighted Hopper's hands. The hearth and wood stove balance the shope of Hopper's shoulders.
