Hunt, William Holman
painter great-britain 2 Apr 1827, London - 7 Sep 1910
Grave location: London: St. Paul's Cathedral
Founding member of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood. Het met John Millais at the price giving of the Royal Academy in 1843 and soon they became friends. In later years Thomas Woolner (also one of the founders of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood) argued that they even had a homosexual relationship.
When Dante Gabriel Rossetti saw his "The Eve of Saint Agnes" at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1846 he was impressed, praised it loudly and started proclaiming poems by Shelley, Blake and Browning. Afterwards Rossetti and Hunt became friends. In 1851 Ruskin praised "Valentine and Sylvia" in two letters to The Times after it had been attacked by critics like Kingsley and Macaulay. Hunt had used the model Lizzy Siddal for the face of Sylvia, but exactly this choice was considered 'unfortunate' even by Ruskin.
In 1854 Hunt left for the Holy Land to paint biblic scenes at the authentic places. In 1856 he was rejected as a member of the Royal Academy with 39 votes against 1. He married Fanny Waugh in 1865, but she died after childbirth. Against the law, he married her sister Edith in Switzerland. Only in 1907 their marriage became legal in England.
Work: "Our English Coasts" (1853, The Tate Gallery, London); "The Scapegoat" (1854-1855, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Birkenhead); "The Light of the World" (1853, Ashmolean Museum at Oxford University).

William Holman Hunt
(b 2 April 1827, London - d 7 Sept 1910, London)
illiam Holman Hunt was born in not very rich puritan family. He overcame the parental opposition to his choice of career and dedication to the art. From the age of 12 he worked as an office clerk and he had an opportunity to attend drawing classes in the evenings. When he was 16 he gave up the work at the office and began to earn money making copies from popular pictures and portraying friends. In 1844, at the third attempt, he entered the Royal Academy Schools. Here met Millais and Rossetti and in 1848 they founded the "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ".
Holman Hunt was the only "brother" who read "Modern Painters" of John Ruskin, the first volume of which he discovered in 1845. The Ruskin's ideas were incredibly conformable to Hunt's own ideas about artist's aim. According to the Ruskin's statements Hunt settled his own principles of art: full transferring of nature, adherence to the inward emotional experience, pedagogical role of art, maintenance of the national traditions, revival of medieval craft and art system. He was the only one in the whole "Brotherhood" who was faithful to his chosen way till the end of his life.
In 1849 he exhibited his first "Pre-Raphaelite" canvas in Academy "Rienzi vowing to obtain Justice for the Death of his young Brother, slain in a skirmish between the Colonna and Orsini factions"(Private collection). In this work Hunt tried to follow his selected technique: he painted the detailed landscape. However only in his next paintings - "Claudio and Isabella (1850, Tate Gallery), "Valentine Rescuing Silvia from Proteus"(1851, Birmingham Art City Museum and Gallery)

William Holman Hunt's "Oriental Mania" and His Uffizi Self-portrait
George P. Landow , Professor of English and Art, Brown University
[This essay originally appeared in The Art Bulletin, . In fact, the painting seems to have been virtually unknown until its inclusion in the 1971 Pitti Palace exhibition "Firenze e l'lnghilterra, " despite the fact that a copy of it also hands in Hunt's London club, The Athenaeum. Although the catalogue of the exhibition reproduces the Self-portrait , it contains little information about it, and the relevant catalogue entry confines itself to general remarks about Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This little-studied work would deserve our attention if only because it is the finest self-portrait painted by an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . But the Uffizi Self-portrait also adds to our knowledge of Hunt at mid-career and has the additional importance of being the pictorial means by which the artist chose to sum up his life and art.

Hunt, William Holman (1827-1910) Holman Hunt was born in Cheapside, London. Even as a youth, he desired to be an artist. He gained admission to the Royal Academy Schools on his third attempt, and there met Millais and Rossetti, and together they founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He made various journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem, religious scenes dominate many of his works.
Arguably, of the three, Holman Hunt was the one who stayed most faithful to the Pre-Raphaelite ideas and painting techniques. His paintings are characterized by detail and use of light that sometimes makes his colors harsh. Some critics complain of the harshness of his painstaking work claiming that while interesting, his works are not beautiful to look at. Judge for yourself.
One of his more famous paintings presented here, The Lady of Shalott, hangs in Manchester. Artwork in the Artists' Section Contents In Search of Arthur A ... Index
