William Holman Hunt (1827-1910)
Holman Hunt was born in Cheapside, London. He was keen to be an artist, despite discouragement from his father, a warehouseman. He gained admission to the Royal Academy on his third attempt, and there met Millais and afterwards Rossetti, and together they founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt stayed faithful to the Pre-Raphaelite ideas and painting techniques, and he claimed that he never modified his: Uncompromising assertion of the principles of truth in preference to beauty. Hunt's paintings - nearly all religious or moralistic - have messages to be read and are characterised by extreme detail and a brightness of light that makes the colour somewhat harsh. Hunt's paintings were painstaking efforts, and he took a long time on each one. He made various journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem. The best known of them all is The Light of the World. He also produced book illustrations for the Moxton Tennyson. Our English Coasts, 1852 (Strayed Sheep) Primrose and bird's nest The Awakening Conscience

Hunt, William Holman
Hunt was born in London on 2 April 1827 and entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1844, where he met John Everett Millais, his life-long friend. In 1848-9, Hunt and Millais, together with D. G. Rossetti and several other painters, formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; as a group these artists turned from the Royal Academy and its styles of painting and pledged themselves instead to paint accurately and faithfully from nature in precise detail. In dedication to these principles Hunt visited the Holy Land three timesin 1854, 1869 and 1873to study and capture the correct historical and natural backgrounds and lighting for his religious paintings.
His best-known painting in this genre is The Light of the World (1853), which now hangs in Keble College, Oxford (the original) and in St. Paul's Cathedral (a larger copy). Like all his paintings, the details are meticulously rendered, the craftsmanship superb, and the canvas filled with allusion and symbolic implications.
Hunt did several paintings on scenes from Shakespeare, and he felt an affinity for the playwright, who, he says in his memoirs, impressed him with his ability to speak to people of all classes, the rich and the poor, the educated and the manual laborer:

Introduction Hunt was born in London and entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1844. Hunt would soon play a pivitol role in forming the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ... The Pre-Raphaelites were dedicated to using their art to express moral lessons, while paying strict attention to historical accuracy and graphic realism. Few of the Pre-Raphaelite's could match Hunt for his determination to adhere to these principles.

Claudio and Isabella This painting depicts a moment from Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure" when Isabella visits her brother Claudio in prison to tell him that her plea for mercy from Angelo has failed. To make matters even worse for poor Claudio, Angelo has lewdly suggested that she trade her virginity for her brother's life. - While doing research for this piece, Hunt paid a visit to the Lollard prison at Lambeth Palace.

William Holman Hunt (1827-1910)
Introduction W.H. Hunt J.E. Millais D.G. Rossetti Pre-Raphaelite Followers Pre-Raphaelite Successors ... Home A long with John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti , William Holman Hunt, the son of a warehouse worker who was pressured as a youth to serve as an apprentice and advised to seek out a "proper job", went on to become one of the founding members of The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and one of the most popular artists of his time . Although aware of his artistic aspirations, Hunt's parents (unlike those of Millais and Rossetti) did little to encourage his prospects of becoming an artist. Hunt was forced to perservere in a highly critical atmosphere, and, though first turned down in 1847, he was eventually accepted as a student by the Royal Academy. Between his lessons and visits to the National Gallery, Hunt observed that he "gained a practical knowlegde of the Ancient Masters...and that this was fast becoming of importance in my eyes, helping me for my own guidance to look more independently on the state of art as developed by living men". H unt attributes the brotherhood's decision to label themselves "Pre-Raphaelites" to a specific incident involving an argument with other Academy students instigated by Hunt and Millais when they openly criticized the work of Raphael. Though many Pre-Raphaelite artists chose to portray subjects from classical and medieval literary sources, Hunt often painted pictures of religious and moral significance. His style typically incorporated a "moralizing symbolism" in addition to the truthful rendering of detail and nature characteristic of Pre-Raphaelite art.

Bio: William Holman Hunt
William Holman Hunt was an English painter who, together with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais, was a founder in 1848 of the Pre-Raphaelites. In all of his works, many of which are biblical scenes, he strove for Pre-Raphaelite goals of serious moral content, direct study from nature, and historical authenticity. His paintings—of which perhaps the two best known are Finding of Christ in the Temple (1854, City Museum, Birmingham, England) and Scapegoat (1854, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, England)—are minutely detailed and painted in a style characterized by crowded composition and bright, relatively crude colors.

English painter, co-founder of the Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. He was the only member of the Brotherhood who throughout his entire career remained faithful to Pre- Raphaelite aims, which he summarised as finding serious and genuine ideas to express, direct study from nature in disregard of all arbitrary rules, and envisaging events as they must have happened rather than in accordance with the rules of design. Hunt's work was remarkable for its minute precision, its accumulation of incident, and its didactic emphasis on moral or social symbolism, and from 1854 he made several journeys to Egypt and Palestine to paint biblical scenes with accurate local detail.
'The Scapegoat' (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, 1854-55), showing the outcast animal on the shore of the Dead Sea, is one of the most famous paintings that resulted from his fanatical devotion to authenticity. His colour tends to be painfully harsh and his sentiment mawkish, but he created some of the most enduring images of the Victorian age, among them 'The Hireling Shepherd' (Manchester City Art Gallery, 1851), 'The Awakening Conscience' (Tare Gallery, London, 1853), and 'The Light of the World' (Keble College, Oxford, 1851-53; a smaller version is in Manchester City Art Gallery, and a larger replica, begun in 1899, is in St Paul's Cathedral, London).
