"Inness exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design in 1844 and continued to exhibit there almost every year until the end of his life. Though he was elected an Associate of the Academy in 1853, he was not made an Academician until 1868. He was one of the important early members of the Society of American Artists, an exhibition organization founded in 1877 to challenge the conservative policies of the Academy. "Inness and his family left New York in 1860, moving first to Medfield, Massachusetts, and later to an estate near Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In the early 1860s, fellow artist William Page introduced Inness to the theories of Emanuel Swedenborg, which made a deep and lasting impression on him; indeed, became a major force in his intellectual life. Throughout that decade, spent in rural surroundings, he sought to make his paintings convey the profound spiritual meaning he felt the landscape around him possessed. "In 1870, the Innesses moved to Italy for four years, during which time the artist sent back paintings to be sold by the Boston dealers Williams and Everett, receiving in exchange regular monthly payments. Stopping again in Paris on the way back to the United States, in 1874, Inness first saw works by the

INNESS, George , landscape painter, born in Newburg, N. Y., 1 May, 1825. His parents removed to Newark, N. J., where he early learned drawing and the rudiments of oil painting. He has from his youth been subject to epilepsy, which has interfered materially with the consecutive pursuit of his art. When sixteen years old he went to New York to study engraving, but ill health obliged him to return home, where he continued to sketch and paint. When twenty years of age he passed a month in the studio of Regis Gignoux in New York city, which is all the regular instruction he ever had. He then began landscape painting in New York City, made two visits to Europe, and lived in Florence and Rome for some time. For several years after his return he made his home near Boston, where some of his best pictures were painted. In 1862 he went to reside at Eagleswood, near Perth Amboy, N. J., and a few years later removed to New York city. He was chosen a National academician in 1868. From 1871 to 1875 he again resided in Italy. The art life of Inness is marked by two distinct styles, the first indicating careful finish and conscientious regard for details. The second style, formed with the expanding grasp of the principles of art, shows a richer appreciation of the truths of nature, is broad and vigorous, paying higher regard to masses than to details. The quality of his paintings is very uneven, as he is sometimes careless, and often mars a good work by eccentric and experimental devices. Yet no painter has represented the aspects of nature in the American climate with deeper feeling, a finer sentiment of light and color, or a better command of technical resources. He has been more influenced by the French school of landscape painting than any other American artist, yet his style is distinct and original. He is a follower of Swedenborg, and many of his paintings have a spiritual or allegorical significance.

Inness, George , American landscape painter, b. Newburgh, N.Y. His father intended Inness to be a grocer, but he showed artistic talent at an early age and was apprenticed to an engraver. In 1845 he opened a studio in New York City, devoting himself to painting, and two years later with a friend's aid was able to go to Rome. He made a subsequent visit to Rome in 1851, and in 1854 he and his wife went to Paris. On their return they settled in Medfield, Mass. There Inness painted many of his best-known canvases. In later life he enjoyed a high reputation, maintaining studios in New York City and in Montclair, N.J., where most of his last 20 years were spent. The early work of Inness is in the manner of the Hudson River school . His panoramic Peace and Plenty (Metropolitan Mus.) is characteristic of this period. But in a short time he discovered his own personal style which became freer, more intimate, and richer in color. In his later works his subjects, covering a wide range of light effects, became a vehicle for the expression of a consistently romantic mood. Inness was a Swedenborgian and sought the mystical in nature. Among his principal works are Rainbow after a Storm and Millpond (Art Inst., Chicago);

St. Peter's, Rome, St. Peter's, Rome reveals Inness' special fascination with Italy, a concern he shared with many nineteenth-century American painters. Attracted to both the man-made and natural beauty of the country, Inness explored is historical resonance in his paintings of the city and countryside surrounding Rome. St. Peter's Basilica, which dominates the skyline of the painting, is closely associated with the Eternal City. Inness represented it in a watercolor and three paintings resulting from his first European trip of the 1850s. After a later trip in the early 1870s, he painted two final works depicting the domes of the basilica. The painting, dated five years after Inness' return to the United States, is based on the watercolor study that was presumably executed from nature. Both works depict St. Peter's from a slope to the northeast of the basilica near the Villa Giulia, a spot recognized in the standard guidebooks of the day as affording a splendid view of the Vatican. A portion of Bernini's colonnade, encircling St. Peter's Square, may be seen to the left. In the foreground, at the bottom of the slope, is the tunnel known as the Arco Oscuro, with a gate in a wall to its left. Inness' view is composite, and a second study, now lost, may have provided some of these additional details.

George Inness Painting During a burglary of a home in West Los Angeles, thieves took a Persian rug, Russian icons, and artworks by Simeon Solomon, Marino Marini, and George Inness. Inness, an American landscape artist, created Sunset at Milton in 1885. When it was stolen, it was valued at $30,000. There were few clues to act upon, although the rug was later recovered when a shadowy figure sold it to a Persian rug store in Los Angeles. Nine years later, information on the Inness painting finally surfaced when an art internet company called ARTNET.COM posted a photo and information on the painting. It had sold at auction through Sotheby's in New York. Although the statute of limitations had long since lapsed to prosecute the burglar if identified, the painting still belonged to the victim. The investigation revealed that although the painting was stolen in California and then sold in New York, it was purchased by a good faith buyer back in California - about 125 miles from the original burglary location. The painting had been hanging in the buyer's home for over four years. Although he was reimbursed by Sotheby's, he was sad to part with the artwork since he was a collector of George Inness art. Also, the painting had appreciated in value. An expert in George Inness art valued the painting at $100,000-$150,000 at the time of its recovery.
