INNESS ART
(ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: 1978 IN THE SANTA BARBARA NEWS AND REVIEW)
" Early Autumn, Montclair" By Dan Gheno GEORGE INNESS was a frail man who was often subject to epileptic attacks. Yet Inness produced one of the largest oeuvres of any 19th century American landscape artist. Inscribed behind one of his last paintings—"Morning, Catskills Valley" - is the number 1405. It is but one of many 1arge scale, emotionally charged paintings that lnness fanatically produced in the last years of his life. The current exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, GEORGE INNESS, LANDSCAPES: HIS SIGNATURE YEARS 1884-1894 (from the Oakland Art Museum) leaves no doubt about the stature of his work in his "declining years." As we walk in the large gallery at the Museum of Art, we are immediately struck by the massive strength that glows from his naturalistic studies. What nature declined him personally, he found vicariously in the landscapes. Inness professed that his purpose as a landscape artist was "not to imitate a fixed material condition, but to represent a living motion." "Early Autumn, Montclair" portrays centuries of growth in a large ponderous tree. From a bulky base, spindly branches reach out defiantly. They seem. racked and amputated by violent storms, but they move In a determined if erratic path.

Since the beginning of Inness's artistic maturity, the appearance, inspiration, and expressive effect of his paintings was most frequently described as poetic. And as, over time, the style of his paintings became increasingly more suggestive, as their form became broader and their resemblance's to natural appearance less and less direct, their poetic content seemed to grow in direct proportion, reaching its highest and purest state in paintings of the last few years of his life. Painted the year before Inness's death, Hazy Morning, Montclair, New Jersey is one of those late poetic paintings.
The allusiveness of its style, with all solid form blurred, corroded, and reduced to a pervasive vaporous substance more metaphysical than physical in nature-"a subtle essence which exists in all things of the material world" that constitutes "an atmosphere about the bald detail of facts,"-could be regarded as a logical development and climax of Inness's lifelong belief in the value of spiritual meaning, emotional expression, and suggestion: "You must suggest to me reality-you can never show me reality." Inness, however, disclaimed poetic vagueness unequivocally: "Poetry is

http://www.ku.edu/~sma/online/gilded_age/innessbio.html
George Inness Biography
- Born in Newburgh, New York, to middle class, prosperous parents, Inness grew up in New York City and Newark, New Jersey. Received little academic or artistic training during youth because of severe illnesses
- Exhibits at the National Academy of Design in New York. The detailed realism and panoramic views of the Hudson River School artists, such as Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, influence his early works. His landscapes communicate an objective romantic realism.
- Travels to Europe through the patronage of Ogeden Haggerty, a merchant collector. Through his travels he encountered works by contemporary European artists, the old masters, and, most importantly, the French Barbizon School.
Early 1860s - Studies theology and metaphysics. Prefers organized religion and tries a variety.
- Moves to Eagleswood, New Jersey, where he was converted to Swedenborgianism. His new religious beliefs had a profound effect on the style of his art. His works become more intimate and amorphous with dramatic effects of light and atmosphere. They begin to evoke a more subjective, lyrical impression of appearances. He believe that, "The true purpose of the painter is simply to reproduce in other minds the impression which the scene made on him. (George Inness , Jr., Life, Art and Letters of George Inness, Century Company, New York, 1917, p. 131.)
- Elected a full member of The National Academy of Design
- Settles in Montclair, New Jersey
