Trashed Jacobsen Sold in New Orleans by Priscilla St. Germain On Saturday, April 27 Morton M. Goldberg Galleries in New Orleans, Louisiana, helped a local family make the proverbial "windfall profit" with a painting they'd thrown in the trash. The oil on canvas rescued from the rubbish was an Antonio Jacobsen, Pilot Boat "New York" , signed "A Jacobsen/ 1891/ 705 Palisade Ave./ Hoboken N.J." Auctioneer David Goldberg explained that the owner of the Jacobsen was an elderly longshoreman who'd acquired it in his travels. Goldberg said, "The owner's daughter was here in New Orleans from California to help her father move into a retirement home. She told us, `This was in the trash, but I pulled it out and brought it to you to see if it was worth anything.' I explained to her Jacobsen was a highly sought-after marine artist, that his works bring big prices. The garbage definitely wasn't the place for it, and she was going to be glad she pulled it out." Goldberg further elaborated, "New Orleans is a port city, and I can imagine there's more of Jacobsen's works out there." An Atlanta collector paid $16,500 for the Jacobsen painting, which was also Goldberg's April 27th catalog cover lot. The collector was underbid by four northeastern dealers on the phone.

ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (1850 - 1921 American) Probably the most prolific marine painter ever, Antonio Jacobsen was not, in his words, an artist, “but a painter of floating property; of ship portraits.” He painted every sort of vessel in meticulous detail. Most of Jacobsen’s customers were ship masters or owners, and they were not interested in fine art; they wanted an accurate record of what the vessel looked like. Since the period in which Jacobsen was active spanned the transition from sail to steam propulsion, he left an invaluable historical record of transatlantic and coastal shipping. Jacobsen came to the United States in 1871 when the Franco-Prussian war broke out. The Old Dominion Steamship Company noticed his sketches and asked him to paint some of the firm’s ships. Jacobsen began each of his paintings by making detailed sketches in notebooks that he then numbered and catalogued. Throughout his career, he pained and drew every imaginable type of vessel.

He loved drawing and painting ships, and was soon receiving commissions to paint them by owners and Captains. In no time at all, he was in business full time. He worked for several shipping lines creating portraits of all their ships. Often they wanted several pictures of the same ship portrayed in different ports, one for each office! He trained, then employed, his sons to paint the skies and backgrounds after he did the ships. As the mix of ships changed, he did more steam ships than sail.
