Jasper Johns DOB: May 15,1930 ORIGIN: Born, Augusta, Georgia; grew up in South Carolina SCHOOLING/STUDIED WITH: University of South Carolina, Columbia CLASSIFICATION OF ART: Style- Neo-Dada/Pop Art Medium- sculpture and painting Jasper Johns was one of the firsts to be named a Neo-Dadaist, along with Robert Rauschenberg. However, Johns is often seen as the 'father' of Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, according to Kirk Varnedoe, chief curator of the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art. Johns work has changed drastically from his beginnings. In 1954, Johns destroyed most of his works up to that point, claiming that he wanted to create his own style, absent of influence or resemblance to other artists work. It was then that Johns began painting his famous "flag" and "target" paintings. He had his first one-man show in 1958 at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Johns referred to these works as "things the mind already knows... seen and not looked at, not examined". Johns was represented at the Venice Biennale in 1958, as well. His picture "Grey Numbers" also won the International Prize at the Pittsburgh Biennale. In 1959 he worked with Robert Rauschenberg in Allan Kaprow's "Eighteen Happenings in Six Parts", and also took part in the Museum of Modern Art's "Sixteen Americans" show. The 1960s brought with it a new quality to Johns works. The works themselves are more emotional and bring about a feeling of bitterness or melancholy. The paint was applied in a new way; thinned-out areas with smeared and scraped areas. Lithographs also became an interest in the 60s. He was given a comprehensive retrospective in 1964 at the Jewish Museum, New York, and it's catalog included texts by Alan Solomon and John Cage.

Influenced by Marcel Duchamp in the mid-1950s, Johns attempted to transform common objects into art by placing them in an art context. His flags and target images executed from 1954 to 1959 heralded the pop art movement. Johns based his painting technique on the informal brushwork and texture of abstract expressionism , attaching literal elements such as rulers and brooms to the canvas. His bronze castings, such as Beer Cans (1960), are also derived from common objects. His later works, such as the Seasons (1987), have become increasingly self-referential, using recurrent motifs as symbols to pull the viewer into an engagement with the work. Johns, Jasper American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, who has played a leading role in the development of mid-20th-century American art. In 1954 he began painting works in a manner radically different from the abstract expressionist style that then dominated American art (see Abstract Expressionism). His canvases were devoted to such familiar objects as targets, American flags, numbers, and alphabet letters. He painted these subjects with objectivity and precision, applying paint very thickly, so that the paintings became objects in themselves rather than reproductions of recognizable items. This idea of art-as-object became a potent influence on later sculpture as well as painting; he often integrated three-dimensional objects into his paintings. By the end of the 1950s Johns's paintings showed a freer, looser arrangement. In some of them, he attached real objects-such as rulers and compasses-to the canvas. False Start (1959, Scull Collection, New York City)-in which he stenciled intentionally incorrect labels over painted objects and patches of color-is a playful, punning work that was an immediate forerunner of pop art. Johns broke ground again with a four-painting cycle entitled "The Seasons," shown in New York City in early 1987. The 75 by 50-inch paintings were considered especially significant in American art history.
