From the beginning two churches were established: St Paul's to serve the wealthy parish founders in the west and St Barnabas as a mission church to serve the poor in the newly-built terraced housing in the east. The first churches were temporary but in 1888 building began on a new St Paul's Church, which was completed and consecrated in 1896. While the population in St Barnabas' area grew rapidly in the first 50 years, the richer part of the parish scarcely changed. In 1922 St Barnabas became a separate parish and in the 1920s and 1930s St Paul's became known as the smallest and richest parish in the Diocese. All this changed after the second world war when the large mansions and grounds were redeveloped by the LCC / GLC and Wandsworth Borough Council to provide flats for thousands of people displaced by war damage and slum clearance. St Paul's Church responded by building a hall for church and community activities next door to the church and running well-respected youth and children's clubs for children in the parish (its popular summer holiday play scheme has run for over thirty years).

The Ecclesiological Society Index to the Society's Newsletter
'Ecclesiology Today'
and to transactions of the St Paul's Ecclesiological Society
This index lists articles and notes (some quite brief) which have appeared in
the Newsletter of the Ecclesiological Society since the first issue in September 1980 (book reviews excluded)
and
the first volume of the St Paul's Ecclesiological Society Proceedings (1877-1885) (same Society, earlier name)
Over time we will extend the coverage, to be continuous from 1877 to the present.
Search the index alphabetically, or use the 'Find' instruction on your browser. Items are listed alphabetically by subject. Substantial articles have the author in brackets. References are to the issue number, the date, and the page. References to the journal of the St Paul's Ecclesiological Society are in the form SPES, issue number, (date), page number. The first dozen years issues of the Newsletter are referred to in the form NL17 (newsletter 17). In 1993 the newsletter took up the title 'Ecclesiology Today'; references to issues since that date are by volume only, without the prefix 'NL'. The Society does not hold back copies of the Newsletter or SPES for sale. It is occasionally possible to photocopy individual items

St John the Baptist Cookham Dean
photograph by courtesy of Graham Harris Cookham Dean Church was built in 1844, the corner stone being laid by the vicar of Cookham on 15th July of that year. The cost of building the church was £1,300. The building was of flint and brick with a roof tiled with slate. Very traditional materials for the area. The vestry was not added until 1867 at the east end of the south aisle. In 1891 a new vestry was incorporated into the north east porch, this was extended to its present size in 1978. The Victorian oak reredos is well worth a mention. It was carved in 1876 and has four gessoed and gilded panel with painted angels which are copies of angels of Fra Angelico in Florence. The reredos was expertly restored in 1997. There are two churches in Australia built from adaptations of the plans for Cookham Dean Church. The Church Buildings
There has probably been a church on this site since Anglo-Saxon times. The earliest part of the present building is the Tower (1280) with its profusely decorated spire (1315-25). The Adam de Brome Chapel The Adam de Brome Chapel, abutting the west side of the tower was added in 1328 by the then Rector, Adam de Brome, who also established in 1324 a new college, the 'house of the Blessed Virgin Mary', later to be known as Oriel College. The chapel is furnished as a courtroom where the Chancellor of the University had surprisingly wide jurisdiction: he fixed rents, fined sellers of bad meat, and even sent a scolding woman to prison. The Chancel The Chancel was rebuilt in 1453 and contains stalls which are a fine example of late perpendicular woodwork. It is thought that the remains of Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, Queen Elizabeth's favourite, were buried here in 1560. The altar picture is 'The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds' by Francesco Bassano (1549-92).
