Not Slothful in Business: Macleod, Kempe and the Glass of Govan Old Parish Church By Philip N. H. Collins and Adrian Barlow This dramatic presentation of the Govan correspondence was devised by Philip N. H. Collins and written by Adrian Barlow. It was performed ( with illustrative slides ) at the launch event on Saturday 7th July 1990 within the Steven Chapel. Adrian Barlow took the part of the Narrator, Philip Collins the part of Charles Eamer Kempe, and Gilbert Bell used his Scots tongue to give flavour to the Govan 'voices'. All three speakers are members of the Kempe Society. Our connection with the Kempe Society was established by Mr. William Murray, formerly Organist at Govan Old. The correspondence between Kempe and his studio and Dr. John Macleod and Govan Parish has been published by the Kempe Society as 'The Govan Correspondence'. The original letters and accounts are deposited by Govan Old at the Strathclyde Regional Archive, located in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. Narrator 'Not Slothful in Business', the title of our talk, is part of the inscription to be found on the East window of this Church. This window was installed as a memorial to Dr. John Macleod; and the full text of the inscription, approved by the Kirk Session in March 1899, reads as follows:

Usually, patrons are searching for ancestors, researching particular ACW regiments, or looking for examples of items worn or used by soldiers of the period. Ultimately, this database will reflect the full range of MHI's photographic collection, ranging from the periods of the Mexican War in the 1840s to recent operations such as those in Somalia and Bosnia. As our digitization efforts expand, we hope to provide links to scanned images through this database. The following photos were found: To order above photo, see MHI Web Page

    Who Made My Windows
    Who Made My Windows?
by Helene H. Weis An adaptation of Heinrich Hoffmann's Jesus Praying in

in stained glass by the Willet Studio.

Balano Studios Logo The Pilgrims by Henry Holiday is a design that has been used at least three times. The window above is in Chambersburg, PA; another version is in the Holy Trinity Church, Philadelphia, PA; yet another installation is in Canada in two lancet windows. Photograph from the Willet Studios library. Introduction
There is a renewed interest in the stained glass windows in churches where they were once taken for granted. Not long ago, when the windows of a church began to look old fashioned or needed extensive repairs, they were replaced. This was easier for the stained glass studio and was probably cheaper than repairs that no one then knew much about anyway. New styles of church architecture called for new styles of decoration. Now, society as a whole has become more aware of historic buildings. The windows are an important part of the fabric of a building. Sometimes, the owners must spend a good deal of money to clean and restore them. Whether it's the money spent or the vibrant color that emerges from the restoration, the stained glass becomes a focus point of the building. This leaves everyone asking: Who made these windows?

    'Churches in Cumbria'
In Cumbria, there is no local tradition in Church architecture. For one thing, the dales were mostly too poor, and for another, the slate was not a good material for building in the style of medieval gothic. Partly because of poverty, churches fell into disrepair, and had to be rebuilt, or were too small and had to be enlarged. While many dale churches have 12th or 13th Century origins, only a few remain in anything like their original state. Many churches have towers, some of them fortified, but few have steeples. Those that do are mainly 19th Century in the towns - Ambleside, Cockermouth, Keswick, Barrow and Millom. Some Victorian churches were built by rich landowners who wanted their own church near to the house for the use of themselves and their staff.
