John Frederick Kensett American, 1816-1875 Kensett is usually lumped together with the Hudson River School of the mid-nineteenth century. But his approach, and bold design-like compositions, are really radically progressive when compared to the more classical quality which marks much of the Hudson River School works. My favorite is "Eaton's Neck, Long Island" (below). I particularly like Kensett's willingness to include "negative space" in many of his greatest works, particularly later in his career. Casilear himself became an important bearer of influence, if only for the fact of his later pictures and his personal influence on [John Frederick] Kensett. For several years Casilear stuck to engraving and exhibited his vignettes at the Academy, but in 1836 he exhibited two landscapes. From then on, he sought little else but release in landscape painting. In 1838 he sent his old shopmate at Maverick’s Kensett, a letter saying he was getting ready for a summer outing to the Catskills where he could say “goodbye for a season at least to my ‘graven employments.’ The fields shall be my workshop and ‘everlasting hills’ and the leafy denizens my only study. With what real pleasure . . . do we dwell on the future, especially when it is arched by the bow of providence and presents a picture wrought . . . by the fancy fingers of imagination.” In 1840 Casilear, who previously had tried unsuccessfully to get Kensett a place in Durand’s shop, talked the very willing Kensett into joining himself, Durand, and Thomas Rossiter on a trip to Europe. Leaving Kensett and Rossiter behind in England, Casilear and Durand went on with the grand tour, combining landscape painting in Switzerland and Italy with copying after the Old Masters in major galleries of France and Italy.

Exercise on the Hudson River School of Painters Background: The Hudson River School was a prominent school of American landscape artists, during the mid-19th century. Many of the artists whose works belong to this school began life as engravers or technical craftspeople. Prior to the Civil War, their works sold very well and one might assume that this reflected an interest, at least with respect to the wealthy, towards the natural, untouched environment. Towards the latter part of the century, with the ascendency of impressionism, artists came to value technique more and the general public and critics found fault with the realism of landscape painting and the school went into decline. Recently, art critics, such as Barbara Novak, have begun to re-interpret and analyze in a different manner the Hudson River school and the paintings have gained a new following.
