As all Klee's exhibitions this one also will occur geographically far away from the places where he exerted his influence. This already is a tradition in the exhibitions of his works. However, in the case of the XXIII Bienal Internacional de São Paulo we face a completely different situation.
Unlike Europe and North America and increasingly in Japan, where a greater number of exhibitions attest the great popularity of Klee's work, in South America his exhibitions are not frequent.
Forty years ago one of the most important of them was presented in the same place, that is to say in the II Bienal Internacional de São Paulo (November 1953 to February 1954). On this occasion more than fifty works covered all of Klee's artistic journey. In that one as well as in the current exhibition the works exhibited belonged to the two great collections of Klee's works: the Foundation Paul Klee, that is a part of the Art Museum of Bern, and the collection of the Klee family.
The choice of the works that would be shown in the XXIII Bienal Internacional de São Paulo also cover the period that goes from 1899 to 1940. A segment of the works aims to clarify the artistic journey of the artist. Until 1910, Klee was searching for a personal style in his work. The friendship with Alfred Kubin started in this period - Kubin started to follow up Klee's work with great interest and bought his first drawing -, was the leading factor for an increasingly close relationship between Klee and the European avant-garde artist. During his first fifteen years of activity Klee dedicated himself almost exclusively to drawing. In the illustrations that he prepared in 1911 and 1912 for the Voltaire's novel Candide ou L'Optimisme, the artist was able to reach a modernist conception of drawing. It is only after 1914 that drawing loses its prevailing role in Klee's work.

Biography
Provenance Exhibitions Literature ... Large Image Paul Klee's Die Paukenorgel , painted during the artist's last year at the Bauhaus in Dessau, shows the influence of French Cubism, Bauhaus Constructivism, and the work of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) and Lyonel Feininger in its monochromatic composition of crystallized forms. The title and details place the largely abstract work in a musical context, and bear witness to the fact that Klee was as proficient and knowledgeable in music as he was in art.
Klee painted Die Paukenorgel in 1930, his last year at the Bauhaus in Dessau. In contrast with his earlier intuitive approach to artistic creation, at this time he was conducting planimetric and stereometric experiments into the geometric origins of form. Drawing on scientific data derived from contemporary physical, mathematical, psychological, and aesthetic research, he formulated a theory of pictorial space and its formal relationships and assembled a handbook of motifs. Almost obsessively, he drew endless diagrams in which he explored the kinetic variations and rhythms of structure by projecting geometric objects in space.

Paul Klee (1879-1940)
Swiss painter, watercolorist, and etcher, who was one of the most original masters of modern art. Belonging to no specific art movement, he created works known for their fantastic dream images, wit, and imagination.
A German citizen, Klee lived much of his life in Switzerland.
He was born in Münchenbuchsee, near Bern, Switzerland, on December 18, 1879, and in 1898 moved to Munich, where he studied art at a private school and at the Munich Academy. His earliest works were pencil landscape studies that showed the influence of impressionism. Until 1912 he also produced many black-and-white etchings; the overtones of fantasy and satire in these works showed the influence of 20th-century expressionism as well as of such master printmakers as Francisco de Goya and William Blake. Klee was a teacher at the Bauhaus, Germany's most advanced art school, from 1920 to 1931.
After 1935, afflicted by a progressive skin and muscular disease, Klee adopted a broad, flat style characterized by thick, crayonlike lines and large areas of subdued color. His subject matter during this period grew increasingly brooding and gloomy, as in the nightmarish Death and Fire (1940, Kunstmuseum, Bern, Switzerland

As a boy he learned to play the violin and later married the pianist Lily Stumpf and for a time it seemed unclear whether Klee would make music or art his life. In 1931 Klee was appointed to the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Art, but was dismissed two years later, under Nazi pressure. He traveled widely and his experiences are reflected in many of his works.

Reviewed by Steve Penn PAUL KLEE at the Hayward Gallery
From the start of the exhibition ( Paul Klee: the nature of creation ) you can tell that the Hayward is proud of this one. And so they should be, as they have secured both Robert Kudielka (Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at Berlin's University of Art) and Bridget Riley (BritArt mistress) to compile the biggest exhibition of Klee's works ever seen in the UK. It would be impossible to describe the variety of paintings, watercolours and drawings on show here, but there are a lot of them, borrowed from across the globe. The Hayward provides the ideal setting for the works, as its side rooms and cubbyholes neatly split the range into Klee's own definitions. A pioneer and star of early twentieth century art, Klee produced over 10,000 separate pieces, over ninety of which are at the Hayward. These ninety are split into Klee's six types, ranging from "Square Paintings" to "Disrupted Rhythms" and from 1914 until his death in 1940. Keeping this division not only helps the viewer form a structured view of the works, it also makes plain Klee's obsession with rules each painting fits into its place and the colours on each piece conform to standards. These rules slide and move across his career, but the basic need for an order behind the abstraction is obvious. Often that order is musical, as anyone looking at the later works will see, but there is also a desire for rules in life, as in the work Der Kinderspiel (a children's game) which imposes the rules of an unknown game upon an otherwise "unrestrained" portrait. Other works show an inner need for religious order, such as

Paul Klee was perhaps the most famous person to develop scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) and die from it. Born in a suburb of Bern, Switzerland, he trained in art in Munich and became a principal in the "Blue Rider" school which included Kandinsky, whose painting gave the movement its name. The members of this school contributed integrally to the development of art as we know it today. Their ability to convey a mood with abstract figures remains impressive. Klee's position as a pioneer in modern art has increased steadily in the decades since his death in 1940, four years after the diagnosis of scleroderma was made at age 56. Klee studied, taught and practiced etching from 1898-1914, when on a trip to Tunisia with August Macke and Louis Moilliet he embraced color and temporarily became occupied with cubism. Recognition of his works increased steadily from 1908 to the present. His work was exhibited in New York in 1924, in London in 1934, and, in 1931, 252 works were exhibited at the Kunstverein in Dusseldorf in 1931; in addition, there were numerous exhibitions in Munich. Having previously interacted with Kandinsky, Macke, Marc, Kubin (the Blue Rider artists), he met Delauney, Le Fauconnier, Kahnweiler and Uhde in Paris in 1912, where he saw the work of Picasso, Braque, Matisse and Rousseau. Klee was a revered teacher and kept extensive and methodical notes on his paintings, placing importance on his titles for interpretation by his audience.

Paul Klee dabbled in many forms but there is one uniting theme - the desire to give pleasure. By Adrian Searle

Tuesday January 15, 2002 The Guardian Paul Klee, Spiralschraubenbluten II (detail) The more one sets out to order Paul Klee, to classify him, the more mysterious and various his art becomes. So prolific was the artist - he left about 10,000 drawings, watercolours and paintings, never mind the essays, teaching notes and marginalia - that a definitive exhibition of his output would be, if not impossible, then indigestible.
