Jeff Koons, artiste complet dont la création englobe toutes les techniques artistiques : l'installation, la photographie, la peinture, la sculpture sur tous matériaux (bois, marbre, verre, inox), jusqu'à la création assistée par ordinateur. Loin d'être élitiste, Jeff Koons essaie de faire de l'art pour le plus grand nombre. Koons travaille toujours avec le souci de "traiter de choses avec lesquelles tout le monde peut créer un lien". Il s'approprie des objets et essaie de "comprendre pourquoi et comment des produits de consommation peuvent être glorifiés". Tout au long de sa carrière, il a utilisé toutes sortes d'articles populaires, d'abord des aspirateurs et des ustensiles électroménagers enfermés dans des caisses de plexiglas et éclairés très cliniquement de néons, puis des ballons de basket en suspension dans des aquariums (grâce à l'aide du Dr. Richard Feynman, Prix Nobel de Physique), puis des bibelots rococo, des souvenirs de bazar (lapins gonflables, bergères ou petits cochons en sucre, Michael Jackson en porcelaine...), enfin et surtout des jouets et des objets intimement liés à l'enfance. He is one of the very few to have brought out the essential from the avant-garde movements of this century, notably Pop Art. Jeff Koons is a complete artist whose creation gathers all techniques: installation, photography, painting and sculpture throughout all materials (wood, marble, glass, stainless steel...), even computerized creation. Far from being elitist, Jeff Koons attempts to make art for a wide public. In his work, Koons always intends to "treat things with which everyone can create a link". He appropriates objects and tries to "understand why and how consumer products can be glorified". Throughout his career, he used all kinds of popular items, first vacuum-cleaners and domestic appliances boxed in Plexiglas and very clinically lit up by neons, then suspended basketballs in water tanks (with the help of Dr. Richard Feynman, Nobel Prize in Physics); then rococo bibelots, bazaar souvenirs (inflatable rabbits, shepherdesses or little pigs in sugar, Michael Jackson in porcelain...), and last but not least, toys and objects intimately related to childhood. In his hands, the most ordinary objects overcome the stage of seriality and commonness to become true icons. His Inflatable Rabbit , cast in stainless steel in 1986, is now acknowledged as an emblematic work of the end of the 20th century.

Testing the limits between popular and elite culture, his sculptural menagerie includes Plexiglas-encased Hoover vacuum cleaners, basketballs suspended in glass aquariums, and porcelain homages to Michael Jackson and the Pink Panther. In extending the lineage of Dada and Marcel Duchamp, and integrating references to Minimalism and Pop, Koons stages art as a commodity that cannot be placed within the hierarchy of conventional aesthetics. These seven large-scale paintings foreground happy-face deli sandwiches, enormous lips, spiraling roller coaster rides, and wind-swept hair all set against sublime landscapes. Working from computer-scanned reproductions taken from the media and personal photographs, Koons combines familiar yet sometimes unrelated images to create collage-like paintings rendered with photo-realist perfection. These works recall the advertising iconography and billboard-style painting technique present in James Rosenquist's paintings. Yet by comparison, Koons's work exudes a sense of excess and effervescence. Compressed into the foreground, his subjects are purposefully flat and opaque, denying any specific social critique or psychological implications. Instead, his imagery emphasizes complete and total self-gratification, celebrating adult sexual desire and allure, as well as an ever-wanting child's consumption of popular culture.

Sie sind vertraut, zumindest ist nichts völlig fremd. Doch gleichgültig wie spontan und amüsant das Wiedererkennungserlebnis ist, ob der Gegenstand aus der Ding- oder aus der Phantasiewelt stammt, so hat man ihn noch nicht gesehen. Er begegnet uns vielmehr im Bild als Bild und im Raum als Skulptur. Hintergrund Jeff Koons verblüffte die Kunstwelt, als er in seiner ersten Einzelausstellung 1980 im New Yorker New Museum of Contemporary Art mit drei geschlossenen Werkgruppen auftrat, die wie das Produktsortiment einer neu gegründeten Handelskette erschienen: "Inflatables" ('Aufblasobjekte"), "The Pre-New" und "The New". Die erste Gruppe besteht aus Blumen und Spielzeug aus aufblasbarem Gummi, auf Spiegelsockeln plaziert, die die aufgeblasene Leere der Objekte endlos vervielfachen. In "The Pre-New" präsentiert Koons Alltagsobjekte, aufmontiert auf Plastikleuchtröhren. Mit nagelneuen Reinigungsgeräten in sterilen Leuchtvitrinen in der Werkgruppe "The New" knüpft Koons an die Ready-Mades Marcel Duchamps vom Jahrhundertbeginn an. "Ich glaube", so beschreibt Koons, "gerade heute kann das Banale unsere Rettung sein. Banalität ist eines der wichtigsten, uns zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel. Sie ist eine große Verführerin, denn sie wirkt unterschwellig auf die Gefühle. Das ist ja das Entwürdigende - weil man nicht davon bedroht wird."
