Selected Works Jeff Koons Top Jeff Koons Balloon Flower Special stainless steel, 289 x 335 x 274 cm The motifs for the series of large-format sculptures and paintings called "Celebration" seem, like "Balloon Flowers", to have been taken from children's books or fairy-tales, or even from a gift catalogue. They are familiar, at least, there is nothing that is completely strange. But no matter how spontaneous and amusing the recognition experience might be, whether the object comes from the world of things or the world of the imagination, it is not something we have seen before. On the contrary, it confronts us as an image in the image and as a sculpture in the space. The Balloon Flower consists of seven elements: six large blossom- or balloon-like shapes of various sizes, and one bar that can be taken as a flower stem. They are all aglow in the radiance of a triumphant blue, so that they can see themselves and the world around them reflected. That is the truly appealing thing about the Balloon Flower: it attracts people to look at it, and then reflects them back at themselves. Background The Balloon Flower was always intended for a public place. The public has become part of Jeff Koons' work - as a medium. A new generation of artists emerged in about 1980. They proceeded, strategically and unhesitatingly, to celebrate mundaneness and mass media production as propagated two decades before by Pop Art.

Big, brash, playful and with plentiful allusions to sex and clowning, what could be more apt? The seven large new paintings on show at the Fruitmarket Gallery are multi-layered riots of brightly painted toenails, lips, plaits, doughnuts, swirling spirals and eyelashes. Called Easyfun-Ethereal, they are a pleasure to wander amongst and a relatively quiet haven from the muggy streets. Niagara: The show is a coup for Edinburgh Reading the brochure I find they are full of references to high and low culture, mixing surreal images with snatches from adverts. The first, enormous, canvas as you go in is entitled Sandwiches - a jumble of archetypal US deli-style sandwiches, complete with olive eyes and a chocolate smear moustache. They make you want to laugh out loud.

Die visuelle Sprache der Werbung und der Unterhaltungsindustrie nutzt Jeff Koons, um "mit den Massen zu kommunizieren". Mit in Plexiglas verkleideten Staubsaugern, in Aquarien schwebenden Basketbällen und mit seinen porzellangewordenen Huldigungen an Michael Jackson und Pink Panther testet er in seinen Skulpturen die Grenzen zwischen "high" und "low culture". march 2003 the world according to art jeff koons' puppy @ the rockerfeller centre, new york june 6 to september 5, 2000 jeff koons' puppy is a staggering achievement of sculptural imagination, horticultural dexterity and engineering skill. first created in 1992 for a temporary exhibition in the german city of arolson, puppy was an immediate sensation drawing huge crowds and critical acclaim. a symbol, according to koons, of "love, warmth and happiness" this contemporary masterpiece is a triumph of scale, colour and materials. rising 43 feet tall from the puppy's paws to its alert ears, the sculpture is formed from a series of stainless steel sections constructed to hold over 25 tons of soil watered by an internal irrigation system. this floral giant is composed of over seventy thousand plants, including begonias, impatiens, petunias, marigolds and lobelias. once described as 'the seventh wonder of the world', puppy was installed at the museum of contemporary art in sydney australia in 1996. once year later puppy traveled to bilbao in spain where it became a permanent part of the guggenheim museum's collection and an icon for basque city. organised by rockerfeller centre in association with the public art fund, this new york exhibition of puppy was made possible by the efforts of many dedicated riggers, horticulturists and volunteers working over a period of three weeks to install this monumental work. puppy at rockerfeller centre is the first exhibition of this public sculpure in the united states.
