Diese Arbeit wurde von Wolfdietrich Hassfurther, Galerist und Antiquar in Wien, aus der Sammlung Grohe, Schweiz erworben. Das Bild entstand 1906/1907 als Kubin unter dem Einfluß des Benediktinerpaters Willibrod Verkade in der Art moderner französischer Malerei (Gaugin-Kreis) experimentierte. Näheres dazu im Katalog von Annegret Hoberg(Hg.): Alfred Kubin 1877-1959, edition spangenberg, München 1990 S 258-272 sowie andernorts. Die Arbeiten in Tempera sind im umfangreichen Werk Kubins selten. Diese Arbeit ist von Motiv und Technik am ehesten vergleichbar mit dem Blatt "Schmuggler" im O.Ö.Landesmuseum, Inventarnummer Ha II 3238, abgebildet in Peter Assmann (Hg.) ALFRED KUBIN Austrian illustrator (1877-1959) Biography: Alfred Kubin was born on 10th April 1877 in Leitneritz, Bohemia. Having begun as apprentice at a fotograph workshop, he enrolled in Academy of Munich in 1898. In 1902 he first exhibited in Berlin and published some of his drawings. He travelled to Paris and befriended important figures like Kafka and some members of Die Blaue Reiter. At that time, he used to illustrate classic works of literature. During a state of depression in 1896-7, he attempted suicide on the tomb of his mother. In 1897 he attended Schmidt-Rottluff's course at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1901 he discovered the engravings of Klinger and, with them, his own vocation. In 1905 he visited Odilon Redon in Paris. In 1906 he acquired Zwickeldt Castle, to which he retired. In 1908, after the death of his father, he wrote a novel of the fantastic, The Other Side . He illustrated the works of Nerval, Poe, Strindberg and Wilde. He was a friend of Klee and Franz Marc and member of the New Association of Young Artists and of the Blauer Reiter. With his traumatic youth, Kubin plunged deep into the unconscious in order to transcend everyday reality. His delirious graphic production mixes the most diverse influences, which he expanded to express his infinite internal universe. The exhibition offers a monographic overall view ranging from Kubin's early works to the late oeuvre. Films and lectures accompany the presentation. The project includes a selection of presentation programmes specially conceived for children and young people. Rudolf Leopold started collecting Kubin in the sixties. The uniqueness of the formerly private Kubin collection lies in the fact that Rudolf Leopold managed to acquire the so-called "incunabula" by Alfred Kubin. In the main, these involve sheets produced in the period between 1899 and around 1912. A US K UBINS L EBEN Alfred Kubin wurde am 10. April 1877 in Leitmeritz, einer Stadt in Nordböhmen, geboren. Sein Vater, Friedrich Franz Kubin, war nach seinem Dienst als Offizier der k. u. k. Armee Obergeometer im Staatsdienst. Seine Mutter war die Pianistin Johanna Jenny geb. Kletzl, eine kunstsinnige Frau, von der Kubin wohl das Musische geerbt hat. 1882 übersiedelten die Eltern nach Zell am See. Kubin war schon als Kind nichts so verhaßt wie äußerer Zwang. Er wollte ein unbekümmertes Leben führen und stieß dabei immer wieder auf den Widerstand der Erwachsenen. Die Schulstunden wollten ihm gar nicht vergehen, der Lehrer gewann jedoch bald sein Vertrauen. Märchenbücher hatte Kubin am liebsten. Mit fünf Jahren begann er mit Stiften und Farben ungezählte Blätter zu bezeichnen. Er hatte immer einen Hang zur Übertreibung und zu Phantastereien: eine Kuh mit vier Hörnern war ihm viel lieber als die mit zwei. Dementsprechend waren auch seine Kinderzeichnungen beschaffen. Sie wimmelten von Zauberern, schrecklichem Viezeug, kurz der ganze spätere Kubin war schon im Keime darin enthalten. Zehn jahre war Kubin alt, als seine Mutter starb. Sie war der erste Mensch, den er sterben sah. Ihr Tod hat sich tief ins Kindesgemüt eingeprägt und beendete die Jahre seiner Kindheit. Kubin wurde nach Salzburg ans Gymnasium geschickt. In der zweiten Klasse fiel er durch und kam wieder zurück nach Zell am See. Mit vierzehn Jahren gab ihn sein Vater an die Staatsgewerbeschule nach Salzburg, um ihn für das Baufach ausbilden zu lassen.
